Do opaleye count towards the perch category in AOTY?

I wouldnt think so because they are not part of the perch family. According to the DFG site they are a nibbler. The only one of that specie. I never heard of them but they do seem to grow quite large. Pat , did you catch one?

Ya that's kinda what I thought. Thanks Craig. There's some jombo opaleye that cruise the CG jetty. I don't think anybody's ever targeted them from the yak but it c/b fun...ultralite w/peas or moss.

What about freshwater yellow perch--do those count towards panfish, anybody know?

Did a little research and found out sounds like only 2 lakes.

Might head up to iron gate next weekend they are my favorite maybe wait until and see how much the flow increases first.

Yes yellow perch count for AOTY. Direct from the rules.....

9. Panfish are defined as the following common names (freshwater sunfish, crappie, yellow perch).

Unless you are an AHull of course. Then they don't count.  :pottytrain2:   :smt003

D'OH! Shoulda read the fine print! Thanks Jim.
Bridgeport Res has lunker trout and some yellow perch. Seems like a worthy destination for AOTY.    Maybe next year...

If someone could find  some walleyes that would get you some great AOTY pts! Those things grow to three feet! And are considered perch.

Are you sure?  They might be related to the Perch family but are not Perch!

if i was to go after a big panfish i'd probably run up to crowley and go after some of those sacramento perch.  i went up last year but the wind was blowin' 30 so i never got on the water.

The article says 8-10 inch and some 12. That's not real a real healthy size for AOTY. If they were in the 15-17" range that might be better.

There is a surf perch called walleye.  They are perch.  They do not grow to 3 feet.  They should qualify for AOTY

I kinda wish there was a lake w/walleye around here.

Sac perch are caught pretty frequently at Bridgeport & Crowley. According to this study, they can grow to 24" and 6+lbs. Biggest I've seen was only like 18" though. I think the CA record is like 3lbs 10ozs.
