To bad i didn't take a pic with it on a hawg trough. No ATOY pts. I caught on my bass setup. Fenwick hmx rod med/heavy action. Shimano Curado bantem real ( over 10 year old setup) and 20lb mono. I used a standard two hook rockcod rig with a 5oz sinker. One full squid on each hook, he took the bottom one. I felt the hit and set the hook and immediately thought I was snagged. I peddled around a bit to try and free it, that's when I felt the head shake. First thing I thought was " don't fuck this up". My drag was set right and I just slowly worked it to the surface. That's when I shat myself! I slowly pulled him to the yak and grabbed the net. I get him half way in and lift. That's when my promar net almost folds in half!! It actually helped get him in all the way and with a tug he was in the yak!! I grabbed my "be good stick" and took it to em!!! Then screamed like a little girl. I still can't believe it, and will never forget it.

Unfortunately I dunked my waterproof camera into Putah Creek the other day so no OTW pics from me for this report!  This was my first time fishing Fort Ross so I was a little bit unsure of where to go.  I ended up arriving late to the show as I just couldn't seem to get out of work on time.  I got there at 9PM and found Joe to get signed up and my wristband.  Met Ghostfish and Mario and chatted for a bit.  This was fortunate since I remembered I had forgotten my Dramamine (they had some), and they didn't bring any squid (I had extra).  Perfect exchange!  After hanging out at Sledge's for a bit, 11:30 PM rolled around fast enough and I crashed out in the back up my truck with a 5:30 AM alarm set.

Woke up earlier than the alarm and decided to to just beat feat to Fort Ross.  Got there WAY frickin early parked near the gate and crashed out in the #1 spot.  Woke up to a line of 10+ cars behind me and two line jumpers  :smt012  :smt044

Parks personnel rolled in at a cool 7:15 or so, grrr, and the conga line to the dirt lot began.  Loaded up the yak, drove back up, then hoofed it back down.  It wasn't too bad, just time consuming!  I started out without really any aim or focus and tried a quick drift across the mouth of the main cove a few times to no avail.  The wind was blowing a bit, but the current was ripping towards the NE so it was hard to hold any type of position.  Man I was glad I was in a Hobie!!!   :smt003  Too boot, the water was used motor oil black with no joke 1"-2" visibility.  I mean the blacked nastiest I have seen the ocean in a long time.

Due to conditions, I threw a swimbait for a bit but gave up and switched over to shrimp flies with squid tips.  I was skunked for probably the first 2 hours and radio chatter indicated it was going to be a rough day for sure.  I decided to head south and try the obvious wash rocks since many others were that way as well.  I drifted the ocean side rocks a few times (red X) and then gave up and headed shallow for the kelp since I had promised my wife and kids a Sunday Fish BBQ and I was fishless!  DOH!!!   :smt010

I started a shallow drift in 30-40' of water and felt a bite promptly gone stiff.  Obviously I was wrapped on a kelp stalk but was hoping the fish would stay on.  It did and I put my 1st gopher in the boat.  About this time I heard hooping and hollering which was 49'erfan landing his pig.  No joke, right where the X is on my map below.  DOH!  Just goes to show a lot of the time it is the right place at the right time!

I continued to work the kelp line in 30-50' and started scraping up gophers every 30 mins or so.  A lot of work for gophers but I needed fish to put food on the table!  Given conditions and how hard everyone was working to stay in position, I wasn't surprised to hear a radio check after 11AM.  A lot of people started heading in, but I was resolved to keep working towards a limit.  I kept drifting and about Noon started getting a few blacks, which I was happy about!  Allowed the drift to take me over to the left circle (North area) straight out from the ridge separating the two coves towards the North shore of the North cove.  I managed to pick up a nice China, my first one, and then Gophers.

I kept redoing the drift and was closing in on my limit but I looked around and noticed I was the only yak out!  :smt006  I am all about being safe and despite being one fish shy, common sense got the better of me and I paddled in.  Hightide (I think?? Sorry if I got it wrong!!) helped me get my Wheelz on and my initial thought was to just pull my whole rig all the way up the hill but based upon an offer to get a ride to the top from SCTrace, (Thanks!!) I was given a free ride back to my truck then drove down and got the yak.

I snapped a few pics of the catch and the cove from the top of the wall.  Not the greatest of shots, but its all I got!  I didn't get to stay too long at the after party since I still had a long drive back to Vacaville for my sons game today.  Next time I'll be sure to reserve both days so I can party it up and fish 2 days!!  Thanks Bloodbath for putting this together!  Was a blast!

