So, um, Mooch, so far the only one that really looks like a "beater" is Goutless' red beast with the custom 2x4 rack (sorry Mike).  :smt002

Old school Bronco? Classic & looks to be in pretty good shape...
Joe's old topless Scout? Looks pretty clean...
Toyota Pickup with 220K miles? Find one on every corner!  :smt001

Let's see some serious jalopies - you know, rusted out floors to aid with the Flintstone braking; different color doors & hoods from the junk yard; cardboard windows; red-taped tail lights; duct tape; Bondo; primer; maybe even some custom body modification courtesy of Sawzall!

I'm sure all these vehicles have been around the block a few times,
but where are the cars that look like they've just limped home from battle :smt062 :smt068
or obviously made it through some wild days & nights of a misspent youth :headbang:
or simply survived the sixties?!! :hippy2:

Yes  :smt001 and no  :smt009.  Didn't catch anything...I'm going to post a report as soon as I upload the rest of the pics, but the short story is I got skunked.

Mooch, all in good fun - it's a good thread. Most of us wouldn't be able to get to to the water w/out our yak carriers, beaters or not! Looks like this sparked some more action on this thread - 3 more added since yesterday.

Here's mine, '89 toyota pickup with 260,000 miles.

Right on! 260K, do I hear 270...270...270?
So far we have 220K & 260K on a Toyota p/u;
There's gotta be higher-mileage ones out there.
Mine only has a mere 205K...  :smt001

Snapperhead, I'm far from an engineer, but that seems like a lot of yak to hang off the back of your truck with only one visible strap holding those puppies down.  Hope nothing goes wrong for you.

I bought a 1996 dodge 3/4 ton cummins turbo diesel in nov '95 as a special order for about $31K. It has cruise control, but everything else is manual including the transmission. It does have $1200 worth of (old) stereo in it.

no computers were involved in running this truck, excluding the cruise control,  :smt002. all analog.

Bought an alaskan hydraulically raising camper to go with it a few months later (feb 1996).  $14K

Why did I get diesel? fuel range primarily, you can go further on a tank, but also just for fun, never had one before this one.

Sold the camper in mid 2004 just before I returned to my rented out house after I took a year off and travelled mexico and the continental 48 with my family. started kayak fishing when I got back.

put a ladder rack on to carry the kayaks.

I don't think it's ever been washed. ever,  :smt005

13 years old, but "only" 130K miles.

I'm still pretty happy with it, I'd love to make it to 20 years in it.

We've got the identical car with identical mileage and identical mechanical history.  My son has inherited it and uses it for college.  It probably sees more interesting stuff now.  I once tied four yaks to the racks.

I'm sure you know this, but be careful with the ratchet tie downs as it's possible to overdo it and damage your yak.

On the positive side, nice set-up.

I'll miss my Toyota Tacoma very much but I'll have to make the best with what I've got now....so moving forward, this is how da mooch will roll from now on.....

WOW!  Now that caught me off guard.  Definitely a nice, clean ride but it's gonna take some gettin' used to as I've only known you with a Tacoma.

You can definitely pile the gear into that bad-boy with room still to sleep.  Is it any taller than your truck?  Curious as to how easy loading and unloading will be.  Does it have a tow package should you decide to get a trailer instead of car-top your yaks?

What is the MPG?

It does have a tow package already but I plan to attach a bike carrier on it instead. I'm installing the Thule artificial rain gutters on it and put 78 inch bars across. The bars will stick out a bit which will make it easier for me to load the yak sideways.

Note* it currently has 40 thousand miles on it....

Welcome to the club of muscular yet trendy MAN-VAN ownership!!

Another alternative for rack mounting are the "rails" which you can purchase and screw into the top, flat of the roof.  the racks then attach to these rails.

Fake gutters are more manly, however.

Just be sure not to overload the racks.  handbook says no more than 50 pounds up top on the fibreglass, so one trident already puts us over the reccomended limit.  On the plus side, my camper roof has not cracked, broken or flown off the car yet.

I am arranging a light trailer however, for future multi-yak excursions.  I have carried as many as 5 (I think) up top, but it was scary.  I'll see if I can find that picture.

