Since NCKA is getting bigger by the day I thought it might be a good idea to put names with faces here.
It will make it a lot easier for everyone to recognize each other.
Post a good pic of you (and significant other if desired) with your screen name and real name.
I'll start it off with a pic from Albion this year.

I know a lot of you by your kayaks/trucks too. My own yak is easy to ID by they tattoo/graffiti. Somewhere on there are the names of the 3 princes who brought surfing to the west coast in 1885, my ling & hali mojos, the Hull remembrance, and an easter island birdman in the left footwell (to remind me that anything can be taken too seriously) :smt002

Dude, that "gunga gunga lagunga" has been haunting me for days trying to remember where I'd heard it. i even knew it was Bill Murray, just not the film it came from. Then Shellback even brings the full quote to the table.
Awesome.
One of the dogs in my office is named Karl, named for Murray's character. He has a cardboard clubhouse with a "no cats" graffiti, and a bunch of stickers. Yes, there's an NCKA sticker on it.

We have a 19 year old (in college - wants to be a DFG Warden) and 17 year old (not sure what she wants to do yet, probably an English major), so we are nearing the end of our child-rearing days (which = more time for kayaking and fishing).
So....I don't have a good fishing picture yet, but in the mean-time here are a couple of myself and my husband, John:

Oh it is my friend. Jim, it was nice meeting you briefly at Stillwater. I was the dude that was coming in due to a broken rod, as everyone else was headed out. I cant wait to go back to Ambergris Caye Belize this year. I met the owner of Sundiver Resort, 75 bucks US a night but the GF wants to go back to Matachica Resort. Only because its 5 star. :smt012 I did the grand slam all from shore (bones, Permit and Tarpon) I plan on dragging the OK they have on property to the Lagoon and do some serious rippin this time. The humidity and skeeters are wicked but I wouldnt change a thing down there. Its one of the best trips Ive ever taken.

Salty, Yorty is the place we go about every weekend until Steelhead season then it's Dry Creek area in the mornings every chance I get! I've had a Wilderness Commander and a Tarpon for about 3 years now and just got the two Hobie Pro Anglers about 3 months ago. You can cover allot more water with them, but I liked them all!!!

Hey all!
I'm Dave Grigsby. Together with my wife Jessica we own and operate Kayak Connection in Santa Cruz and Moss Landing. We're super stoked to be involved in the kayak fishing community locally and personally love to get out on the water every chance we get. We're here to support the sport and serve the community - any feedback on what you'd like to see from your local kayak fishing outfitter would be great.
We just had our "Return to Our Roots" fishing derby this past weekend and we were absolutely blown away by how enthusiastic and fun-loving this community of NCKA'ers is. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon - FISH ON!

