Boo? Glass?

I have to admit I caught the bug for Colorado cane. Picked up 3 Grangers and a Phillipson in the past 6 months.

Also wound up with a couple of fiberglass rods off of eBay as well. Two Fenwicks and a Lamiglas.

Am enjoying softer and slower rods. And it's very nice to know that the odds are that I can sell the rods for what I paid for them, possibly more.

So, anyone else using bamboo or glass?

Well, if any fly fishers have a spare $70, they may want to take a look at the Cabela's Classic Glass fly rods. Normally a c-note, now $69.95

Very soft action compared to graphite. Enough that a 10" peanut trout can be fun on a 4wt.  And since glass rods are generally tougher than graphite, these may be a good "kids" rod.

Hi Scott,

I only had one glass rod it was a old fenwick from the early 70's. I have never used bamboo, so that leaves the old graphite. I use a 5 weight loomis for peanut trout and occasional small bass and a redington for mr. stripes in a 9 weight. I would love to cast a bamboo rod just to feel them out.

guess i missed this thread earlier, i have a few bamboo rods that i break out every once in a while, took one out for smallies the other week, it was a rod built by a friend who passed of cancer last month, not the best rod in my quiver, but still has that sweet slow action, and i just needed to catch a few for my buddy out of respect, i also have an old (50's era) orvis and a few winstons, would love to get a sweetwater from the old winston rod makers who opened there own shop in montana, also just inherited an old fenwick glass rod, havent fished glass flyrod in over twenty years so, so that should be interesting, came with a classic pflueger medalist, cameron

Medalists are getting kind of collectable as well now.

I took a major hit recently on reels, when a box was lost somewhere between CO and home. I'm now filling the void with some vintage blue collar tackle, but am just not quite ready to make the leap to the reels from Alnwick.

Pay special attention to any writing on the rod, or labels on the bag/tube/box.

Do the slow rods affect your casting?  I seem to get much better distance with a fast rod.

You don't get the line speed (thus distance) that you do with graphite, but accuracy and control go up.  I can cast anywhere I've needed to on moving water with glass and bamboo. It's bank fishing on still water where I'd like more distance, but that's true with graphite rods as well.

Ironically, I've been chucking rabbit strip "worms",  and casting big ole hair poppers and 2/0 Clousers on my 8wt graphite rods since July. This is here in CA and also in WI. I've only caught a hammer handle Northern and a 12" LMB to show for all those hours. Yet, about two weeks ago, I'm using a truly petite bamboo rod to chase bluegill and wind up with a 2 lb LMB. Not bad for a size 16 Partridge and Orange on 5X with a rod built between 1946 and 1952...