You are gonna love this van, bud!  total highway cruiser, portable motel room, chick magnet, changing room, dining room, etc.

also, it does not go FAST off road, but remember it is a 'truck' and can take dirt roads or gravel as well or better that any sedan.  FWD helps in the dirt and snow as well.

I have owned two previous air-cooled VW vans, and probably 9 bugs or K Ghias, yes VW finally did it right, they put the engine in front, and made it an Audi V-6, haha.

One more thing, we have to buy the special steel sidewall tires, cause the unit is so tall.  Michelin stopped making them, so I found the alternate brand.  We can talk.

Way to go Mooch, it is beautiful!!!!

Allen

I like the new Moochmobile, Joel! I've often wondered what it would be like to drive a van.

I am also "in the market", as it were. Today Laura & I are picking up a 2000 Honda CRV (we're goin' Fishunter & Zeelander style).

So it looks like the "pisceanmobile" will be relegated to "hobby" status (I gotta get a new carb for it) and I'll be driving the Mazda B2500 to the beach for a while.

I'm entertaining offers on the 84 BroncoII at the top of the thread  :smt010. Otherwise I have some plans that involve camo paint and a roof chop :smt007.

Sean, I thought the top was already chopped on your Bronco?  I thought I saw seams.

Good call on the CR-V.  AdamAdamAdams was the first one I scoped out up close and they seem like a perfect all around vehicle...  4x4, good mileage and...  it's a Honda.  Congrats!  Now I see them every where I look...  One may be in my future.

Joel, cool van!  You need a spoiler on top and a bubble heart window!  Just teasin, I love vans and that is a top notch camping rig.  Enjoy!

Mooch,

It's been some time since you got your new ride - how about an in depth report on the likes and dislikes?

So far, my only complaint is that the local quick stop oil changer will charge me $100.00 just to remove the tub underneath the engine just so they can get to it - and then charge me the reg fee for the oil change itself  :smt011 Lucky for me, I happen to know a PHENOM Volkswagon tech that can do it for me for half the price :smt002 I will eventually learn how to do it myself.

Other than that, I'm very happy with it and it really compliments my lifestyle...my car camping trips will triple - especially now that I finally installed my roof racks. Pics to follow...

My rig.  I customized an EXTEND-A-TRUCK with lights and home made vinyl trailer bunks.  I load and go in less then 5 minutes.  I do a lot of quick local fishing trips and this setup allows me to get to my fishing spots fast and easy.

Colt, that's a trick Extender. Quick & easy is the way to go.

Mooch, nice lookin' Euro man-van. What year is that?
They've come a long way from the ol' '65 camper bus I drove about 20 years ago. I sold it to finance my first overseas travel:  semi-backpacking around Southeast Asia. I carried a lot of stuff in & on it, but never a kayak, so I won't post a pic here!

Old Nissan Xterra.  I had a Toyota truck before, went for ever, never did anything to it & sold it for what I paid for it.  I really wanted another Toyota & priced Trucks vs SUV's both Toyota & Nissan.  The Nissan was around 5k less.  It's been great in 100k miles I've done virtually nothing to it.  Mileage is surprisingly good, 20 hwy 16-17 city.

Believe it or not, there is enough space for a couple of people under 5'10" to sleep in the back so car camping works out pretty well.  But the most beautiful thing about it is that IT'S PAID FOR!!!!! :smt001

heres the truck loaded up.. the new yak is the blue one.  Im thinking about getting regular truck racks and putting my thule setup on that... kind of a pita getting the three boats up on top of my truck like that.   esp with the manta ray being a bit heavier than my sea kayak.   Trade off tho is that its not as long.   I have to wonder how much heavier it will be once I gear it up.

On long trips, with the house. Short trips, lose the house, just take truck. It will go anywhere I want. I'm not afraid to use it. Also, 563,000 miles on Toyota. Runs like a champ, still my daily driver. MH is a dog up hills.

Great Thread -

Love seeing how ya'll solve the tranportation issue.  I have a couple questions for some of you.

CRV Owners: Just bought a CRV (wife's car) and have the factory installed rack - those of you out there with CRV's do you like the Thule or Yakima racks (and suggestion of which one) or do you have another suggestion.

