Hello all!

I am an Oakland native who has been an avid fisherman all my life. However, recently I have become tired of being shorebound all the time and long to own a kayak of my own. I am definitely interested in buying one but it would be nice to be able to go out with people to show me the ropes first so I can get the hang of it.

I am really interested in learning to catch halibut the bay before making the move out to the ocean eventually for rockfish/lingcod.

Anyway if there are any experienced people out there that wouldn't be opposed to me tagging along sometime in the bay for halibut let me know! I am a teacher so I have summers off and plenty of time on my hands  :D

also if anyone is selling a great starter kayak at a reasonable price lemme know!

-Cole

Welcome on board Cole. I just put on a halibut fish and learn this last weekend for people getting into kayak fishing. We were mainly targeting halibut and safety. Sorry we missed you.

I believe cck is also having a halibut seminar sometime at the end if this month. Maybe that is something to look into.

You can always Google "the lost anchovy halibut fishing tutorial" and my tutorial should get you started with fishing for the flat fish. Good luck and be safe out there.  --Tla  :smt001

Taking a one or two day intro to kayaking class will cover the basics of technique, gear, and safety. CCK, or any decent kayak shop should have one that works for you. Consider it an investment in your life and kayaking happiness.

I learned in SIT kayaks, but there are now SOT classes that would be more applicable (since I will assume that is the kayak type you'll be interested in for fishing locally)

Thanks, everyone for the pointers!

Anchovy, I already follow your videos and blog so I have seen your tutorial :)! You are the halibut master.

I really want to get out on Tomales Bay when the Halibut are running!

Gonna head down to cck today after work to see what they say.

Welcome, Cole!

You might check out your local kayak rental place to see if they sell theirs. I got a BRAND NEW (tag still on it) Cobra Navigator from our local shop (only $350) and put another $150 into accessories. Works like a charm as a spearfishing yak now. Just an idea :)

What school are ya at, Twid? I teach 10th and 11th grade World and US history!

Just purchased my first Kayak, a Vibe Skipjack 90. Looks great and had a bunch of awesome reviews :) excited to get out and start paddling around on it.