Hi Kayak Brothers,
I am new to the site and although I signed up a few months ago, I haven't used it much. My name is Michael Yamagata and I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii in the country on the North Hamakua Coast and I am 4th generation Japanese from Hawaii. I grew up swimming in the rivers and climbing mango and guava trees as a kid. Our Dad was in the 442nd and 100th Battalion Regiments in WW11. I and my brothers and sisters are lucky to be here as our Dad came home alive and many others in the 442nd and 100th never made it home. I now live in Oakland with my wife Janice and my 2 sons Gabe-23 and Jonah-33 are away right now.
Anyway, I have been kayak fishing for about 3-4 months and I originally bought my Hobie Mirage Oasis Tandem to explore the East Bay estuaries with my wife and friends. After spending time out in the ocean, I tried fishing and got totally hooked. In the beginning, I was mostly going out in West Alameda at the Encinal Boat Launch (Rock Pile) area and was catching Bat Rays and Leopard sharks. Those Bat Rays are super strong and till this day pound for pound, it's the strongest ocean creature that I have hooked up with. In the last couple of months, I have been going out in Half Moon Bay and met NCKA members Herb NG and Brutus Lo by coincidence as I was coming in and had caught a good sized Lingcod that day. Herb has been a great friend and we went out together a few months ago with Alvin (Vin) Rodrigues from Fremont outside Santa Cruz Harbor. No fish, but a heck of a lot of seals. I also met Joey Arlett Machado from Half Moon Bay and have only talked to him by phone and email and I was planning to Hook Up with Joey and some other kayakers, but couldn't make it in the end. We have tried to Hook Up, but our times haven't worked out yet. Hey Joey, we will connect sometime.
I have mostly been fishing for Rockfish and Lingcod out HMB. I tried crabbing with a collapsible Danielson-type trap, but only caught some Rock Crabs. I stopped because I don't have a fish and depth finder and I think that the Dungeness are in sandy areas? It also seems that the commercial crab boats have swept through and there is not that much crab left, unless you go way out. Has anyone had any success trapping Dungeness with a kayak lately?
The Rockfish season is almost ending and it seems that you can only catch sandabs and crab with a boat or kayak.
Is there anything else we can fish for?
I have grown to really like my Hobie Mirage Oasis as there is a lot of room in the front to put a lot of stuff and the boat is very long 14'6" and is very stable out in the open ocean when there might be big swells. It is a very heavy kayak and when I received the boat, I thought how the hell am I going to load this on my car by myself. Having a will and wanting to find a way, I can load in on my Yakima Racks w/ Hully Rollers and front saddles by myself without too much trouble. I originally had a fishing buddy, but he had a very serious injury and so I have been mostly going out by myself I just fell in love being out by myself in the open ocean, at peace and feeling awed by nature and feeling totally present and alive!!!Catching fish is only one part of the experience for me.
A good friend of mine who cuts my hair in SF told me that a kayaker was recently attacked by a Great White out in HMB and was luckily plucked out of the water by other kayakers unharmed. Has anyone heard about this story as I would like to find out what happened as I do go pretty far out in HMB?
Since kayak fishing, I have become much more aware of the ocean and tides incoming high and outgoing low and always check the tide charts before I go out on a chosen day. I have made the mistake of coming in when the outgoing low tide is peaked out and it's like going upstream in a river. I have a lot more respect for the Bay. Before I thought that it was just like a big calm lake.
I want to change my online name (msyamagata) as I did not give it much thought when I first signed up with NCKA. Since I grew up in Hawaii, I would like to change it to the DA BRUDDAH. Does anyone know how I can do that without signing up again with a different online name?
Look forward to meeting more of you as time goes by. I know that fishing after the first of the year until May or June is going to be a lot slower. I will still go out when the weather is good for kayaking, even if I don't fish. I have become addicted to being out there and feeling so alive and free!!!
I have attached some pictures of me and my sons, the one with my youngest son Gabe was taken a few years ago in Whitefish, Montana. The rest are all pretty recent.
Have a great Holiday and great New Year 2014.
Aloha,
Michael (msyamagata)-DA BRUDDAH

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the site. Started kayak fishing this year in Monterey Bay. I try to go out at least once a week.
My wife has offered to get me a fishfinder for Christmas, but we were unsure of which one to get, even after doing lots of research, found many mixed reviews. I don't mind spending some money for a good one, but don't want to break the bank.
Would like one that is easy to put up/ take down without hassle as well.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Spent seven years in the Navy as a Corpsman with the Fleet Marine Force and did a couple combat tours. Now I'm in nursing school, enjoying boat life, and looking forward to seeing you all out there. I'm on Monterey Harbor Mooring #162 near the end of the breakwater. Stop by and say hello on your way out.

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for such a great forum. I have wanted to get a kayak for many years and I finally got one. I picked up my Jackson Big Rig on Saturday from Dan at Headwaters Kayaks. What a great shop, worth the drive from the Bay Area. Unfortunately with the lack of rain I was not able to use my Yak this weekend, so my family and I did the next best thing. We did a little swimming pool Yakking. Here is a pic of my daughter with my new BIG RIG in the pool. Hoping to get out and hit some real water over the next few weeks.

Hello, My name is Adam. I am currently a guide at Monterey Bay Kayaks and I also run my own scuba diving business At The Helm Adventures (atthehelmadventures.com) where I do guided tours and specialty tours. My true passion is freediving. I like to freedive for fun off of kayaks at work as well as just for fun. But, nothing is better than freediving with a polespear in hand. I have been spearfishing for sometime now and only use a polespear, except for white sea bass. I also divemaster for a few dive shops here in town. If you haven't tried spearfishing I encourage you to get out there and try it out.

