First I would like to thank Craig and Linelle for hosting such a wonderful event and all of the sponsors. What a turnout and it is only a matter of time before Albion and GS have more participants than the Steve Moyer.  Yeah the Moyer has giant yellow tail but Albion and GS are better venues and the brotherhood/sisterhood of NCKA is second to none.

My journey began on Friday with a pleasant drive from the east bay and was followed by the Shu brothers and entourage for the last few miles. I was following a white pickup with 2 kayaks on 128 when a large doughnut shaped float flew out of the back of the truck and I had to swerve to avoid it. Finally made it to the campground and unloaded. Turns out I was camping right next to the Shu brothers and they broke out their tackle. OMG, looked like they were going on a 10 day long range trip on the Royal Polaris. What a quiver of production Calstar rods and people call me a tackle junkie. :smt044 They didn’t have a 700 XLH which I think is the best all around Calstar rod for NCAL kayak fishing so I lent it to Roger and gave both of them some of my custom lures. I knew they had some serious fishing skills because I watched them clean some impressive stringers at GS5. Dennis also has a great sense of humor, even when he is not ragging on Roger. Cooked dinner for Craig and Linelle and Adam and Freddie came by to clean up the leftovers. Ran into Abman and decided to launch at grey light then hit the sack early.

Met Abman and Dr Habanero around 530 AM and launched in darkness with headlamps. The Staufeners launched before us so I knew the competition was serious. Paddled out of the cove with Abman in the lead and made it to about 90 FOW just inside of the buoy. It was gnarly with a mixed swell, 5-10 knot wind out of the south and a fast north drift. Abman turned around and I followed him back into the cove. On our way in Jimbo passed us followed by the Shu brothers. I didn’t have any lures heavier than 4 oz so for me the drift was too fast for me to fish even with a drift chute. I have never fished Albion before so the next 5 hours was basically staring at my sonar and looking for visual structure. Worked the north side of the cove first and bagged black, China and kelp rockies. Headed to the south side of the cove and found a pinnacle in 75-80 FOW which came up to 30 FOW with a small flat top. Worked the lee side of the pinnacle and bagged a 29.5” ling. By this time it was around 930AM and it was time to find a cabbie. Unfortunately it turned out to be the fish of a thousand casts. Worked the edges of the bull kelp with custom twin tails and big hammers both casting and jigging. Ended up way inside the cove on the south side near the big rock with the light on top. Got a hard takedown on the twin tail but it didn’t stick so I casted up drift 50’ and slowly retrieved it along the bottom and wham, a 20” cabbie on the clip. Rockfish are really stupid.  :smt005 No trout would hit the same lure twice. Paddled in around 11 AM and was the first to weigh in with a total weight of 15# 3 oz. All fish were caught on a custom green twin tail on a 3 oz glow orange jig head with a mylar and glow skirt. Was pretty sure I was in the running but the Shu brothers and Team Chancho had yet to weigh in and of course the Staufeners. Since they stayed on the outside, I figured they were catching fish. Luckily I had enough to hold off Roger who came in 3rd with only 2 fish to weigh. If he had caught a legal cabbie, he would have won. Team Chancho had the most amazing stringer of fish which included a 20# salmon. Luckily salmon don’t count.  :smt005

Got up at 5 AM on Sunday and was going to go after salmon with Chuck but since I had more fish than I could eat in the next 4 days, I decided to head home early and beat the traffic. I decided to not freeze any fish 2 years ago because I think fresh fish taste much better and it keeps me from taking too much from the sea which has been so good to me.

I attend these events to hang out with guys I don’t see very often like Joel, Marv, Craig, Chuck, Adam, Freddie, Howard and many others.  Winning is secondary to the camaraderie of being part of NCKA.  I have learned so much from all of you over the last 5 years. Thank you and God bless you all.

Scott

I guess I will do a write up...

One day two years ago I decided I wanted to learn how to fish. It has been a steep learning curve ever since, as I do not have friends or family to go to for advice. It took me two months fishing the American River for 10-12 hours a day before I caught my first fish. My wife and I spent so much time in Fisherman's Warehouse spending money and asking advice she ended up getting a job there. About a year ago her boss wanted someone in the Sacramento store be be knowledgeable on kayak fishing, so we got kayaks and the learning curve got even steeper.