Toyota Truck Owners: I have a old old old yakima system for transporting nearly everything from bikes to cargo to snowboards.....I noticed several of you have bolted your rack/bars to the shell on your truck - any suggestions on the most secure way to do this ? I'd love to see a pic or two of the drilling and bolt/on installation if you have one.

My '91 truck is a beater in appearance but a champ for A-B and a perfect rec vehicle.

Thanks in advance!

You can buy the mounts for the shell anywhere Yakima or Thule is sold. I got mine from ebay. Yakima is called side loaders I believe. Yakima has a couple other options also.

I put a Yakima system on my Mazda p/u using the little "add-a-gutter" plates and then the standard q-towers. There's not much to the install, other than the sweating you'll do while drilling holes in your perfectly good shell. My only tips would be to space the bars as far apart as possible on your pickup shell, and when drilling be sure you have enough clearance inside the shell for the backup plates and bolts. I came very close to botching the job when I drilled one of the hole almost too close to the window frame. Measure twice, drill once!

Like the Subaru, rollin light.

Finally got the rack adapters for the 97 SAAB and used once or twice before it was side swiped (& totaled :smt009 :smt010 :smt013) parked in front of the house. SAAB was very plush and had black leather heated seats and turbo, kinda inappropriate to climb into/load boats on after a bloody rockfishing trip but, nice quite ride. Also nice and low to load.

"New" used car 05 WRX  :smt004still slightly inappropriate, no leather or heated seats, not so quite a ride but....turbo and low!

This car loves this road :smt007, also carries boats to/over the mountains very well, 20+ish MPG. Kinda hard to get gear into after loading the boat (wing thing hits the yak). Still have to figure out the saddle issue, it would be better to have the p13 upright in order to fit the other wider boat next to it like I had on the SAAB. Keeping it upright would also make it so that I would not have to dump sand, blood or worse on the car evertime I load up.

Lucky for me I am often chauffeured  around :smt015by Otter in his work truck (a T100) that is much more practical and allot easier to load, despite the height of the lumber rack.

No Porsche or less appropriate rides  :iroc:out there?

I pulled the stock racks off our 2006 CR-V (wife's car too) and use a Yakima Control Tower system when I want to haul yaks on her car.  They pop in/out in minutes so I can leave them off when not needed, cutting down on the wind drag/noise.  Works great.

On my '91 Toyota pickup (small world, huh?)  :smt003 I use Yakima Q-Towers on the front and 1A Raingutters on the back shell, mounted on the Yakima Sideloader faux raingutters.  Bought a Yakima BoatLoader too, since the truck has a 2" lift and my Hobie is a fat pig.  The installation tips Piscean gave you are spot on.

Hey Ron, don't be pissed off...  IMO any ride gets you an yak to the water is a sweet ride.  But you gotta expect to catch some crap if you roll up in cabriolet.

You should hear what we say about the "Beemer's". :smt044

I posted quite some time ago about info to do a diesel swap into a 4Runner body. Well, I finally did it. About 30K miles 1KZ-TE engine into a 300K '97 4Runner SR5, running 100% recycled veggie oil biodiesel. Low miles tranny, new brakes, all new suspension, new leathers for the seats, etc.

I get about 25mpg on the hwy. Love it!

Peter, Wicked cool!!!  I sure wish they imported the diesels here, like they do to every other country except the US.  I can't figure out why we have fewer choices in the "land of the free".  Meanwhile the Taliban are cruising around in diesel yotas and we have to build em if we want em.

Thanks Eric - I agree with you 100%. I guess GM did us no favors in the 80's when they put out a couple of unreliable, underpowered, smoky, loud diesels forever giving Americans a skewed and incorrect perception of what a diesel can really do.

I was pissed that the only vehicles available were full size trucks with 8L cummins, or VW Jettas. Hell, even the Europeans get to choose a diesel Subarau Outback, Mazda CX7, or pretty much any other platform they want. more torque, 10-20% better fuel efficiency, and lower greenhouse gas emissions...I just don't get it.

Mine certainly wasn't the cheapest way to get a diesel, but I guess it was kind of in protest.

Al and Sean - thanks guys! I get a lot of questions at the pump and even stoplights these days from other motorists.  :smt003

I had a guy in Atlanta do the swap for me. He used to work for Jarco, a company who imports engines bought at auctions in Tokyo, so he knew what to look for (and had a killer set of tools). Basically I had to buy two trucks - the platform vehicle with good bones but a worn out powerplant, and a 1/2 cut vehicle imported from Japan. The 2 vehicles + swap work cost $17.5K. But I added a few goodies to it after that...

I get fuel at http://dogpatchbiofuels.com/ (http://dogpatchbiofuels.com/) in SF.

There is a ton of DYI swap info at www.toyotadiesel.com (http://www.toyotadiesel.com) too.

And yes, it does smell like something is cooking when you're driving behind me!

But it'll also run off diesel or even kerosene, right?  Or only oil?

That's still a bargain, considering you ended up with a one of a kind vehicle that will likely outlast you!  Very nice.  Looks "right" and not cobbled together.

Sure, it will run regular diesel. It won't run straight veggie oil yet (I would need to add an additional tank with a heating system - the only modification to run straight veggie oil is to heat it up so that it attains proper viscosity). You start the engine on diesel and run it up to temp, then swap to the other tank which is SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil). Plenty of pre-built kits out there doing that and something I'm considering!

I could fill up the drive home from post fish BBQ's!

I didn't feel it was "too much". In almost every respect it is brand new or a couple years old at most. The engine has 30,000 miles on it and diesels run a helluva lot longer than gassers. If I didn't get this, I probably would have gone with a Ford Escape Hybrid which was a lot more money. All in the way you justify it I guess (and I am a justification pro!).

The great thing about this swap is that the engine is made for this model. So it is essentially factory! even the motor mounts all line up. As long as you get the original wiring harness, you're golden. Yeah, that has blown more than 1 mechanic away - they could not believe it was done after market and not factory.

Super clean rig! Very nice job and good choice of base platforms. You can get so many options for the 4runners. Did you happen to get the factory electric locker for the rear end?

My wife would kill me if I did this.

factory e-locker: check
loss of major WAF: check

I also specifically chose a '97 so that it would be smog check exempt. The new rules are for '98s and up.

...and I've got to say my wife is slowly warming to it. Now that Biodiesel is lower than regular, and all the room she has in the back seat with our 1 year old. the 3rd gen 4Runners also feel really stable and solid.

These are the Yakima 'J'-racks.  So far so good. they have about 800 miles on them.
I'm concerned with the mounting clamps that wrap around the pipe, They are plastic. Have not lost their grip yet, but dont want to chance it.
I'm looking for something out of aluminum. Or, I'm going to fab out of steel plate.

It (car) does move around a bit when passing trucks or crossing the bridges with a cross wind... not scared of it though. rode motorcycle thru lots of side winds.  You Do feel it though.
With this being the only way to transport them now... I'm happy with it.

San Antonio last week on the way to work for 3 hours OTW (skunk)

Gotta love Al!  I sold him my trailer, then I backed out at the last minute after I tried lifting my 4.7.  Then I got the exporter and then he bought it again for real.

Next week, my weekdays are full.

Here is the TMI, Thursday cover the twins so my wife can drive two hours each way to see her eye doctor.  Tuesday is the Vet out to float (power sand them flat in city folk terms) our horse's teeth.  If those were not already planned I would be there. I can't be away from work more than that unless it is raining or just rained real good in Salinas.

The following week is open good so far for Tue, Wed, Thur.

We have a Kia Sorento...I added the cross bars to the roof rack, then found these "J" styled holders to bolt-on (bought them online for $30 a pair - I totally expected them to be thin and flimsy, but they were sturdy steel, so I was happy). We use tie-downs I got from Ikea, and it works. The only prob...I'm short and need a step-stool to reach the kayaks, haha.

Can't say enough good things about Ariel and Rack Solid.
Before heading over to set up Mooch, he met me in Dublin so I could pick up my hitch and rack.
I bet he put quite a few miles on that day LOL!!!
I saw Joels aero bars and so wanted to upgrade, but didn't want to have Mooch after me with his AR ;0)
Thanks Ariel,
Best costomer service anywhere!!!

nice but you still need to buy and install a hitch to use it (I was too cheap to get one at the time, instead I saved up for a camper shell and a lumber rack...eventually)

Looks good jmox. I was going to buy a saddle for my kayak too but after speaking with some members, I was told I really did not needed it. They say it is best to just strap the yak upside down like you have it. Lest wind drag = less stopping for gas. Looking forward to your fishing report.