Slaughtercraft. I finally picked a handle, however pretentious as it may be, after a year of light posting under my real name Tim Ayers. Met some of you at the 2013 Albion Open but I didn't camp since I was living in Little River. Should be back again this year and at GS8 for my first time to the Cove. I need to post more often so you quit calling me a sand dab but in the meantime I'm overcompensating with pics. The last pic is a set of fish inspired porcelain jugs I made upon moving to Mendo from North Carolina in 2011.

Hi all, my name is Allan and I live in Santa Rosa. I just recently purchased a Hobie pa 14, and almost got it set up to start some serious fishing in. I've spent a few years catching steelhead in the Russian River and trout in Lake Sonoma. I also used to catch a lot of halibut in Tomales bay on a bigger boat. I'm looking forward to adding stripers in Petaluma River, to my favorites. I'm hoping to catch up with some of my fellow anglers on the local waterways. :smt006

Hi. I'm Gary. I live in the Sacramento area. I'm getting more into kayak fishing with the low water levels. I enjoy all types of fishing. Have a jet boat, pontoon, and float tube to enjoy it all.

Hi everyone. My name is Kevin and I'm a fishaholic...It's true. I call in sick at least once a month to take the yak out. I've been modding the hell out of a jackson big tuna and even (now don't scream you purists out there) added a motor to get farther and come back against the current if needed. I live in the American Canyon area and frequent the Napa River and local bays around here. I've joined this forum to find some guys to go out with from time to time and pick the scaly, lead coated brains who made it more than a hobby and have some things to teach. I've not had the best luck fishing since I've been going out and will tell you some stories as I get settled in here. I still love the water and can't wait to get back out there. In fact I'm headed out to san pablo bay today. See you around! :smt004

Hello all,
Been a "lurker" on this site for about a year now.. The wife and I decided we needed to get out of the heat and ended up spending a couple of days last weekend at Schooner's Landing in Albion. Little did we know that the place was set as a venue for NCKA. I got to meet and spend some time chatting around the fish cleaning stations and docks with other members. Solid bunch of folks! I had a great time out there!

hello
My name is Ryan lugbauer. I have been with NCKA for several years, in fact close to the beginning. unfortunately I have not been doing a lot of fishing (ocean) over the last few tears, but have been MIA for some time. The last time I was with the group was for Joel's party BBQ and memorial. My name on the water is the Walrus, and I'm sure that many of know James Brown my English bulldog that has been a mascot to myself and was well loved by the NCKA crew. Unfortunately James brown passed away several momnths back. he will always be in my heart and memories as being a very unique little guy. WE dont have our dogs for a long time, but he taught me so much about love, and i will miss him and miss him quite a bit.
-
Sorry to hear about James Brown Ryan.
I hope you get in some water therapy soon.
And for those that don't know, Ryan is a funny Mo Fo!
-
Sorry to hear about JB Ryan I loved that dog :smt010

Hi all,
My name is Brian Turner. Got started kayak fishing last year through the help of a few folks here in San Francisco having a little experience with dungies. So far a couple lingcod and rockfish, but aiming for that fat salmon before the season's over.
Psyched to see you out there.
-
My name is Stephen Boschetti. I'm from Napa. I don't have a Kayak yet, but I want to get a PA14 and become a Nor Cal Kayak Angler. Any suggestions on new or used deals welcome. This is an old pic. Regs were very different, and so was my knowledge and experience. This one would never leave the water today if it were up to me.

Hello, my name is Sergio and my family and I live in Chico, Ca. Been fishing pretty much my whole life, but new to the kayak stuff. Could'nt resist to try just another way to catch fish. Have a jet boat I use quite a bit, but wanted something I can take off on occasionally to those areas where boats arent allowed and fish grow bigger by the day. I recently bought a Predator after seeing a buddys set up, and now looking foward to spending lots more money trying to piece it all together myself from scratch. Im sure it will be months in the making but looking foward to all the information and help here on NCKA. If anyone is in my area message me. Lets go rip sum :smt006

Hey all;
Named my account after my boat, the Red October (so named because it's red and I bought it in October).
In recent years I've primarily been a kayak crabber but I do a good bit of stream, lake and ocean fishing too.
Name's Avi.
See you on the water.

