Wow!
This is a picture of a great white shark playing around in the surf at Garrapata beach (not Soberanes Pt but slightly further south---the stretch of beach near Garrapata Creek). This is the north side of the beach. Exactly where Mahito and I tried to surf launch a month ago.
Thats kinda scary....actually, thats really scary! Popular surf spot too.

You must be kidding me.  I was just there last night, 11/30/06 at 5pm to scout the area.  Judging from the height of the waves and the distance of the camera, that's a VERY BIG fin to stick out like that.

Thanks for sharing the pic.  Now, I have to think 3 times before launching there.

Bart Keagy took it in Fall 2004. I thought it was a recent photo until about 2 minutes ago...D'OH!

Still very scary!

Scouting for a surf spot, Ron? Or a fishing spot? Just curious....

Looks like a bad time and place to dump a surf launch or landing.

Any time in the last two decades, let alone 2004, is recent enough for me!  Those are the sort of images you expect from South Africa or north of Davenport............not down here............ :smt091

"fishing spot", PK.  I've been told of great fishing story there but the 'landlord' story was leftout until I saw this posting.  Now I know why it's fishy there.

I don't know why you guys think big sur is safe. there are at least two attacks recorded at pt sur itself.

There is no safe spot, just ones the landlord collects rent from less frequently.

x2 , i think the safest spot you can be is at home on the couch facing up looking at the cieling. even that can become unsafe if you fall asleep and someone goes about putting your hand in warm water.

no place is "safe" if you think about it. experienced people take to the seas and some of them die each year.

i think the more remote the place is the higher the risk of something happening and nobody finding out about it.

The way I see it is that you are far likely to die by living the daily grind of life than being eaten by a shark. Even if you dive/surf/kayak everyday, you are still more likely to die by driving your car. If you have to die anyway and eventually, it would make more sense to die in the pursuit of your passion than withering away slowly in a hospital bed! Live life to the fullest while you can and don't worry too much about the dangers that may or may not materialize, you never know which day will be the end. Heck, an asteroid could hit the earth anytime and wipe us all out like dinasaurs tomrrow!

yup, that is also how i feel. the day i cant wipe my own rear i will be ready to go out of this world.

speaking of scary day to day stuff, i drive down 101 towards san jose each morning and someone failed to paint lines near the 85/101 intersection. almost each day i get nervous when i am about to get in that area.

you just never know.

True....but because the White Sharks are protected - the population will surely grow and grow and you will hear more about attacks....there are more surfers, divers and kayakers entering the big blue these days, it's just a matter of time.......epecially if your a kayak fisherman who leaves his stringer dangling in the water right next to the kayak - IMO - a very bad idea, especially when fishing places like Davenport and Bean Hollow :smt011

...just my 2 cents.

(by the way, I'm not saying "kill all the GW sharks now", just be more aware and don't ignore the fact that land lord may just be swimming underneath you and he just happens to be "not hungry" at the moment  :smt002) I just wish we all had "spider senses"   :headbang:
