Lobster is going pretty strong right now if anyone is thinking of heading south.  Got these a couple weeks ago out of Ventura.
Between me and Gopher Slayer we also had two dozen shorts.
Salmon heads for bait.

What's up all, been registered a long time, but inactive on the boards for a while, but still kayak fishing.  Been on Central coast kayak fishing for a number of years now as I live down on the central coast in Santa Maria.  Just wanted to say hello and looking forward to getting back on the forum more and coming up for some events this year, I am originally  from the Bay Area.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Cambria 5-22
« on: May 23, 2010, 12:44:34 PM »
So It's been a while since I have posted, I have a new baby girl 4 months old so I have been lurking when I can... Finally got out yesterday.  My brother came down from frisco and we had been planning to fish all week.  i like everyone else saw the reports saying how crappy the weather was going to be but we went anyway.  saw no other boats yaks or otherwise at leffingwell, launched at 6:15.  the cove was not bad, wind was ~5 knots.  water clarity was actually decent, swell was pretty big but doable.  fished out front in 30-45fow.  My brother got the skunk but i for some reason was pretty lucky, Beginners luck seeing as how I had not been on the yak for almost a year :smt003.  managed a nice red, a legal cabby and a 24.5" ling.  also  a nice 15" greenling and one tiny little 6 inch gopher who went promptly back home.  off the water by 10 all though we probably should have been off by 930.  it was getting bad as we headed in.  forunately we stayed close to the launch and made it in in short order.  Pics to follow, my brother has them on his phone, just some beach pics but better than nothin.  Glad to be back on the water and contributing.   DP

General Talk / Ipod Picture Question
« on: December 29, 2009, 07:01:43 PM »
I am hoping one of my more tech savy ncka brothers or sisters might be able to help me out.  I have a third generation Ipod nano that stores pictures.  I am trying to open those pictures with my computer and can't seem to do it.  Does anyone know if this can be done?  Please advise or feel free to ask for more info.

First off I apologize for no Pics,  I have been meaning to get a New digital but have yet to do so.

The Perchin is really picking up IMHO. I went two weeks ago and only caught a handfull of 4-6".  Yesterday was a good day. I got to the beach at 6:30 to an incoming tide. I  stopped counting fish after about a dozen and had several fish in the 10-12" range, I still haven't seen any of the 15-17 inchers but I'll take the former any day.  I was using Gulp camo and motor oil w/ red flake sand worms.  there were 30+ people out there fishing.  The guadelupe dunes are south of the pismo and oceano dunes, hopefully next time i can get some pics.  Majority were barred with a few walleye mixed in.  I'm thinkin about going to southern most end of the pismo dunes next saturday if Any one is interested. i will post in the hookups if I go.

Pj I'm Sorry I missed you guys up at LK.  Hope you had a good day.

Loaded up Last night, woke up at 0430, left the house at 0445 got to Morro bay which is 25 miles from my house, I realized I forgot my License! :smt013,  So I turned around to go home home and get It.  With the price of Gas, the new launch spot was shell beach five minutes from my house.

Launched from the Stairs in shell beach to almost no swell and a light wind.  There is a lot of kelp but it is realyy shallow 20-28 ft. Paddled out to about 50 ft, which is 1.25 miles off shore.  found some reef patches, and started hooking up.  The Crazy thing is Every fish except one, that I caught to day were browns.  Ten total seven kept.  Caught My first legal ling of the season at 25".  Wasa stoked to get on the board after several short ones.  paddled two miles north and then back.    Best I've ever done righ t close to where I live.    Only a few Pics: Acouple Browns, and the final take.

Sorry for the tardiness of this report, I just have not had time to sit down and put it together until now.