Welcome, Avi. Red October is also a very good movie.

Hello, I just learned of this group at Crabfest 2015. I recently picked up an Ocean Kayak Trident 15, and a couple crab pots. What a blast! I caught a couple crabs then thought I had it figured out. Signed my waiver, showed up that morning to play crabfest. Well that plan was blown away so to speak. Still had a great time with my yak in the parking lot. Looking forward to meeting the folks associated with this group. Duck season is over seems like a good time to pick up a new hobby. My name is Rick, screen name, bodega yak guy. Greetings.

SeaCruz = old native NorCal fisheries biologist, Kevan Urquhart. Long time Zuma 2 owner for N. Coast SCUBA & ab-diving. Am on the verge of buying a O.K. Trident 15 or Ultra 4.3 for Monterey Bay fishing. There are days when it's too much trouble to launch my 22' C-Dory Angler + closer to the water is a whole different experience. Not a big selfie taker. I think I have a photo of me and a CSUMB student doing their Graduate Seminar work in Carmel River lagoon on my 2-man that I can post sometime. I got a Go Pro Hero 3 Black a year or so ago I'm still getting used to, but will try to get some shots. Been fishing NorCal for 40 years, just not off a kayak.

Hello, I'm Chad from Santa Rosa,
Pretty new to pole fishing, but been crabbing off my yak for years. Anyway I wanted to join the group to learn more and find some peeps to fish with around the Sonoma/ Mendo coast. Just got an outback and I'm pretty well set up but still have a lot to learn. I've surfed this coast for almost twenty years so I got a lot of water knowledge and have every CPR cert there is because of my job , I'd really like to go fishing with y'all sometime!, PM me if your heading out and don't mind a tag-a-long! I can hold my own, haha! Thanks for all the great info you guys put up, it really helps us newbies out!
Cheers!

Hi All,
I'm Manny from Stockton. New to kayak fishing but eager to be on the water. Great to see people's posts and messages. I have PA 14 and I've used it a few times on the Delta. Great for bass fishing! I've been to Capitola and have rented their skiffs....just waiting to bring my yak there and explore. I would love to learn how to crab from the yak. If anyone is interested or wouldn't mind a newbie tagging along, please let me know.
Good times!

Hey guys thought it was time (after a year or so :smt002) to do an introductory post. Beachpotato here. Love to get out anytime into the surf-bring my backpack "beachpotato" chair most of the time to the beach. After throwing stuff out there for a while I like to slink back in my chair, have a stogie, sip a cool one and watch the girls walk by.
When I get a bit more serious no beachpotato.
Perch, Stripers and Cod. Have yet to get my first Halibut from the beach :smt011 :smt012.
So I've been googling Kayak, crabbing Monterey bay and it doesn't look like a thing in the bay. Tough to find anything on it. Further north up the coast, or out deep in the bay I guess.
Anyway hope to add something to the site, thanks. Potato out for now.
-
Beachpotato, let's go fishin! Although I haven't heard much about the striper bite lately.
-
Great team you have, happy to join!

Hello All,
I moved to NorCal a couple of years ago, took up Ab diving last year and really enjoy it.
decided to take up SCUBA again - NAUI certified from 20 years ago. spear fishing looks like so much fun.
just picked up a used kayak and would like to try ocean fishing with it, no idea how to go about that yet.
based out of Ukiah, and get down to Fort Bragg, Caspar, and Rock port often,
would like to meet up with some experienced (and patient :-) ) like minded people,
hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Turkey day.
best,

Hi everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Sherrod and just moved to the Bay Area from Arizona...looking forward to a lot of great fishing and making some friends.
-
Regor here, real name roger. Retired living in south sac. Jackson Kilroy is my choice of kayak. Berryessa, and new melones are my favorite lakes.
-
My second day of yaking off in Bay Point, found an abandoned trawler and tied up since I did not have an anchor yet. Awesome looking at Mt. Diablo from the water, it is so impressive. Spent too much time at sea level traveling the world and appreciate the wonders of mountains.
-
Recently retired from 28+ years in law enforcement and looking forward to some epic fishing weekends in my 2016 Hobie Outback! See you all out there!