I am in the Army National Guard and a while ago I found out I am being deployed again. My previous deployment was a pretty low time for me, so my wife Kat has been a big motivator in me going to NCKA events, because she wants me to have fun before going. My first time in the Ocean should have been GS5 but due to a less then quality tent we were soaking wet and freezing and in no mood to go out.

My first time fishing in the ocean was on Rich's charter the day before the Albion tournament. When everyone was getting ready to drive to the harbor I decided to go. Being last minute I did not bring any gear with me, so I was stuck using the boats rods and set-ups. Some how I manage to land 14 rock fish, sent two back down, gave 3 away.

That day I asked Roger and Dennis if I could tag along with them for the tournament as I had no ocean kayaking experience, or fish finder/GPS. We go out and I am struggling to keep up because I am paddling and they are peddling. I was so lost and confused as to where we were but they managed to find some great spots to fish. It was non-stop action. We were all pretty much limited out but Roger was still looking for a cab or greenling, and Dennis was looking for a keeper ling. After getting my three for the weigh in (and loosing half my gear in the process) Roger lent me some gear and suggested I try mooching as the commercial salmon season just opened, and we were talking about it. After several more lost setups I get what I think is a sang. But I soon realized its a fish on but it was a big one, I was thinking a 30 inch ling, no way I could get lucky enough to catch a salmon as well. It was not that hard to pull it to the surface when I realized it was a nice chrome salmon, once it saw me the fight was on, fast forward 15 minutes and a hard fight and the 20# salmon is on the stringer.

We came in and everyone wanted to talk to me and I was just beat, I don't even know if I was making coherent sentences. I owe this experience to Roger and Dennis, I can not say how much I appreciate their help. Getting second place was only possible because of them.

Ryan

What a great event!  Thanks Craig and Linda for putting on a terrific tournament.
This was my first ever NCKA event as I have been lurking in the shadows for a few years.   I found the camaraderie to be so friendly and open. . . and the food yesterday (and today) was as good as it gets for taste, quality, quantity, variety, and uniqueness.  Some of the eating highlights were Adam's chips and dip. It was so tasty (better than restaurant quality or Juanita's home kitchen) and the spread had a mild right-side place on the dish increasing to a very spicy section on the left side.  And the gracious Adam was walking around the campground with a bag of chips and his dip and serving everyone, even the passengers of the cars driving through the campground.  Then there was chef Cameron putting together his paella with all the ingredients on separate containers ready to go in just like TV's Amerca's Test Kitchen.  And for all the onlookers Mudshark was pulling out his smoked wild turkey from the Brinkman,  BBQ's chicken appeared out of no where, David was serving a plate of his delicious sirloin steak strips marinated for three days and just pulled off the grill, Freddie's (?) camp brought over a bowl of outstanding spicy Thai (?) sauce and rice to dip,  and I got out some home smoked salmon and Lake Trout. When all was done Cameron brought the paella to the pot luck and I don't think it made to the serving table as everyone was getting scoops as he passed through the eating area on the way to the food table.  Excellent paella.  There was so much delicious food on the table (at the start).  So many good cooks!
Back to fishing . . . I stayed on for flat water ocean conditions today.  I had to recover my shattered pride after a dismal tournament.  After fishing from 7 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. I took second to last place - 119th? and not 120th only because I found an unnamed sportsman who claimed not to get a bite and thus bagged 120th (I got 5 or 6 hits.).  Oh, I forgot to whisper . . . we didn't catch one fish . . . sh-h-h-h - you can read that as "keep you voice down" or possibly as "#*%\^".  Today I did manage 6 Rockfish, 2 Lings, and a nice 21" Cab as well as losing a few lings.  (Thanks Hammer, Bird, and David for swimbaits, lead jigs and squid respectively).
And to finish off the day, Freddie and company were serving up fresh uni (sea urchin roe) from a dive a couple hours before.  They had the picnic table spread with urchins when I passed by.  Was there a full limit of 35 urchins (whole and open) (?) piled on the table along with soy sauce and lime wedges and spoons for any who wished to enjoy it.   Wow . . . just like raw oysters.  I'm sold and swore to deplete the West Coast urchin population.  What a way to finish the event.
All in all a great time!
- Tom

I too had a great time and it was nice to see in person a lot of faces that I'm so used to seeing only on my computer screen!