RBC2 was the bomb!! Congrats to 9erfan for the big win with the big ling!!! There were some nice fish caught, although few and far between. The weather was tough, windy with a huge drift. I think 6 or 7 ounces would have been nice, too bad I only had 4!!! :smt005 The food was outstanding! Crazy good hot pot, BEST fish tacos I ever had  :smt007 (THanks Jack for the winning fry and to all who helped prep and serve), fresh steelhead  :smt007, smoked salmon  :smt007, short ribs, oysters,  :smt103  :smt082   :light  :drool2 All in all a great time!!

Congrats to all who placed.

Still cleaning my stuff, but just wanted to say extra special thanks to Joe for setting this whole thing up, Allan for being the man and letting us do some off the wall s**t on his property, and super thanks to Ernest for taking a lot of his time Friday night to serve the whole damn camp hot pot, Kayak Jack & Chadrock for taking a lot of their time on game day to serve up the fish tacos, and Johnny Bones Jones for hooking up the oysters both nights.

Also wanted to say (not to spoil the vibe or anything) please, let's all do a better job of cleaning up after ourselves if there is a next time.  :smt011

Kool Stuff and Congrats to the winners, which looked like everyone!!!

Strong work Joe, (wish I could have met ya and said hi...) Kayakjack and chadrock for rocking the Man Kitchen and everyone else that made RBC2 a Kool Gig...
My original plan was to come in Friday morning, but...

the Family expressed interest in hitting the big blue....  well, I could win the tournament and have the Biggest stringer of my life...

and it would not even come close to seeing my family hook up for the first time on the Big Blue..

and with the FAC conditions forcasted....  :smt007  it's a Lock!!!

I knew getting there Saturday morning from the eastbay was going to put me out of tournament considerations, and if I even got my line in the water at all, it would be a miracle... so the plan changed to just getting the Fam out OTW and hopefully full stringers to last the winter for fish tacos...

The Fam was Great, motivated...4:30 wake up call and @ Ocean Cove a little before 9... I had not been to ocean cove before... about a 200 yd steep dirt ramp, back down only and only 10 min... launch... I had 4 hobies to rig....  :smt009

we get on the water and I am already exhausted... and now the real heads up is on with the Family OTW, in the Big Blue and these conditions... well....  SUCK!!!  red tide, fast drift..  I can tell my wife is a bit uneasy... we get to the mouth of the cove, and I'm thinking... a few minutes and we'll take it back in...

Kuba goes for his first drop.. HOOK UP!!!  nice Black...  wife is still just getting her sea legs...  kids are doing well, I'm busier than a centipede at a toe counting contest.. head on a swivel and ready for anything.. snags, get a fish , retie..

wife is fishing????  :smt004 cool... Hooks Up!!! small Back but that is all it took...

The Madness is on...  she is all over it, I'm blown away...  Kuba goes for a net job of Mommy's fish and goes over!!!

Oh shit!!!  before I can even start to help get him back in.

 He self-rescued like a Pro....   :smt103

worth the price of admission right there to see that... wish I was taking pics on that one...  so Kuba's wet, mixed swell/wind are getting Nasty...

" OK.. That's it, were going in..."   :smt102 :smt101  :smt104

Their looking at me like I've lost my mind... they want to still fish!!!

I'm Blown away... My wife is bitten by the Madness!!!  I've been doing this for over 6 years... and here we are, and that's great, but these conditions are not good...

I convince them to come close into the cove and we find some calmer water, but the drift was still fast... I had extra clothes for Kuba and we continue the quest...  I think we were out there for over a hour and called it... then deal with the launch from hell with boats wanting to come in and me dealing with 4 hobies...  got it done and got up top with almost getting stuck on the ramp...  pack it up and just so proud of my family taking on those conditions and handling the Big Blue like old salts...  They really had fun and can't wait to get back put there...

I do not have the heart to tell them Rockfish season is just about done....  :smt010

Get to the RBC and Oh My...  it's been way to long since I have seen some of those faces...  Great scene, people and food...  Just got to love NCKA...

Really wish I could have stayed longer, but it was along day for the Fam and me... Glad I got to say Hi to a few and look forward to being present and attending more events in the future...

and Look out at the future events...