5/1 Leffingwell landing, Cambria-  OTW @6:15am to a decent swell, but hardly any wind if at all.  Not a lot of kelp out there yet but still plenty to work around.  started off slow, but it ended up being a great day.  found a nice little red triangle between thre little kelp patches where I pulled up Three nice reds in about twenty minutes, the biggest going 20" probably 4-5 lbs.  Also had 2 underlings 21" and 23",
a nice black rockfish, a fourth red towards the end, and two little gopher cod.  I also like P.J. and Littoral saw the wardens out there, on a little inflatable skiff, just out on opening day, looking at licenses and inside hatches, they were both cool.   I was off the water by noon, the wind had started to pick up and I had not had a bite or fish since about 11:00 am. Ended up kepping the four reds and the black, I Forgot my camera in the truck :smt013, so only got a shore shot but better than nothing.

5/2 John Hog Came down to my house late thurs nite, we went out of leffingwell @ the crack of 10:00 am on Fri fished for about two and a half hours w/ not so much as a bite and called it a day. Saw the same two wardens out there again.
much more windy at around noon than on thurs.  after we loaded up, we headed up to big sur, and camped at Nacimiento campground over the hill off nacimiento rd just north of Milll Creek.  Plaskett and Kirk were full.

Had a great day on the water.  Launched at 7 out SS cove with about 20 other yakkers.  we headed out around the point.  pretty big swell and the wind picked up about 9 9:30 but the fishing was great.  There were A ton of reds caught out there.  I was in 40 55 Fow the whole time.  Caught a lot of gophers, sugar bass, and blues, 1 underling and three good size reds with the biggest being 5lbs 2 oz and the other two over 4.5 lbs.  all the reds on a 3oz head with 7" swimbait. I really wanted Lings Cause Iknew a legal one could easily take the pot.  One of our Own "Cos" took the Pot of $400 with a nice toad of a ling.  I'll let him post his own story.  I'm pissed I forgot my camera so no OTW shots but Cos did get one of me so maybe he'll post it later.  Also met up with Ethan and his dad Gary.  It was good to see you guy's again, And a pleasure to fish with you.  Had a great time. Next year if any of you want to make the roady this Tournament could be so much bigger.  it was 20 to enter winner take all for heaviest fish, but the director was open to a second and third place and different judging next year if we can get more people($)  had a great time out there.  i got a couple lame cooler pics but the fish aren't too bad.   :smt002  there is a third one hiding under the other two and the latter is the biggest of three reds 20" 5 Lbs 2 Oz.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Cambria 8/12

Launched out of leffingwell @7:00 am to great conditions small swell wind almost non exsistent. and no fog.  I headed to Cambria Rock.   Water Clarity was pretty good as I could see ~ 15 ft down.  a lot of blues around Kept one to eat but at times I was moving just to get away from them also quite a few kelp bass mixed in with them. fishing was pretty good started a little slow and then really came around for me.  Caught quite a few blues, Gophers yellow and Blacks.  Had 2 Nice reds 19" 4 lb and a 20" 5 lb.  was definitely stoked on those could have called it day with just those two fish but I hadn't seen a ling all day short or otherwise, And I wanted one.  the wind was really picking up but I was tying off to the kelp so I was going to stick it out for a little longer and I'm  glad I did. I was fishing my way back in and and was getting pretty close to calling it when I was hit hard and got the Big head shake I was looking for.  Brought him up on my new setup I just bought last week (Kencor Graf ocean series 7' 10-30 lb w Okuma Convector CV30l reel.) got him up and he made couple runs back down taking line I could tell  right away by his head he was a keep, so after getting him back to the surface I ended the fight with Swipe from one of  EKunz's personalized Gaffs and brought him on board.  He was 27" but weighed in a nice 9 lbs.  I was totally stoked and called it a day.  on aside Note I am pretty sure I saw a pretty big WSB in the kelp.  was messin around with a pack of blues about 8' down when from out of the kelp this very large fish cruises out and stops about 12" from my jig. even though  I have never seen  a WSB in person out of Water   this sure looked like one to me. with its tail shape and light coloring.  could have easily have been 33-36".