The potluck was kick ass. I hope a lot of you got to try my abalone ceviche  :smt001

As for fishing, I ended up with a 17" cabbie, and released a 22.5" ling and a would-be limit of gophers.
Too bad the weather wasn't one day ahead as yesterday looked flat calm the whole drive down Highway 1.

Many thanks to Craig and Linelle!

Thanks Craig for putting on a great event. Scott Congrats on for well deserved victory( I only wish I would have follwed you back in and fished next to you) :smt010 . It seems that everyone I was fishing with ended up doing great. I headed up north on the fast drift and was able to land around 8 lings with nothing over 24. A few nice blacks but no cabs. Abman and I dove  on Sunday no fish but with vis was 25+ it was very enjoyable. saw a lot of bucket abs but not a lot of fish in the area but still love just swimming around . It was so flat on Sunday , one could only wish it would have been a day earlier. Family had a great time and can't wait till next year!

Craig,
Thanks for a great event.  Putting on such an event takes a lot of work.  More than most people realize so thanks a bunch.

I had  a great time meeting many of the NCKAers and fishing was pretty good for me.  Saturday I couldn't keep the small lings off my hooks.  Ended with 7 lings kept 2 one 23 inches and one 24 a little fatty Cab and some small rock fish.  Ended with 9 pounds and something. It was a fun day.  The food was also amazing thanks to everyone who cooked.  Hope you guys liked the smoked wild turkey...it was pretty jucy and turned out pretty well.

Anyway, hope to get to the ocean again soon.  Actually, I'll be fishing in Santa Cruz on Sunday with the Mudshark, if anyone wants to join us.

Joe.

Where to begin?
Team Montana arrived on Wednesday, and got the three bedroom two bathroom, four car garage tent put up. Relaxed to the dancing flames of the campfire while Cody began crabbing.  Woke up and hit the cove for Cody's maiden voyage in a kayak into the big blue in the tandem with dad. Shilo was in tow with the prowler 13.  No fish to be had, in fact, not even one bite. It was a special time with mys on though, and it was well enjoyed. Friday morning, we all met at our camp to head to the charter boat. Special thanks to Noyo Fishing Center for working with me on the booking of the charter for two years in a row-please consider them for your charter fishing needs.  We had a near full boat and a great crew that tried their best to find biting fish. The ocean was unleashing its fury on our little charter boat, and unfortunately, several people got severely sea sick. I still have a bruise from hitting the rail over and over again.  The bite did turn on towards the end of the trip, and some really cool fish showed up, Alain Satre caught a tiger fish, which was super cool, and hopefully someone took a pic, a nice copper, quillback, rosies, gophers, lots of chinas, a cabbie, salmon, and some lings. The keeper lings went to Shilo Camp, the newly aquired member of Team Montana! Special thanks to Fisherman's Warehouse for the support and the donations to the kids/womens prize items! Shilo won the new rod for biggest fish, and every kid and woman on the charter recieved prizes and shwag, ranging from crabbing rings and snares to misc items donated by Naoki. Cody Brockman won a spinning combo for first fish, and Berta Knoles won most fish for the womens/kids on the boat. Congrats! Next year I hope the water gods are more kind to us and bless us with conditions like on Sunday! The charter raised $810 for the Mooch/Shicken fund!!! Thank you everyone that contributed!
Saturday, team Montana launched to rough water, and I was able to find a huge grassy right off the bat! Same exact spot I caught a big grassy last year as my first fish! Then I went on the big cabbie hunt to no love. Shilo was catching gophers and I was catching blues and blacks. Near the end, Shilo tucks into a pocket at the river mouth in a few feet of water and nails a ling! That put her in second place in the women's bracket. Congrats baby! I ended up with five fish, and the biggest being the grassie at 3 pounds 15 ounces.
Sunday, wow! Sunday.... Sheet of glass, and we launched and bee-lined to the boiler rock.  First drop I caught a small verm, and then a gazillion gophers and chinas. I kept the floaters, and released the fish that came from shallow water. I foul hooked a ling, and let it go. Shilo caught her first vermillion, which will be added to the trophy room mounts! It was an 18" specimen, undoubtedly she will catch larger, but this one is her first and is special. She also caught several small gophers and chinas. She tucked into her ling hole, and I heard all heck breaking loose, and I thought a seal was trying to board her kayak. It was a ling of epic proportions! I saw a tail break water, and thrash around like a thresher! Then she yells that it took it all! I thought she lost the rod too! Come to find out it broke off the big hammer swim bait she was using and she was not at all cool with that! She spent the next two hours trying to not just get that lingzilla, but her swimbait back!