Don't have any pictures of myself.
Now that I'm retired with one kid off to college, the other stays in her room texting, I finally have time to rig my kayak for fishing.
It's a tarpon 120. I'm thinking of heading down to Sacramento to check on the salmon as soon as I get the stitches out of my mouth.

Hi All,
My name is Robert (Bob) Fairchild, screen name is simply "rffairchild" and below are a few picture of me and my wife Pam. We love camping, backpacking, and I LOVE fishing. I have kayak fished the lakes of the foothills and Sierras, but really want to get into fishing the central coast. I participated in a Hobie First Cast event on Tomales Bay in July and was hooked (pun intended). I just picked up the 2017 Hobie Outback Camo edition. Can't wait to catch fish.
I live in Patterson (central valley) and work in Berkeley. Hope to see you on the water. First trip will be Seacliff State Beach in 2 weeks.
Cheers,
Bob (Robert when I'm in trouble)

I love the salt, but also plan on chasing some Kokanee. I'm also on the NW Kayak site. Life has gotten in the way the last few years, but I am determined to get out a lot more.
thanks for adding me,

Hello Everyone! I joined quite a while ago but finally made it to this post. I own a 13.5 Jackson Kayak, and no experience with kayaking, so I hope to learn a lot from all of you(I have learned what I can from reading many posts). I definitely need some guidance and when fishing the big blue, but I think I have all the essentials to start(pdf, radio, gps/fishfinder...etc. I would be forever grateful if any one would give me some kayak surf lessons or learn hands on here or there. Again, I have learned lots with all the information here and hope to once give some good input. Cheers and hope to see you guys soon in the water this year! Oh, and in the pictures its my gf, son, kayak, and myself.

Tried kayak fishing about 10 years ago with college friend on Monterey Bay and Half Moon Bay. Got pretty wet and had zero bites, but it was still one of my all time favorite fishing trips. Not sure why I haven't tried it since.
Going to see if I can get my 12 and 13 year old boys interested. Will look for a calm weekend, tandem rentals, and a good guide.

Howdy,
Just moved to the jewel box in Capitola and have 2 Pro Scuppers that will be venturing into the waters. Have taken her out once on a ver, very low tide with just a tad bit of seaweed....guess that's good to keep the juvies away. Took a jaunt down to Elkhorn and spent a wonderful early morning of glass and sunshine, which I didn't know existed down there. Then the paddle back, included a nice wind with risiong tides along with 40 rental kayaks, which by 11 was 150, but still a beautiful paddle.
Excited about the area, the people and of course the water.
Name is - Dominic and I am a recently divorced 51 yr old whose main passion is air miles on a mtbike.

Hi all,
My name is Stephen, biggerthanyours. I live in Clovis/Shaver Lake, CA. I purchased a couple of used Hobie Outbacks for fishing with my brother Tom and setting one up now for Striper, Salmon and Steelhead fishing for the American River in Sacramento. My brother Tom (thatÂ’s why I got two kayaks) lives in Sacramento and I enjoy fishing with him on the American River. I also plan on using the kayaks for trout fishing, but interested in the big three SÂ’s mentioned earlier. I really prefer fly fishing in the river, but not opposed to using baitcasters or spinning reel casting for success.
I am also interested in fishing the Delta for Stripers, the ocean for Halibut, Rock fish, large Lingcod and Salmon on a kayak. But, I donÂÂ’t know the better areas to fish, the different techniques and gear required to create or allow for success. Assistance will be greatly appreciated. [emoji848][emoji106]

The salmon run has started here at the Delta in Antioch. I bet a guy named Danny and the guy next to him caught a 7 over. Anyway, my point being is that Danny is always there and I remember by the name Danny Florencio an old basketball player from the Philippines that passed away years ago. I always grab the spot where Danny is right before he gets there now and when i see him I dont mind standing on the rock next to him.
I again want to thank all that donated to me for me to survive it helps my family and I a lot. Also for CCK donating the kayak. One day I cant wait to be back on the water with all of you. I may not remember some of your names but just give me the first letter and my mind will figure out. I learned to remember things by the word WRAP write repeat associate picture. It helped me a lot. I still go through therapy and I am slowly being wined off of my anti seizure meds. I had NORSE they still dont know the cause. I cant wait to thank the doctors and nurses who also took care of me at UCSF.
Anyway, to make a short story long. Lol.