Do a little research though because you can find them for a LOT LESS money.  At one point in time, I believe Harbor Freight carried something like it for $40.

The problem with that design is if you go uphill the thing drags on the ground until the entire truck is on the same plane.
The design aforementioned eliminates that problem.
I made one years ago when I had a truck. Got rid of it when I sold the truck. Now that I have a truck again I'm wishing I still had it.

its only 63 pounds. I hook a 8mm nylon cord to the bow handle with a knot tied in every foot and yard it right on up then lash it down on to the Thule racks

Any advice on getting a new vehicle? I want to make sure it can accommodate two Outbacks. Friend just destroyed my car and is hiding from me. Stuck without transportation at the moment and missing work so time is a factor. Can't decide weather to get a small economical car that fits the yaks, or an SUV that will carry a lot of stuff but sucks on gas.

I was just about to buy a shuttle bus and convert it into a dive vehicle/camper, but it looks like that will have to wait now.

This looks well kept to me but 180k miles is a bit sketchy. Thoughts?

I'm going through a similar process.  I have a big 10cyl F250 (11 mpg) that I use right now to get the kayak around - obviously limited to local travel.  Need something that gets better mileage, can fit the family, yak, and gear for trips.  I'm thinking maybe a Subaru Outback or Forrester.

I was looking at that too but my initial reaction was I can't have an outback carrying and outback haha.

Before he ruined my car I thought I had it made. Harley for commute on nice days, economical car for bad day commutes, and soon a bus for long road trips to dive/fish. I can't decide weather to get a cheap commute car and bus or a decent SUV that may last a while and forget the bus.

I'm not a car person. If that Infiniti has no obvious problems is 180k miles ok or a bad idea?

Here is my system. Cheap and effective. Four tie down hooks bolted to old but very strong 1/4 fiberglass camper shell. Two 2x4's cut with sawsall to form a cradles for two yaks. Cover with pipe insulation. Wrap with duck tape. Drill through 2x4's. Make rope loops. Attach rope. Put nose of Adventure on tailgate. Reach inside drivewell and raise nose to camper shell. Lift and slide yak onto cradles from stern handle. Flip ropes over yak and cinch and tie down. Ready to roll.

I did make a skid plate out of olive barrel pvc to protect yak stern while sliding on hard rough surfaces.

DIY truck rack on my '07 Dodge...some Yakima parts to make the ride a little more comfortable...ready to roll. Spent $45 on the steel to make the rack and a couple days welding it together.  It works like a champ. Wish I got better gas mileage tho, speedy takin road trips.

Atop the bean.  Toyota Previa, 1995, with 'custom' roof racks--3" steel bar affixed to ladder racks with J-hooks.

Forgot to take the pic before removing the straps, while I wouldn't put it past me, I've yet to drive with the yaks unfastened.

They get three straps each: one to each of the J hooks (run under the ladder rack), and another each in the middle to a pair of stainless steel 8mm marine eye-bolts affixed to the roof of the van.  For longer freeway trips I'll be running an additional bow line.

Nice thing on this van is it's got a sunroof in the middle, so I can open that, and stand in the van while rigging the tie-downs.

and on the driver's side for my wife's sit in.

Harbor freight fold up trailer

What size trailer is that? It folds up? How much room does it take up folded?

I'm trying to figure out to take my yak camping. If I put the yak in the bed I have no room for camping gear. I have no room for a rack. I have a small yard. I have a Predator 13 yak. So probably a small, fold up trailer would be my best option?

Here's my truck at Christmas 2011. 2001 Dodge Dakota, V8. Under those Santa hats are lights.

The wife got a 2015 Outback, I have a 2013 Outback (  :smt009 ) so hauling the yaks and all the other crap equipment in my short bed Silverado wasn't going to work anymore.
Bought a Harbor Freight 4x8 folding trailer and built it to meet our needs (hopefully).

Do I need padding on the 2" cross bars or will the rails of the Outbacks be ok riding on the steel without it?

Looks awesome.  I'd suspect they'll be OK on the bare steel, but I'd throw some pool noodles over the steel just in case.