Here are some pics of the weekend, and if charter boat pics were taken, please post them up too guys, thanks!

Hey Craig and Linelle....Thank you very much for putting this together. You 2 are awesome! Congratulations to all the winners.
Rockwalker (IAN) and I left Thursday and met up with a few cats and did the Booneville stomp. After a few refreshing beverages, we motored up to camp with Cameron on our heels.  Once we setup camp and tapped the Double RedRocket, the party began!
I blew my load fishing Friday (2 lings, blacks, copper, 17"red, greenling) cause I couldn't get anything started Saturday. Conditions weren't the best and I ended up feeling like crap the rest of the day. Eating everybodies food helped out tho. NCKA has some serious Camp Cookies!
Hey NovatoDave and the gang, Thanks for the grub and talking steelhead.
Howard, I enjoyed hanging out with you and thank you for the photo gallery.
My parents even showed up for most of the day monitoring the radio and checking out the catches. They were impressed with the diversity and camaraderie of the our group and even felt a little embarrassed because of everybody offering them food. Thanks guys
Melissa would like to say sorry to all those who couldn't hang with the Double RedRocket. :smt003. Her plan worked :smt005. 9.4abv has a way of f-ing you up.

Congrats to the winners and thanks to Craig for all of his hardwork in organizing this event.  Craig I am sorry I did not make it back to the weighin or party, but, something came up and I mean literally came up.  My bro and I set out early and started fishing around 6 am and in the first half hour I had already caught 8 fish.  Then my brother comes over and tells me he is feeling sea sick and I tell him to let me know if he needs to go back in.  We keep fishiing and about ten minutes later I land a 27" ling and as I turn to show my bro I notice that his head is bent over his yak and he is chumming.  I released the ling back into the water telling it I'll be back for you next year when your biigger and told my bro lets go back in.  I take him back to his house at the ranch and let her wife wipe his chin, change his diaper, and cover him with his blanky, while I went out and split wood.

LMAO!  Have had the same experience with my bro!  (minus the splitting wood part)

I just love NCKA... thanx to Team Ravensblack for all the hard work, lots of fun hanging with everyone, doing the fishprints, jamming on the guit-fiddle for whoever wanted to hear, and I want to personally thank all the Cabazon in the sea, you guys have been very good to me, $510 for this one, and I took $300 at the Half Moon Bay derby a few years back, maybe because Ive released some Fatty Bean Cabbies over the years...
And thanx to the Leepins for stealing my kayak on Sunday morning, that was kind of funny:) LMFAO...
A huge congrats to the winners, Scott, now you have a boat for the dog!

One of the NCKA Brothers gave me a couple of home brews to taste at Albion and due to my acute CRS I don't recall his screen name.  In addition to saying thanks, I have some feedback on the brew if you can give me your screen name.  Sorry for the thread jack but I'm hoping the person will be reading the Albion thread.

Thanks,

Whew! What a weekend! This has been one of the best fishing weekends ever for me for so many reasons.

Thank you so very much Craig and Linelle for doing such a wonderful job, this wouldn’t have been possible without you.

My brother Old #7 (Dennis) and I were accompanied by his two sons, wife, along with another set of kids. The best thing about this event was the demonstration of what a family NCKA really is… from the time we got there to the second we left there was so much camaraderie, generosity, and so much more I can’t even put into words. The 13 year old (Jordan) was so impressed that he said to me, wow everyone is so friendly, do you even know these people? By the end of the weekend, he wants to come back and participate as an angler next year. Then there was the food. Then there was meeting more cool people. Oh yeah, then there was fishing… finishing third was just a huge bonus that I never expected to happen!