Top of the afternoon fellow yakers and future dive buddies. Having limited time along the coast left (moving to Colorado), I'm left with a couple spear goals to accomplish. Looking to tag a halibut over 30 lbs, any ling cod over 30", and maybe a northern white seabass if the ghost ever appears. I'm willing to put in the work scaling cliffs, paddling to far off reefs, and whatever else the lovely sport offers for our die hard fisherman out there. In Seaside, CA, so if you ever need a buddy to run down the sur coast with, or just want to take a dip and comb the sand for flatties, consider shooting me a message.
Thanks everyone for letting me join the club!

Our family coleman camped outside Chester on Warner Creek. It was a great camping spot along side the creek for our kids. Bears frequented the area, even during the day. I caught some nice fish with a spinner and fly fishing. I was told that huge browns were caught in that area, in the fall, when they leave lake Almanor to spawn.

I love Warner creek....I fish it a lot in the late summer. There are some big browns that cruise up there in the fall for sure. There's a few bears around, not near as many as where I used to live in Siskiyou County but there still a few around.

Welcome!
My dad grew up in Chester and I grew up in Susanville. I don’t get back up there very often with no more family in the area but I do want to make a trip back to the old stomping grounds one of these years. I imagine it’s changed a bit since then.
My PB trout was bank fishing out of the stream in Hamilton branch above the lake near the water pipe. 7lbs rainbow. It was a monster to catch and I had to go for a swim to fight it in waning light.

Hello,
My name is Jonathan Ridley (screen name JRidley) and I am new to this forum and new to kayaking, angling, and freediving/spearfishing. I have a 15 ft Malibu Kayak eXtreme and I am still outfitting it with some essentials to make ocean-going safer: GPS, spare paddle, fish finder, visipole (light + flag), replacing some broken eyelets, installing bungees, figuring out how to anchor the kayak if diving from it, etc. I. Looking forward to learning more about this rewarding sport and getting to know some of the members here.

Started trolling Hoochies for Halibut with no luck and then switch to mooching for Lingcod. I was able to land my personal best Lingcod with the advice from Bushy to send back down one of the small Croakers that kept stealing our bait! I had a really good time and I learned sooo much about ocean kayak fishing. Thank you Bushy for a great day!

Hello all! DesertDawg - Brian C from Indianapolis , IN.
Have had a wakeboard boat for years and just recently picked up a couple of kayaks. Goal is to work some one on one time with the kids, catch fish & stay healthy. Found the forum on one of the youtube channels I ran across.
I picked up an old Jackon Cuda & found a great deal on the Tamarack for the kids.
My son's maiden voyage on the Walmart special shows you can catch fish on either.
I hope to post again soon with a pic of the fish that bit into his!

Hello my name is Brad Wolfe. I bought a used Cobra Fish ‘n’ Dive and I took it out at Rockaway beach a few weeks ago when the water was real calm. I caught fish, I was ~ 50’ away from a whale when it came up for air and got to smell its stinky breath. It was just great! Now kayak fishing is all I can think about. Not metaphorically, I really can’t stop, if I’m not daydreaming about where to go or how to fish, I’m googling it on my phone. Needless to say, my wife and kids are getting annoyed... Not to mention, the excitement of going out fishing keeps me up at night. A little embarrassing, but what can I say, I’m simple...
Anyway I joined NCKA months ago, so I figured it was about time I made my introduction and got on with it. I hope I’m doing this right...

Hey, y'all! I'm new to fishing. Come to it from the kayaking world where I mainly enjoyed rock gardening and touring. But about a year ago I discovered I could put fish on the table for free. Great idea, right? LOL! Hundreds of dollars later ...

