I was showing the Ketchikan pics to a friend the other night and showed him this pic of a very small pacific halibut.  He pointed out that this butts eye had yet to complete migrate to one side.  And indeed it looks like its eye is right on top of its head.  This fish was release after a quick photo.

Allen,

Eye migration happens as the fish transitions from the larval stage to the juvenile stage and first settles to the bottom from an otherwise planktonic exisitence.   Some flatfish species don't ever quite get that eye all the way over.  Did you happen to check the color of the blind side of that fish?  If it was dark, it might have been a greenland halibut.  From what I can tell from my identification keys is that they tend to have eyes that don't migrate as far as pacific halibut.   Just looking at that photo, it seems like the jaw seems long and the nose a bit pointy like a greenland halibut would be.  Either that, or this is just messed up Pacific halibut (the gill cover doesn't look so good either).

Hmmm ... just a funny looking halibut then.

Here's the same butt, right before I pulled it up on my lap to unhook it.  It's white on the other side.  I think the gill cover looks like that because of the way its sitting over my leg.  I didn't notice anything too unhealthy about it when I was handling it.  But then again, I didn't notice that eye until it was pointed out to me.

Allen, that one is definitely a turbot (arrow toothed flounder), which I believe is also called the greenland flounder as mentioned above. The eye is always just to the side of the spine. They're thinner, have different color, and the 'white' side is much dirtier looking. The jaw and teeth are the dead give away.

Mystery solved then ... although I don't recall seeing the razor teeth, but then again, I wasn't looking for it.  Thanks Howard.