Congrats Scott, and thank you for giving us some of your homemade lures, along with demo-ing your calstar. Another example of generosity within this group that blows me away. You are a class act and this was a well deserved win.

We knew Team Chancho and Kat from GS5 because we camped next to them, so turns out we were next to them again this time…sweet! We bonded last time because the 3 of us tried Balut for the first time together thanks to Darius…good job out there Ryan, I felt sorry for you for a while because as we headed north, it was a little rough, the drift was fast, and keeping up with the Hobies was a difficult task. We could hold over pinnacles and rock piles, which we went looking for about 2-3 miles north, while ryan dropped his line and then drifted away pretty quickly, and had to work twice as hard to get back to where we were. Then you caught a salmon and I stopped feeling sorry for you. Lol  Congrats man, you deserved it,  both 2nd place and that salmon.

I ended up catching a huge red by trolling a purple/black 5” swimbait on a 1 oz leadhead while we were looking for other spots, and she was pulling hard! Then I caught the ling on a hootchie type setup that was killin em all day… ask Old #7 to tie you guys some, that’s where I got them. Those were the two fish that really counted for me, I couldn’t get a greenling or a cabbie for the life of me, but in the end, I was happy enough to get the ling and red.

Can this weekend get any better? YES! We wanted the get the four kids on some fish, so we chartered a six pack Sunday with Craig from “Beat em and Eat em” recommended by the owners of the campgraound. I must say he was super cool, really took care of us and made sure the kids had a good time. Dennis had been corresponding with him and figuring out if the weather was gonna cooperate, which it did on Sunday, it was beautiful out there! First thing we did was drop off crab pots, then off to a spot that found us 2 limits of mostly huge blacks, as well as 2 lings. Unfortunately, the kids started getting sick, so we dropped them off and went salmon fishing! That’s what I wanted after seeing Ryan’s. First 3 bites…silvers. The 4th bite feels pretty good, its pulling line here and there, then….it comes off. We only have a half hour left, so our chances of getting a keeper are slipping away. Then we get to a ridge going from 320 to 270 marking a lot of bait and woo hoo! Fish on! Dennis fights this thing in and guess what? Purple back and black lips mean it’s a keeper! The skipper says heck with quittin time, lets troll through there again. So guess what? Fish on! This time I’m up again, and I land my first ocean salmon ever! See why this has been one of the best fishing experiences of my life? As a bonus, we go back to pick up the crab pots and get about a dozen keepers. If you are interested, I would highly recommend Craig, he really took care of us.

So thank you everyone for such a great experience not only for myself, but the family we brought with us. We can’t wait for the next one!

Roger

Well, my story of getting to Albion started back in January when Jay (Fish'n Jay) and Craig (Ravensblack) started chatting about us coming down from Idaho for the event. NCKA has been great to us over the years and helped us survive living in Vallejo, CA for 5 years. After a few chats Jay and I decided that Albion would be our big trip for the summer 2011! We arrived on Thursday at the campground and set up camp. It was great to "come home." :groupwave

Friday we hit the water! It was my first time on the ocean in about 1 1/2 years...what fun. Caught and released a few fish and headed in early...the seas were not good to me on Friday  :what

Tournament day...I had a great launch and headed out with Jay. We fought the angry seas as we headed north. I caught a few blacks and decided to keep one. My personal best for this day was that I managed to fish the whole tournament (6 hours on the water). I appreciated the support from Ben (Guitarzan), Naoaki, and Craig (Ravensblack support on the radio!) I paddled in around 12:30 to a great reception on the shore, my black weighed in at 1.3 lbs and good enough for 3rd place in the women's division  :smt001

The potluck Saturday was absolutely amazing! Thanks to everyone for the fine food and great chatter. We enjoyed hanging out with Tino's family at the adjacent campground for s'mores and wine. Thanks guys!

Sunday good-byes are tough when you are not sure when you will be back again, but we said a few and then headed out again. Another 5 hours on the ocean (Lake Albion). The seas were great and Jay had to convince me that it was time to head back in around 5 PM. Came back with 2 Chinas and 1 Gopher. Jay cleaned my fish and we got them vacuum sealed for the trip home. Together we ended up with about 5 lbs. of fish for the freezer. I know that frozen fish is not the best, but it the only way to get our fish home.