Welcome, I remember spending obsessive hours studying for safety through these threads because of fear of dying and many encouragements from fellow kayakers.
I'm guessing you may have kayaked a bit already? Practicing kayaking in the areas that you want to fish, while being paranoididly safe is your best start. I remember spending hours driving all over the bay area looking and observing known launches and picturing the procedure and not even launching. I became obsessed studying weather and tides and still am. Going to launches to compare weather pages to actual conditions. Eventually you cannot stand it because you just gotta go, like Eddie, not me, but the other Eddie... :smt005 I tell ya', that first push and leap aboard is the beginning of the end. Even if you launch and are back on shore in 10 minutes from your first "very safe" awkward lesson, it is a victory because you got water time. I also remind you, there is nothing "safe" about the ocean and kayak fishing, it is an adventure to be on the water anywhere you are.
After you get confident in kayaking, with all your safety gear managed, the next step is to read all the threads you can find on the species you are targeting then go kayak "with a fishing rod". I'm guessing you've fished for many years. Over time I'm sure you'll be teaching us all your discoveries and other supernewbs will benefit as well as all of us.
Like others will always mention, there are professional guides on this forum, LoletaEric, Bushy, that would have saved me countless hours, money, and fails by tagging along with a pro for some solid lessons that took many trips to discover.
Hope to see a pic of the scenery of your maiden voyage... :smt006
-

As Eddie said there are guides like Bushy, Loleta, and myself on here. I would highly suggest taking one of my free clinics that I do for NCKA down here in Monterey. The next clinic is March 7th and we will be going over rescues and re-entries. Book a spot at (800)649-5357 it is completely free.

Finally learned how to catch stripers last year. This would have been Marina Beach, town where I live with my wife, dog, two cats, 6 baby chicks, 8 koi in the pond with waterfall. Plenty of surf fishing, and kayak fishing. Last time I did some freshwater fishing was two summers ago on a bucket list adventure... drove to Idaho and spent three weeks there. I could get used to living there, I think. LOTS of water, lots of fish. ‘Course, lots of snow, too. Anyway, this is me. Oh but I was pretty once upon a time... Glory Days! More to come!

I teach English (and manners) at Salinas High School. I can see retirement just on the horizon... and lots and lots of fishing.

A couple more to establish some legitimacy around here... but, admittedly, still learning the game. Definitely ready to buy a Hobie Outback in the next couple of days... would appreciate any advice where to purchase, how to get it rigged properly for or Monterey Bay, any where else Central / Nor Cal ocean. Currently using my first buy 2016 Ocean Trident... big, and wanting to step up to pedal instead of paddle. But this worked well for a start! Caught plenty of fish in this... never did get used to the Humminbird I bought and installed myself. Looking for advice, there, especially... right finder... right installation. I’m ready to buy my 2020 Outback now, but will wait until I can do some research here. Thanks for any input!

Fished this same spot last Thursday, where I took this picture last year... Pacific Grove. (Was trying pontoons out for crabbing. Or rough days.) Last Thursday, bit slow... one short ling, various rockfish.

Just saying what's up. Joined today. Looking to learn. I've been in the water all my life, but not so much for fishing. Surfing. Kiteboarding. Sailing. Diving (tech diver). Had a few years spear fishing while in FL. I've either got a bad touch with a pole or a curse cause I have trouble landing fish :smt005

thanks! i'm mainly looking to find a buddy to look after / after me while we paddle out to the reefs or buoys.

Welcome, Luis. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of experience on the water, which is always a plus.
I know it gets hot out there in Santa Cruz during the summer, but you really should consider dressing for cold water immersion and wearing a PFD. I’ll leave it at that.

Hey Alex, appreciate for the note despite it being a touchy subject : ) I agree, normally do. This particular area is like my backyard pool (ex lifeguard and competitive swimmer blah blah). Thanks man. I'm actually planning to dawn patrol tomorrow if anyone [local] wants a "buddy".

