I think I've found my method.

Gonna find a 3/8" thick or so HDPE sheet, cut and heat shape it to fit, and then melt it directly to the hull.  Probably will just use a plastic cutting board - most of those are HDPE.  Will bevel the edges beforehand so they aren't sharp.  That should give me plenty of insurance against the abrasion from loading and launching.  Think of it like a super patch.

I will post pics of the process and finished product.