Sunday evening we hung out in Jed-mo Nation! Great food and great company. Nice to relax and enjoy the night.

Monday morning came with more good-byes (more like "see ya later")  and out on the river we went with the dogs. Jay and I enjoyed the afternoon at North Coast Brewery then enjoyed a walk and some ice cream. Life is indeed very good! Back at camp hung out with Tommy, Allen, and Ed around the campfire and under some amazing stars.

Here it is Tuesday morning, the seas do not look good...wind is blowing. So we will spend the day at camp getting cleaned up and packed for the trek home starting tomorrow.

This vacation has been wonderful and we do plan to come back "home" to Albion every couple years. In the meantime we will keep up with everyone here and on facebook.

Thank you Craig and Linelle for everything you do all year to put this event on. We hope to see you in Idaho sometime!

Chadrock thanks for the pics of the pups of Albion! Our dogs loved the attention from the NCKA family!

Thanks Craig and Jinelle for all your effort, first time to Albion = nice. Congrats to Scott and Brandi and the rest of the winners.  And Ben for big fish honors. Wow Ryan, first time on the salt? Awesome.

Great food and drink again, thanks everyone.

Saw friends, met new ones and somehow missed a few I wanted to see/meet. I hope I do a better job of remembering who's who next time around.

Biggest surprise of the weekend was talking to Zilla for a long time before he fessed up to who he was. lol

Fish'nbrew (Martin), that was me that gave you the homebrew. Nice talking with you and I'm interested in what you think of my beer.

I'm proud to be a part of NCKA, one big happy family.

There is some comfort in knowing that, in an extreme emergency, Marcos (Rockroach) and Ian (Rockwalker) were in the adjacent campsite with three kegs of beer.  :smt003 I rarely drink alcohol; so the hangover lasted for a couple of days.   :smt010

Met Zilla for the first time; didn't realize who he was at first because of the missing beard. Thanks, ChuckE, for frying up the turkey...your fried fish was excellent. And I finally got to try Craig's delicious ribs (can I have seconds next time?). Almost lost my appetite for food completely when I watched Mooch and others chew on some Balut. :smt012

Thanks to Linelle and Craig for all your efforts.

I have to admit I was a little burned out from 4 days of Mtn. biking, paddling and partying at Lake Tahoe, so I shied away from the late nites, and stuck to beer!
It was great to hang with the NCKA crew though, and to make it to the salt for the first time this year was so satisfying.
Fishing was slow for me on Sat. as I started by losing 6 bites. Finally, I landed a barely legal ling followed by 4 more. Then, while fishing next to SCTrace I stuck a 20.5 Cab that was to be my big fish of the day. The water wasn't too bad, I just didn't want to do some newbie move like reaching back to open my Plano box or fool with something that wasn't absolutely essential. It was great to be on the water with NCKA buds all around, I felt pretty safe out there.

After coming in Sat. the party started early for me! After a couple of beers and a little carousing, I chowed on some stellar food at the potluck, watched ChuckE fry a turkey, had a couple of more beers, then went to my tent at about 8pm. to change into some warmer clothes... Never made it back out of my tent! :smt044 I guess the 2 five hour mtn. bike rides at 8,000 ft. elevation earlier in the week finally got to me :smt044

Woke up Sunday at 3:30am! Made some Top Ramen and started getting my fishing stuff together. Finally got OTW at about 8am. :smt005
Paddled out dragging an E-chip/anchovie in nice glassy conditions, went South and met up with Ricci - last year's Albion winner. We had both stopped the Salmo hunt by then and were meat hunting for Rockies. Soon enough I got a nice Gopher, then a small Blue, on my shrimp fly/squid, followed by a nice 18.5" Verm. Then after watching Juan/Mako masterfully cast a sculpin looking swimbait with no bait on it, and fight and land a 30" ling I was feeling I was in a good spot. Not 15 minutes later I dropped down a red glitter jig with Halloween plastic and squid for a nice 32"+ Ling. That hawg fought like a champ! Stoked to pop the cherry on my new Ugly Stick/Revo combo with that fish! Stayed out just a little bit longer, but felt I had already taken enough from the sea, and headed in.