It’s your call, of course, but I think you’ll find that this group takes safety seriously. We pride ourselves on not being “that guy” you see in the news - year after year - getting rescued because they headed out on a kayak without the proper safety gear.
For the record, I used to be “that guy” too. Avid surfer, good swimmer, etc, etc. I never needed to be rescued, but in hindsight I was lucky. I used to do a lot of kayak fishing all along the Central Coast wearing nothing but board shorts with an old PFD stashed behind my seat or even in the hatch. I’m glad that some of the OG members of this group set me straight when I joined up about 9 years ago.

I assure you, I take precautions after 30+yrs in the ocean and boating. I don't like to brag or start * shows so I kept my message short. The pic was taken by my 5yro. We must have been 100m from cowells, 60 to the stairs by indicators. Well within butt naked swim range.
Anyways.. I paddled out by mile buoy at sunrise (4/3 pfd vhf dry bag etc..) and caught a nice rockfish and a few other small guys that got returned home. Funny story - a small ling tried to take advantage of some bait I had on the sabiki of my 30" baitcaster and got tangled. Not every day I can say I took out a ling on a #10 hook on 6# mono 😁

Hi everyone,
My name's Kevin and i'm from San Francisco. I grew up freshwater fishing, but I wanted to get more into saltwater fishing this year in 2020. Haven't been able to get out as much as I wanted for obvious reasons, but I did use this time to pick up a new Hobie Outback on craigslist. Hope to make some trips out with all of you!

What's up guys and ladies? Avi here, been kayak fishing for about ten years but more seriously in the past few years. After I smashed my previous boat at Baker Beach I wasn't able to get my own ride until very recently, so now I'm armed with pedal drive and am ready to get back out there (safely) again.
In the photo you can see me and my significant other...she's since left me :smt010 said my place was too hot :smt003

Greetings everyone. 👋
I’m a welder in real life, and a newbie to The fishing and kayaking Obsessions. As you can see from my posted picture, I’m a little excited. Selling off a motorcycle and a power hammer to fund the first of many “ implements of fishing “ so it’s all or nothing with me. I live in Joshua tree, ca. So all of my Kayaking adventures will start with a road trip, and at least a week off. God is good.
Bought a ascend 128t (last one In stock on the planet I think) and have a Lowrance hook2 5 triple shot on the way.
Also have a used ($20 and a twelve pack) perception sunchaser 9.5 that I got, to try it out twice on Big Bear Lake to see if I liked it first...I DID!
Thanks in advance for all of your time and advise to come in the future, God bless (He does) and happy kayaking. See you in the water👍

Hi all. Monterey newbie here. This pic was taken at Palmilla Cove in Cabo. The Amberjack is my largest kayak fish to date. It was caught jigging a Krocodile in 40'. It was my first outing on my brand new Hobie Revo, and I couldn't get the fish finder to work. So I fished structure where I had caught smaller fish before. It almost pulled me over! ....An epic day.

Hey Y'all,
My name is Sage Marshall and my username is Sagafanta. About a year ago, I moved to the East Bay from Colorado. I'm primarily a fly fisherman, but I've been getting into kayak fishing out here during the last couple of months. I've caught some halibut in the Bay and went out into the ocean for rockfish once but was unsuccessful. I'm excited to meet some of you and learn about different types of kayak fishing. I'm on an Old Town Bigwater 132, which I've enjoyed so far.
Tight lines! Thanks for having me in the group.

Great! After I posted it, I could see it - I guess the preview doesn't do a 'complete' preview. ;-)
Thanks Jason!!

Hi All,
Jordan here. I'm located in the East Bay, and I've mostly fished from shore in both freshwater and saltwater. I've only been kayak fishing for a couple of months, and I've mostly been out to lakes and reservoirs. I've wanted to get out in the bays/ocean, but haven't been able to find someone to fish with. I'm excited to join the community, and can't wait to meet and fish with folks here. Feel free to reach out if anyone is looking for a fishing buddy!

Hi there, my name is Jon and I just bought a Titan X 12.5 as a replacement for my Boston Whaler Dauntless. I fished the Dauntless in the delta, bay and outside the gate going after all of the usual suspects. I wanted to change things up and simplify, so I am going this route.