  " The Danglin Clan..."

is going to be a force to be reckoned with   :smt066 :fishing1 :smt117  :grommit: :smt035

Our small stringer was set to the Best Fish Tacos we ever had tonight and looking forward to more soon...

they were so Happy with themselves and so am I...

This is such a Kool way of life...

 See ya all soon.... :smt006

In a word... SuperBadAss!!!  Joe, Lorenzo, and the rest of their crew throw one hell of a shindig.  I'm glad things fell into place and I was able to make the time to go.

As usual I rolled up with Art, who decided that he wanted to test out his new "Crawler".

The tires on that baby are meant for nothing less than crawling.

I knew I'd be too lazy to put up the tent so I drove up in my own truck instead.

Art's truck has about a 3 gallon tank and his 4 Cyl. engine is getting about 19 MPG so we stopped for gas twice before we even got to smell salt in the air.

The plan was to drop by the Hog Island Oyster Company to grab some oysters for the pot luck.  The place was busy, all of the picnic tables were already reserved.  Seems like a cool place to kick it.

Of course Art gets a little bit pissed that he had to wait in line.  He figures if he's dropping some serious coin there for 50 oysters they should roll out the red carpet...

With him being the oyster connesseur that he is he had to taste the product before dropping the coin.

He explains the importance of letting the oyster sit at the back of your throat so that you can get a real sense of the characterists of the flavor.  He claims he can tell the oysters lineage by simply examining the shell and sampling the meat.

He also suggests pairing oysters with a little sumpin' sumpin' ale... I agree with him on this.

After paying for the oysters we immediately move the party to my truck, in the parking lot, and commence to taste a few more oysters to be sure that they are all of high quality...they are.  Once on the road we were really worried about the oysters going bad so every five miles or so we would stop for another test.

On the way up to the barn we came across the bike race...

The fact that the racers were impeding Art's ability to arrive at the Barn with a fresh batch of oysters really sent him over the top and he started to yell obscenities at them.  Which in turn led to an unpleasant conversation...

Finally, we arrived at the barn where most people were returning from their day of fishing.

We made our rounds saying hello to everyone and meeting people we hadn't met before.

Mooch being the rockstar that he is was napping so that he'd have the energy to party late into the early evening.

A little later the food was being cooked and the awards were being given. Here's a picture of the group.

As the sun went down the party really got started

After a while it started to sprinkle a bit and I decided to head off and get some sleep.

Imagine my surprise when I woke up and seen this...

Sledge made Mooch a breakfast drink (Vodka with Agave sugar)

A little later the grills were fired up and breakfast was being sliced, diced, and grilled, that was some really good stuff.

Barbie had a special place in the kitchen

A little while later Art and I said our good bye's and headed up towards Stillwater Cove to look around.  After checking out Stillwater Cove we decided to turn back and head on home.  I made the U turn first and took off but didn't see Art behind me so I pulled over and waited for a few minutes.  Still nothing so I turned back around to find out where he was.  Turns out the "Crawler" had gotten stuck in about 3 inches of dirt, Art was grinding gears, trying to get some forward momentum but the crawler wasn't getting anywhere.  Finally after the tranny had just about given up and the knobbies on his wheels had just about melted off he made it out of the dirt.  He was so proud of himself. Of course he had to stop and pour some of the gas from his gas container into the tank because he burned 2 of the 3 gallons trying to get out of that powder pit.

Thanks for the fun time Joe, Lorenzo, and crew.  It was good to see everyone there having such a good time.  Especially Sledge, he really is a Sledgend.

Here are some random pics I took.  The blurry one's are supposed to be that way...

First a HUGE Thanks to all my NCKA Brothers and Sisters for another slice of Heaven! Y'all rock it like nobody's business!

So I am looking for my HENDERSON WETSUIT, was rinsing it with the hose by the fish cleaning sink on the picnic table when I was talking to Tiny. Anybody seen it, have it? It's black with blue stripes and say's "Henderson" down the legs. I'm 6'2 so it's LONG!

Please holler at me 415-328-9453 if you have it or know who does. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL!

We're On A Boat! - Team Something rides again! (One day they'll say "Those guys are really something!"

See you all soon, can't wait! PEACE!

wow!!  i have hung with some pretty fun crowds before but the ncka crew is the best. Ernest(lucky 13), your hot-pot spread blew my mind. That broth was spectacular. I must have more. I would love to get my chubby little hands on some of that spice mix you used.  Joe, you did a great job putting this event together. Many thanks to chadrock,Solsrfr1,baitnbeer,chuwy4, for helping out in the fishtacoshack. Thank you to Ravensblack for the pico de gallo and mole sauces. Thanks to Jonesz for cleaning and seasoning my big pan. That was better than a foot rub.  Congrats to 9erfan on the victory. He went home with a new kayak and several hundred dollars in cash.