Dawdled around camp for a couple of hours getting my stuff together, then finally cleaned my fish and stuck the ice chest in the Subaru. Meant to stop by Fishmaster's camp but heard he was out diving, Desert Diver my next door camp neighbor was out and about as well, Naoaki and Ashley were in camp so I said my goodbyes - wanting to stay another week but knowing I had to drive.

Russ/desert diver, man you are a cool dude thanx for sharing your dinner and drink on Fri nite, and for am coffee sat. I owe you bud.
Fishworks and Christina and little moochie, you were great campmates to hang with on my first NCKA salt campout!
I met a bunch more NCKA'ers and had a awesome time.

See you all at the next epic event!

NovatoDave here, just a quick but very LARGE THANK YOU to Craig and the entire NCKA brotherhood (and sisters too!). The weekend was a non-stop blast. I am feeling so lucky and eternally grateful to have been invited to GS5 by my long time friend and fishing buddy JWR. I feel like I've found my tribe. Now with the Albion Open added to the fun, man I am stoked beyond!

So we've got JWR, T-Dub and JR's brother Brian. We named our crew "Team Something" our goal is for one day y'all will say "those guys are really something"! Stand by, we're in it to win it!

Look forward to the next meeting of the tribe. All the best, TIGHT LINES AND BIG FISH!

Thank you once again Craig and Linelle for all your hard work making Albion a great success. Congrats Scott on taking first place and also to Ryan and Roger
for second and third. I did OK in terms of catching some fish but none were contenders so I didn't even bother weighing any of them. My family enjoyed their
weekend so much that they all ask when is the next get together will be. :smt001
Thanks to all who came and welcomed my family and shared food with us all. The
high light of the weekend for my mom, sisters, and cousins was the Uni fest they
had provided by Harold and Nate. Thanks fellas, I totally appreciate that. Also the
Sunday night when everyone came with their dish to share and gathered around
the campfire to relax. Looking forward to the next event.

What a great event. Thanks Craig and Linelle.  Personal thanks to Ryan (Team Chancho) for the spare pan fryers from Friday’s trip and for being part of our National Guard. Naoaki for his company Friday and OTW Saturday. Kanpai !  Racinrob for fishing and OTW troubleshooting of my FF on Sunday. Rich / MontanaN8V for Fridays trip and campfire songs in questionable taste, and Fishin Jay and Theresa for just being good folks

Arrived Thursday, & chilled. Friday on Rich’s trip for one China and an underling. Note to self –On a small party boat in ten foot seas, with big cross chop, try to fish the stern not the bow. Saturday, fished near the bouy for a Ling etc and then on the south side of the cove for some rockies and a big Grass Cod. Sunday under near perfect conditions, I started out fishing with Rich & Shilo. Caught and released too many small blues, so I headed north looking for that big Red. Joined up with RacinRob and watched him catch several legal  Lings. Caught that big Verm I was looking for. Yea !  Monday went south and caught a mixed bag with a couple big Cabs. Headed in early when the wind picked up. Tuesday chilled, played tourist, checked out Van Damme and Russian Gulch camp grounds. Gotta fish Russian Gulch next time. Beautiful place and an easy launch. Driving  home we stopped in Petaluma for dinner. The wife said, doesn’t Craig live here? Maybe we should call him and ask where a good place to eat is.. We didn’t call and we took an exit hoping to run across Mary’s Pizza. The only place I know in Petaluma. We came to an intersection and some crazy person pulled up alongside and started honking his horn at us. It was Craig ! We told him we were looking for a good place to eat. He said, right here, they have great BBQ. I look to my right and there is Lombardi’s BBQ. Ten feet later we turn into Lombardi’s. Excellent BBQ.  Thanks Craig

Many thanks Craig and Linelle for another colossal event. Pam enjoys camping and dinning with the NorCalYakAnglers so I couldn't be more pleased. I know Sonny was thrilled it occurred on his birthday to get him the day off work. Harvested three crab on Thursday and four Friday. On Sat one boated a 25 inch ling really early then nothing more worth keeping. On the way in we pulled the crab traps. Then prior to the feast Pam and me did a honeymoon river cruise (no way a divorce boat), life is good.

darn...hobiedave beat me to the punch... I didnt want to be the latest slacker...but its been a week since week started this endeavor..