Use pool noodles for sure.  Better safe then sorry and it only costs a couple bucks.  I get mine at Wal-Mart.

That is some quality work, oldfart! Very nice trailer. I would second the recommendation to add pool noodle or pipe insulation for padding. It isn't necessary but it helps.

Thanks, You would probably be less impressed if you could see the welding. Definitely not my forte. Took lotsa time with the grinder and still not pretty.
I will look for something a little denser than pool noodles for the cross bars, maybe the foam floor mats and use a heat gun to form them around the bars.

Your trailer looks like what I originally planned to make before my OCD got the better of me.
I'm looking forward to seeing your rod locker design.  My trailer bounces around so much I'm concerned that the rods will slap against each other or the trailer and fracture.  I am considering sewing up some rod socks out of heavy felt to help prevent that.

Two old Outbacks, one (even older) Mercedes.  Usually I only have one and can lay it flat on the roof rack, but on occasion I have to haul both.  It gets a bit sporty in a strong cross wind but I've driven 250 miles like this when I had to.

Needs some fine tuning but 5 rods survived a trip last night, including one bumpy road...lol.  Once I get the design dialed in, I will build another for the other side of the trailer so I can DISAPPEAR with ALL of my rods if I want!!!

I currently do that now but have seen multiple cars on the road transporting kayaks with no front or back straps.
I would much rather not use the front and back straps since its f'ed the paint job on my car.
Let me know!  :smt006

When i go very local, i dont tie down the front and back, most of the time now i do, just in case the main straps fail. For the front i tie it onthe latch ring under the hood. Doesnt damage the paint. The back i used a quick loop like this:

One thing I'll do when running bow lines (only on long trips.  For all others, I run 3 roof lines on my van, two on J-cradles, and a third going to an eye-bolt on the roof) is to put some cloth gaffer's tape on the car under the lines. This works well to keep the paint from rubbing off. The tape is designed to not leave residue or pull off finish, but I also get some lint on it from my clothes before putting it on the hood for safety.

This is how I roll.  I've put a lot of miles, 196,xxx so far, on this beautiful lady.  Still love her though, she's given me plenty of shit, but she's never left me on the side of the road.  After moving to CA from GA, I started exploring (or what is now called overlanding), this was one of my first passions upon moving to CA.  The variety of terrain and endless back-roads make CA an overlander's dream.  She's pretty well rigged up: full skid plates and rock sliders, front & rear ARB air lockers, and old man emu suspension, etc etc.  She'll go most anywhere I point her.  Not that fishing came before driving, but driving this to the middle of nowhere has to be one of my favorite things to do (bonus if there's fishing at the end)!  If anyone ever wants to go 4 wheeling, let me know!

Bought the dually for the camper, got tired of the wife complaining that my gear was always getting the volvo dirty and stinky, so I put the shell that had been sitting in the back yard back on the old truck.  Today I fabbed some mounting plates drilled the shell installed a Thule rack, loaded up and went fishing. This will be my local and back roads that would thrash the camper 4x4  fishing mobile.

I'd been itching to get out more than I have been for exercise/ working on paddling technique, but it's such a PTIA to lug either this or my dolphin on top of the mini-van solo that I put together the Tuna Can Transporter.

Suzuki Swift (OK, OK, Chevy Metro, at least it's 4-banger), a couple generic door-jam bolt-on aluminum rails and a lot of straps, you know, just in case. I replaced all the hardware I could with stainless steel bolts and nylocks as the cheap steel stuff included will rust out if you even talk to it salty. The car has no tie-downs, so I sandwiched a drain hole in the spare tire compartment with two 4"x 4" pieces of 1/4" steel bar using an m8 eye bolt. For the bow, I mounted some scrap strapping with the quarter panel screws under the hood.

It only goes about 3 or 4 miles to and from MLK shoreline or Alameda from my house, and only very short distances at freeway speeds. The nose does ride high in the front due to the deck contour; I may start carrying it stern forward. Opted to keep it simple and not use cradles; the coaming rests against the rack rail to keep it from shooting forward during braking.

Surprisingly, it feels very stable for a 14' boat on an 11' car that weighs under a ton.

Still, this can't be OSHA approved.