This was my first NCKA event and my first time on the salt for a looooong time.  Conditions beat the hell out of me. It was the first time I came home sore from a half-day of yak fishing in a while.  I had a great time, even without a wink of sleep the night before.   :smt004

Thanks to Joe, Lorenzo, and everybody else who contributed.  I will surely be  back if there is a RBC3 next year.  It was great meeting everyone I was able to chat with out there.  The food was great also.  I'll be sure to test my party skills and stay for the night next time.   :smt003

Thanks again and congrats to 9erfan on pulling out the victory in tough conditions out there.  (too bad my raiders couldn't do the same.) That ling almost has me motivated to get back on the ocean real soon.   :smt007

Had a great time, thanks again Joe!

I managed one 19" cabbie and a 16" greenling, thought for sure I could pull a ling up, but nothing else after that.

Most brutal day of paddling I ever encountered, I stayed out until 1:15 and was worked.

Title: Re: RBC2
Post by: Rock Hopper on October 03, 2011, 10:45:17 AM
It was definitely a "Paddle for 15 minutes for a 3 minute drift" type day. I couldn't even keep a 7oz knock-off jig down and ended up breaking off more rigs on Saturday than I've lost in the last two years. All I landed was a 15" blue RF and a little snake-ling.

It was cool seeing 9erFan hook up right by me. I think him, Mike, and I all thought it was a snag at first. It was also good to see Andy make his drive from Bakersfield worth it. Thanks for the great price on the leadheads, bro, and I hope your drive home was safe and uneventful.

It's always great chillin' with the crew, and I think a lot of us wish there was an NCKA hook-up at least once a month!

Pics to follow...

I think angle's pic summed it up.....we had no volunteers to huck themselves into the fire this year so redbarn allen took it upon himself to liven things up a bit by riding his honda cr80 right through the barn doors then down the staircase and around the fire pit....all while popping wheelies and wearing a box of lit fireworks that were taped to his head.

This thing gets better every year.  I feel sorry for those that miss it.

Team Something was 'On a Boat' here's a little photo montage of our outing.

Here's the rig shortly after arrival.  I only put it up to show the complete JWR is on the hull Friday night.

At 1st light we did drive out to the cliff to launch and played our theme song 'I'm on a Boat' to all of the furbags on the rocks.  Getting them down that cliff was one thing but I'm sure glad we didn't try to come home that way.

That was last November's Tule Lake mallard contributed by NovatoDave and cooked by JWR.  1st you start with a hefty sized duck.  Just split it up the back, spread it out then flatten it out (like your whole body weight on your hands flat).  Score the skin so it vents.

Cook it breast side down 1st for 7 or so minutes based on temperature until its really browned well then flip it over for 15 or 20.  Keep an eye on it but you can't really hurt the inside so cook it well.

I have never had a better time getting skunked than at the Red Barn Classic II (or the aptly retitled Red Tide Classic). Thanks to all the organizers and the NCKA family for making RBC an event to remember!

See you all at RBCIII.

+1 on that Adam and glad your wife is OK. I actually got skunked 4 times in 3 days. Molly and I got skunked by a real skunk Friday morning before I left. Washed the dog and took a shower and got skunked at Tomales with Bird Friday afternoon. Got up early on Saturday and got lost then skunked with John, Craig and the NCKA luminaries. Then Tote skunked me twice at cribbage. All that said, what a great time. I came to fish a new location and hang out with old friends and I achieved all of my goals.

Joe thanks for organizing and thanks to those who helped you like Lucky 13 and others. Sorry about the yak sinking. You are a first class guy and the sweatshirt alone was worth the trip.

49er Fan - Congratulations on a well deserved victory. Anybody who can hook a monster ling in a red tide and white caps has some serious ju ju. I got home in time to watch the entire 49ers win over the Eagles and was thinking this guy is having a great weekend. Man what a game!!!

Jack thanks for the taco shack. The tacos and salsa were the bomb. I cleaned a lot of fish until I cut my thumb on a ling tooth and Darius stepped in to finish the job. See you at Doran for crabs this winter and the next HOW event. Thanks for the tequilla also.