Beer N Fish Martin picked me up Thursday morning and we rendevoused with Hobiedave enroute to the Boonville Brewery for our roadtrip kickoff.. met cameron and Ian and a couple other guys there for some pre-festivity celebrations.
The drive goes so much better and faster when amonst friends.. I was getting giddy with excitment..kind of like when my kids get into the parking lot of Disneyland... well this and GS5 are daddy's Disney trip.

Got a lot of fishing and crabbing in over the 3 days.
THursday we made the discovery that crab traps are not allowed in the river...thanks rich for passing on that negative experience with F&g.

Friday morning launched early in the morning with Hobiedave, Martin, HamachiJohn..It was the Hobie navy..when we exited the jaws we were met with pretty nasty mixed swells and general mayhem.  I wanted so bad to troll but decided to ducked into the North side of the cove. picked up a ling that fell short then started to get into some greenlings...

went back for lunch and then decided to go out again  for the daily double...scouted out the south side of the cove this time and by the afternoon the swells were laying down so I decided to map out the area for Saturdays contest..

true to form I remained on the water...each day...even on Saturday... I decided to pass up the weigh in since I never connected with anything of measuring size.  It seemed I was C&r ing the same damn gofer over and over...I couldn't find a Ling that day which really perplexed me...

but the serenity of the area was too alluring for me to call it early... only the prospect of good chow with friends drew me back to the campsite. Friday nite we munched on some crab and dodger dogs, couple with a mean mustard Martin picked up from Boontville brewery..

really enjoyed the comraderie and bonding.. always impressed watching Cameron whip up his creations.. Thanks for bringing all your gear and letting me grill up my sirloins for potluck..

But absent of my afternoon siestas..I was pretty beat each nite and couldn't rally to rage even though the partying sounded fun...

Thanks Craig and Linelle and everyone else who so generously contributed food, drinks and time to make this event such a positive experience for all of us..

Cheers everyone

Thanks for all of the kind words, pictures and videos. Always a humbling experience to fish with so many talented anglers. Man, if I knew my acceptance speech was going to end up on you tube I would have prepared something more profound.  :smt005 Thanks also for the moment of silence for my friend Aaron.

I forgot to mention how good the food was. I ate a cheese burger and fries around 2 PM and really wasn't that hungry when the potluck started. I did try the fried fish and whoever made the English style fish should challenge Chuck to a throwdown. It was really good. Sat next to Sonny at the first table and tried the micro brews and watched the line of people get longer and longer. I don't know how many people were there but well over 200. Then the Jedmo Nation dropped the full spread of Asian delights right in front of Sonny and I. You know what they say, location, location, location.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 Had to eat some more.  :fat

I can't add more to what has already been said except +1 to everything! Theresa and I had an amazing time reconnecting with our NCKA brothers. We miss you all!  :smt006

We've decided that although we probably can't make this an annual pilgrimage, we will definitely be making it down at least every couple years. But that doesn't mean you can't come see us!  :smt002 Consider this an open invite to any NCKA member to spend a little time visiting north Idaho.

Special thanks to Craig and Linnelle for putting on the event and to Craig especially for calling me up last winter and putting the suggestion in my head that we should drive down for Albion. Also, thank you to the Jedmo Nation for their hospitality. You guys rock! And finally, thanks to all my old NCKA friends that made the trip so much fun. I can't possibly name you all but you know who you are. Kayak fishing is fun, but it's the people of NCKA that make these events so special to me.

I know I'm a lagger, but I have tried numerous times to post with pictures and each time it has failed; so I go them up on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2059682185592.110269.1650795047 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2059682185592.110269.1650795047)

Just wanted to echo the sentiments expressed towards Craig and Linelle, you two did a fabulous job! Both the wife and I had a great time over the weekend; from the journey to Albion with Rey, Patty and Mooch, all the way to the Sunday night potluck at Jedmo Nation (except that 'fear-factor' balut eating thang, yuk).  The potluck spread was off the hook, with a wide assortment of dishes. Congrats to all the tourny and raffles winners; so I miss the awards, somebody forgot to wake me up... :smt044

I look forward to next years event; where I'm pretty sure I will be well versed of the DFG size limit regs... :smt009 :smt009

See you all soon!