Kayaks / Opinions Please: Tarpon 120
« on: July 26, 2007, 09:16:40 PM »
I 've got a Scrambler right now I have been looking for something different, and I really want a Prowler, But I saw this boat on Craig's List down In SLO.  It's a 4 year old Tarpon 120 with seat and Paddle for 450 OBO.  looks to be in good shape.  I don't really know anything about them (Tarpons/Wilderness systems) other than It seems like there are quite a few people that paddle them on this site. I would like opinions on whether people would think this is an upgrade from my Scrambler XT  or more like a lateral move?  They seem to have very similar raw dimensions and weight Capacity.  is 450 a good deal? Does anyone know what they retail for new?  Any help/opinions are appreciated.  Thanks DP

On the water at 6:50, launched out of leffingwell and worked my way north about 2 miles to southern San Simeon, caught a few gophers and a short Cabby on the way. Cabby was deep reddish maroon with some interesting markings so I snapped a pic. Very foggy most of the day.  did not see any other kayaks or Skiffs out there, too bad for them.  Once I hit the kelp beds it was on for Rockfish.  Only had one underling of 23", but the bite was wide open had over 25 fish for the day, mostly gophers and kelp bass, and a ton of blues, it was littorally every drop for about 20 minutes at one point, switched to light tackle and had a blast with all the blues and Kelp bass.  Also Had two very nice Reds 15" and 17" caught on a 1 oz leadhead with 3" berkely gulp shrimp, so was stoked on that.  took home an easy limit of 2 reds, 3 blues, 1 sugar bass, 3 gophers, and a nice Olive.  was as hot a rockfish bite as I've seen all season.  Wished I could have found a legal ling, but I'M definitely not complaining.  the wind was light all day, the fog cleared for about 45 minutes, and then came back and then cleared again.  Navigated north by gps, was clear for the way home.  off the water at 1:00 pm.  After reading Pj and Rustic andy's reports from tuesday, I was hoping the door would stay open for me till the weekend and to my delight it sure did.  Couple pics:  the neat markings of the short cabby, my two reds, and the fog in between clearing.

Launched out of leffingwell at 6:30, to decent conditions, light wind, swell was not bad at all.  Overcast, and I never saw the sun. the wind stayed about the same all day for me.  Could have stayed out longer than I did but the fishing was so darn slow. went south out of leffingwell fished in 35-55 FOW.  with little success.  Got three fish in 5 hours, A tiny yellow and Black, a decent sugar Bass, and a 25" ling.  so I was able to go home with some decent fillets.   :smt001 a couple pics:
Conditions right before heading in and the take.

Sorry for the tardiness of this Report, left right from fishing to go to an annual Camping/beer drinking event and did not get home until sunday and after unloading all my stuff I passed out.

John Hog was down for that event so I took him out for his first trip off the central coast.  we launched out of Leffingwell at about 6:30 where it was FAC.  ABout 7:15 the fog rolled in thick a brought a little 5 knot wind with it. the wind stayed about 5 maybe 7 knots for another hour and a half until it was getting progressively worse.  although at about ten the fog burned off.  we fished until about 11.  not much luck out there.  I was a little bummed I could not get J hog on any decent fish but he had a blast out there anyway as did I.  he had a couple little rockies, also hooked up with something decent but got spit pretty quick.  I had a couple small rockies a short cabby and one 15.5'' cabby that we kept along with the biggest gopher of the day for tacos.  not  alot of fish but none the less a great day out there fishin with a good bud.  we then proceeded to go camping and drinking with about fifty other friends and aquaintences. pics below: J hog on the water, our launch, my 1 legal Cabby.

Congrats to duane and everyone else who was able to enjoy the Derby.  wish I could have been there.  had to be somewhere sunday afternoon, but I was able to get for about five hours from 6-11 am.  Launched out of leffingwell swell was semi big but no wind and surprisingly clear.  went south to cambria rock was fishing in 40 50 FOW. caught and released 3 underlings, 2 short Cabbies and 3 gophers.  that was it. pretty slow.  the fog came in completely engulfed the area then burned completely off for about 45 minutes, and then came all the way back in and whited out everything.  Navigated by GPS a half mile back to the launch.  would have been pretty lost without it.  got right in to the break zone of swells before I could even faintly see land. Anyway not the derby, and nothing too big but still got to get out.  a few pics.  short lings and short cabby all released.
