As some of you may know, I am deeply involved with the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project (MBSTP).
I've been trapping steelhead for the hatchery for many years and for the past couple years have been honored to sit on the Board of Directors.
I have not been able to extricate a complete email list of NCKA membership yet. when I do, I can send this info directly to your email adress. For now, I'm hoping an Event Announcement will generate some action and attendance.
If you have ever caught a few salmon in Monterey or Santa Cruz area, it's likely that fish was released by MBSTP. Steehead exist in the local streams and river in sufficient abundance that we can not only fish for them, but also can retain two hatchery fish as of last year (again, thanks to MBSTP).
We're working a partnership with NOAA and National Marine Fisheries Service to re-introduce and bolster the endangered silver salmon in streams and rivers below San Francisco as well. Round that out with habitat restoration efforts and the STEP educational program, and you see a powerful supportive fisheries management and restoration effort.
And we need help. All the derbies I help work with (MBK, Kayak Connection, Perch Derby) donate yearly proceeds to MBSTP. Thanks to you all who participate in that fun, and in that support.
We do need new members. $35 a year is a drop in the bucket, but every little bit helps.
Right now the annual fundraising Albacore Feed is scheduled for November 12 in Castroville. Tons of silent auction and raffle prizes, plus a great Albacore dinner! And, a bar for those of you who might chose to imbibe adult beverages.
Please try to atend this year, I'd love to show the other board members how NCKA can step up.
Also, we have plenty of volunteer activities that need support. Steelhead trapping might resume this year, definitely by next year. We have the go-ahead to resume king salmon releases in the Santa cruz hHarbor next spring (Hard-Fought). The hatchery always can use extra hands for projects and major efforts like fin-clipping and the like.

what does "no host cocktails" mean? free for all?? :smt044 sounds like a great benefit!! Thanks for the post, I will try to get the fam out for this one, great supporting cause!

"No host" means there's no host paying for your drinks. You gotta buy the yourself.

'glad to become a member and pay my dues. I am sure bringing back the salmon pen back to Santa Cruz was a hard won fight. As a frequent Santa Cruz yak-ers, as well as a jetty fisherman, I am ecstatic to hear about the news.
I'd like to encourage the rest of the NCKA folks to be a member as well. I can assure you, once those salmon are back, you can fish for them in the harbor. Not the same, but it sure is fun if you catch one (extra shiny, extra yummy). Plus, if the HMB salmon can figure out the way back to the upper river, I am thinking the SC salmon can do the same.

Thank you, Victor! And yes, a small percentage of surviving adult chinook salmon released from Santa Cruz Harbor do end up in the spawning population of Sac River system. A certain percentage will "stray."
I should be an expert, but I am not......that's why I do what I can to help the experts and keep these populations alive, viable, and hopefully on the increase.
Because the numbers of salmon to be caught in the ocean is increased by these hatchery fish, a corollary result is that more of the wild salmon make it back to spawn without being caught.
And, release mortality is around 2-5% for the fish released from the Harbor, compared somewhere around 90% for those fish released from upstream hatcheries.

Wow, 2-5% mortality rate? That's awesome! 'didn't know that. All I know is that it increases the chance of me catching a salmon, WSB, and hali at the time in the same general area!