Hobie TI on Subaru Outback. I had to upgrade the factory rack to the Yakima towers and crossbars, then slid 5" noodles over the bars and wrapped them with electrical tape. J-Racks carry the amas. I also added a trailer hitch with the Rhino Rack T-Loader to support the 18' hull. Getting it on the car pretty much requires a 2nd hand, but I can unload it by myself.

I cut and modified my Thule Goal Post, so it fit in a custom made double hitch. Now I can haul bikes and kayaks at same time. All male fittings have a 5/8" flange nut welded inside, so nothing is moving and rattling while driving; holds rock solid!!

I went with the Thule glide and set. Should be able to put two kayaks up that way, but just ordered one set for now to try. I noticed the reviews on every saddle or accessory had pluses and minuses, the glide and set included. So it can't hurt to try them out, and if I don't like them I'll try something else on the other side.

I think they're $219 on Thule site, but amazon has them for 175 and supposedly they include two straps and bow/stern lines

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I have the Glide and Sets, and I've not been happy with them.  Specifically, they are designed to carry the boats right-side-up, whereas the manufacturers recommend that the boats rest on the gunwales, not the bottoms.  To whit, I routinely found my Glide and Sets caused 12" diameter indentations in the hulls of my yaks, not good.  To make matters worse, my "Set" saddles (the sticky ones in the front) routinely collapsed under the strap tensioning load, so the nice boat hugging profile routinely got flattened into pointy bars...not good at all.

Truth-in-advertising:  My saddles are about 8-years old, so maybe Thule has figured out how to make acceptable saddles since then, but they are still really expensive.  I just added SUP board pads ($40 off Amazon) to my bars and now I strap 'em down upside-down, and this works really well.

Yea I read some similar reviews, and also read about a bunch of people that loved them. So I'll try them out, and if they don't work I have pads to lay the boats upside down, I'd just prefer not to. I'm hoping that since my boats don't sit on the truck except to/from the water I can avoid the indentations, but it's all trial and error! Thanks for the feedback!

Finally had a chance to try out the saddles with my AI hull. There's some truth to all of the reviews, the rear contact area is small enough to deform the hull, but only while the weight is on them, as soon as I unload they go away. Super easy to get the AI up and strapped down, and far more secure than my bed extender.

Also added some ski racks today to hold my rods and reels to keep them from banging around in the bed, and from tangling with each other. I love this because I can flip them upside down and not lose any kayak space up top when I want to carry more.

All in all I'm happy with it, certainly better than in the bed.

Unfortunately right now they are pretty close. My truck has been sucking the gas as of late. I need to figure out why.
The kayak rack is 95% done. Just need one more tweak.

Okay that's good news.

An update:  I've spoken w/ sales reps & their answer to my complaint about the "Set" saddles collapse problem is that I have been strapping the saddled boat DOWN to the rack bar which definitely squashes the saddles flat. The right way to do it is to strap the boat to/around the saddles; after all, the saddles are bolted to the racks, so the saddles are secure for strapping. My mistake.

New way to roll for 2021.  mocked up and it looks like itll work out.

built the truck up for overlanding.  and now i can overland with a kayak.  i made a high security tunneau cover, and added 4 crossbars along the bed rails.  i wanted a roof top tent, but also wanted to carry my kayak.  so i added rollers on the bars.  loading is a breeze now.  if i take the tent off, i can carry 2 more kayaks on top.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210329/a08631fcab105715854626835386228c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210329/e295a392bad8ae5d02288ebd99f4804c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210329/4e338ccd146ff5245a671fbe39684a2f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210329/5eac7fd7fe9b37e00acd982c9babc43f.jpg)

Bed extender for the predator and racked Hobie outback with PVC attachment using T-bolts.  Wouldn't recommend this setup for Hobies.  The tension from the straps tends to pull the hull down a bit on the outside causing the middle to bow up a bit.  It's noticable because the center hatch doesn't close as easily when the bucket is in place.  Over time, stored upside down, it corrects itself, but still, no bueno.  Normally, the bed extender only is the way I roll.

Currently roof racked. Trailer is in my near future. Besides the pain in my literal back, no room for a third yak up there and I think we got at least one more to add to the family fun.

