I found this quiz online... it's a fish id quiz for California. Some of the species aren't normally sport species and some species are from Southern California.
At some point I may post my own fish ID quiz.
Until then enjoy...

I got 10 out of 15 guess I need to study some more
-
I also got 10/15. That sucks. :smt012
Time to hit the books.
-
Less than 10, but greater than 50%. :smt013

11/15 for me, I rocked the wrasse but sadly missed both the perch... :smt011

The test changes slightly for every person who takes it. I aced it once and picked the wrong warbonnet on the second go around.

what's a rock fish?
-
12 out of 15......aided greatly by multiple choice
-
I think if I ever have the energy to write my own quiz it won't be multiple choice. Although, I could make it as a poll.... hmmm
-
bsteves,
That was fun! I didn't do very well (9/15) but I did find it educational. More! More!
-
I would be doomed without multiple choice. I have test-taking radar. but it requires multiple choice to operate at full power.
I actually got the copper rockfish wrong (the force told me to pick quillback, so much for my jedi skillz) and
kelp perch too, both pretty easy with the benefit of hindsight. but I also got some right where I must credit the
test taking force that guided me through school.
Just don't make me write an essay, or I'm sending in my 6 and 8 year olds to do my homework.
-
I almost called the copper a quillback also, but then I saw the white line running towards the tail along the lateral line.. quill backs don't have any white on the posterior half of the body. I think if it wasn't a multiple choice I would have called it a quillback, but the copper choice got me to think about it more!
I once passed an exam in high school on human anatomy that was worth college credit but I never studied for it. It was all multiple choice and zenned my way through.

I got 10 out of 15, but missed the ling cod cause the picture made it look too small.
i don't think that should count.

I once passed a few parts of the series 7 exam for stock brokers since it was multiple choice. I was supposed to be testing it for security problems but decided to see how well I could do. I just barely passed the 2 I took but I passed.
-
6 out of 15.... does that make me an idiot?

I think you just need to hit the coast more Sam!
To be fair I entertained becoming a marine biologist at one point in my life and had a ton of aquariums so I have seen a lot of fish and read a lot of fish books, not as many as the Bodega crew but a fair amount.
-
Sam,
Yeah, you need to hit the coast more. One of the nice things about rockfish fishing is the diversity of fishes you're likely to catch on a single day. I can remember days when I caught more than a dozen different species all on the same rig. If you want the guided tour, let me know and maybe we can meet up at Fort Ross or Stillwater Cove this summer. (This offer applies to anyone new to ocean kayak fishing and wants to give it a try!)

I did better than 50% (+1) thanks to multiple choice. Not living around the ocean I guess I did ok.
Great Idea for the site,

I got 14/15 missed a kelp rockfish...but the pictures where not particularly good. I couldn't enlarge them at all.

I got 13/15, not bad for a inlander.