Tote - really good to see you and sorry Becky didn't make the  trip. Really had a good time playing cribbage even though I got my butt whooped as you predicted.  :smt044

JWR the duck was the bomb, even if you didn't shoot it.

The BBQ oysters were awesome. Don't know who the guy was, but, THANKS!!!

Angel good to see you and you are right that you have more camera skills than Art.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Dustin - you got the cutest son in Sonoma. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Ben - we are going to miss you.

Ryan and Kat - you guys launched into some gnarly stuff that guys I fished with passed on. More power to you and for the first time on the ocean, Kat did great!

No marinade?????
What spices did you use?
I have had duck in the past and never really cared for it.
This was freaking amazing so I want all the details I can get.
I am seriously going to order duck next time I see it on the menu. I only hope it can compare.
Might even break out the shotgun and get a duck hunting license this year.

I would like the recipe too if you dont mind. I blast a lot of ducks, and Cody seemed to love it. Tote, I had fun too. Let's go troll for stripers in the delta, and blast ducks and geese at the same time, it was fun doing it last year, and look to do it a lot more this year!

Just wanted to say thank to everyone especially Joe and Jedmo.  It was a tough trip. Went nearly three days without sleep, but it was worth it to get to meet everyone.  To those of you who got jig heads thanks so much.  Caught my fish on the red mega bait like jig.  I love the iron for rock fish.  The food was unreal too.  Thanks so much.

Also wanted to say (not to spoil the vibe or anything) please, let's all do a better job of cleaning up after ourselves if there is a next time.

I agree with Dustin. And this why I also suggest we all start bringing our own plate, cup and utensils so we don't have to deal with so much trash after the event. We've done it before...all it takes is a little effort.

Sorry for the late response guys, I'm back!
The second annual RBC event was definitely a success. We had 58 registered participants who all made it out on the water to test their skills. This number is double from the 27 we had last year!
Only nine anglers measured in fish, all nine anglers measured in 1 or 2 fish each which were either a Lingcod or a rockfish. No cabezon to be measured in on this day. They get to live another day :smt001

1st place:Anthony 9erfan whose catch was a 36 1/4" Lingcod, and 11 1/4" gopher, total length 47 1/2"

2nd place: Andy1976 whose catch was a 24 1/2" lingcod, and 19" vermillion, total length 43 1/2"

3rd place: Brian Wildernesshunter whose catch was a 29 1/2" lingcod, 12 1/4" blue, total length 41 3/4"

Women's division 1st place: Kat Huston whose catch was a 15" blue

I would like to thank the contributing sponsors of the event which were: Ocean Kayak for donating an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 for the grand prize. Sports Authority, Mel Cotton's Sporting Goods, and Pacificnaludiveco.

I couldn't have put this together without the permission of Alan Haug the property caretaker, thanks bro!
Taco bar! Jack you are the man! Hotpot! Ernest you are the man! Lorenzo undercover technical support, awesome!
Sledge is a marketing man/salesman, Got some bro!

Last but not least I would like to thank the wonderful community of kayak fisherman who encompass the NCKA.
I love you guys and that's why I do it, thank you for your support and living the life! Mooch! Marv!

Till next year,

bloodbath

Well we started our day at 4:30 .. but couldn't find a place to launch (lack of research on the area). Waited outside Fort Ross for about a half an hour before we decided to drive around again to find a place to launch. When we found a spot we got our kayaks and gear ready and headed out. Once we paddled to our destination I dropped the line and jigged about 3 or 4 times, I thought an under current hit my line but when I reeled in I found a fish at the end of my line. To be honest I was expecting A LOT more of a fight. Once I got the fish on the stringer I began to feel a little ill and then finally it hit  :puke: . I just about tipped the kayak with that first chum session. I was hoping I could continue fishing but was unable to. Ryan and Travis had the unfortunate responsibility of towing me back to shore. From what they say it took them two hours to get me to shore, and at one point Rescue came to see if we were okay. They were unsure since there was a lifeless body being towed in the kayak. After all of that I managed to get 1st for women's angler! SO STOKED!!

The oysters were good, too bad you missed out.  Next year for sure though.

You're one cool homie, too bad it took so long to finally meet you in person. Hopefully it won't be too long before we meet again.  I don't know if it'll happen on the water though, Art and I seem to sometimes make it to the events but not actually onto the water.

That pic of you with your pants down is funny as hell, lucky I had the camera pointed in the right direction and was able to capture the moment. Too bad you asked me not to post it.   :smt003