Hah, well you sure got a lot of years out of it!  My poor 4Runner is going in next week to see what the damage is to fix a coolent leak, and maybe do the head gasket.  Might be time for me to get something else, but after all these years, still sounds as strong as ever.

Oh man, the Jah 4runner, i remember that rig!
Hopefully the repair isn't too bad Al. Blown head gaskets can be spendy, BTDT :smt009
Why i have a soft spot for rigs that have been repaired far beyond their expected life i don't know. it's like a madness...

:smt005 You know the day Mooch took that picture at Bean, the water pump went out on my drive home!

We have retired "Clickity Clack the Adventure Truck" (got the name after one of the hubcaps developed a clicking noise).  I now have a 2020 Nissan Frontier.   We also have racks on GF's 2003 Toyota Tacoma, so the yaks can get around (GF's truck at Crater Lake NP last summer coming home from Lake Tahoe).

Update:  My beast now has racks, for multi kayak adventures with room left for camping gear  :smt001

Maybe the yaks will give it some lift and improve the mileage?  :smt044

Got my baby on board, heading to the cove.

Bought my Dads 06' CRV when he got a new one. I was thinking about buying a beater truck to haul my yak but this came at the right price and I can store everything I need inside!

How do you Roll?  It’s not the roll that matters as much as the ability to use one these days.  With restrooms left in deplorable condition, or locked down, porta potty’s tipped over or just plain full, it’s not always easy to find relief before or after heading out on the water, on a long road trip or working in remote areas.  I don’t know about you but I find myself in these situations several times a week.

Out of necessity, I found a solution and this is HOW I ROLL:  I carry a 5 gallon bucket, Dunny Seat, plastic liners and a good roll or two in all my rigs.

Tips: Bring more liners than you think you’ll need, open a door on you rig and sit facing the interior of the vehicle (notice the seat will provide backside privacy), and last but not least – dispose of your waste bags as soon as you can, do not let them ferment!

I had fun writing this up hope you get a laugh out of it, but really, I have much more confidence driving 400 miles, fishing a new spot, or working in the wilderness than I did before the miniscule investment.

Roll on my friends!

Back when I started kayaking just a few years ago. I had the white Yakima Rocket Box my family used for trips for years and Omar's Yellow Outback.

Recently I've still got the Rocket Box, Painted it Black and got a couple of J hooks for the Set of Revo 13's.

Our camping/fishing trip with Subaru Outback and Hobie Oasis.
The last photo shows one with $40 of firewood from Fort Bragg Firewood (own by a fisherman).

Do you find that it's easier loading it on the truck bed rack vs car topping or pretty much the same? I'm also in a CRV and while it's not difficult top loading it, anything easier will give me more of an excuse for a truck  :smt003

i have been very happy with it! comfy to drive, and very capable. more power and torque than a v6 tacoma, better mpgs and towing too.

7500lb towing, I get 20mpg mixed towing and normal city driving.
270hp @ 310ft lb in the ranger vs 270 @ 280ft lb in the v6 tacoma

Ford also sells a tune that maintains warranty and is CA legal for 320hp and 360ft lbs.

The 10 speed tranny (same as f150) is a beast.

Can confirm. My BIL traded his 2010 Ranger with the 4.0l/auto for a 2021 with the 4cyl/10spd auto. I drove both (to Shelter and back) and the 2021 actually has better acceleration/feels more powerful. The only downside is the roof height/tailgate height. It feels like a lifted 4wd when it is a standard 2wd.
I'm old enough to learn to drive without cameras, so relying on a screen is counter intuitive to me. But you have to use it because with a cap on the truck the rear viz is terrible. BUT, the camera provides great viz once you are used to backing up with it and lets you avoid flattening little old ladies that walk behind a backing truck in a random Santa Barbara Bevmo parking lot.
 Towing package is beastly.

crazy part is the tow package is just a hitch.  Nothing else- truck can tow 7500 without an intercooler or special anything. it should be fine for a long time I hope.  I went with the bed rack so its a bit easier to see around..

for trailer brakes I use a Curt Bluetooth controller

It is tall, but tbh i like that more than the trucks that feel like cars... i came from a 1500 suburban tho, so i prefer a tall stance and like to see over traffic. a good solution to the 2wd issue is to get the 4x haha especially if you're going on boat ramps
