Some of the proposed MPAs ban spearfishing tournaments inside them, I think if kayak-fishing tournaments were less of a new thing we'd probably be banned as well.  I'm not sure but it seems that someone participating in the spearfishing pool might also be banned from spearing in these reserves (though it'd be hard to prove on the spot, if someone wins the pot with a fish speared from such a zone a greenie might cal caltip on them).  We might want to keep a low profile on tournaments so as to not draw negative rules such as these upon ourselves.

Yep.  Here is what it says for Carmel Bay.

b. No spearfishing contests allowed: A contest is defined as: Any competition involving
two or more persons in which persons are ranked or winners are determined based on the
size, weight, number of species, type of species, or number of fish taken by means of
spearfishing.

Yeah, but spearfishing tournaments get singled out because they do it from kayaks and launch/land at beaches where non-fisherfolk can see them.  That's gained them the perception of being particularly wastefull in some way.  The elk tourney caused some debate up there, and had that been in monterey where folk are of a different type, kayakfishing (or all competitive fishing) tournaments would be included.
