I know one day I'll be so stoked to GS...alls I know is I "told" my wife I hope I can pull off a 9/14 event and she recognized it as a go...Simply Fishing is on the books and I may have persuade a Cove future event, it may take time but I think it's a bucket list kinda thing for me...thanks for all the posts and pics... :smt006

Thanks for doing this Amos!!
Yea, Eddie!!!!
-
excellent
-
Amos this is great that you are taking over. Ruben and of course all of the other involved people always made it a fun event. With my new schedule I will be able to make it!

Interesting. May I ask what prompted the change?

That’s too bad. I wanted to do them both.

The purity of paddling is a joy to both Ruben and I but he has doubled down as the North American importer of high performance Stealth paddle yaks whereas I went to the Hobie Mirage Outback this year which is beautifully efficient, if not so elegant . Disallowing sonar and providing all tournament terminal tackle levels the playing field and makes this tournament one beginners should find Non-threatening and supportive. There are enough things to command ones attention while building saltwater kayaking skills without worrying about having more, newer, and costlier gear in order to keep up. I am happy to maintain that spirit but didn’t want to exclude Hobie or other pedal driven craft. Three reasons behind it 1. I embraced pedaling myself 2. Pedal kayakers don’t necessarily have paddle craft lying around and want to participate 3. I recognize that their may be paddlers who consider it special to compete, only against other paddle boats so the paddle only division...but anyone may compete in the open division as long as they are human or sail powered.
Yes there is another event four and half hours away, the overlap was unintentional, one of the Saturdays in mid September is this events customary date. C’est la vie

I did buy a little sail for my kraken...are you saying it is allowable this round? :smt006

Too bad about the overlap. :smt011

It sucks this conflicts with our local event at the Cove cuz that's where my support will be and probably every other Humboldt member

Ahhh it’s not so “Simple” this year :smt003. I loved when this event started out it was very unique for kayak tournaments. I’ll be there in my Hobie keeping it simple paddling and using the handline.

Awesome Amos. Glad to see you guys passing the work around supporting each other. Only good things can happen.
Going to be a good one!

I thought it was more like the third weekend in September usually. I looked up the past dates in the Fishing Tournaments and Events category. I didn't remember the 2013 date nor that it was in November.
2013 - 11/9
2014 - 9/27
2015 - 9/26
2016 - 9/24
2017 - 9/23

So people can't paddle Hobies is what I am reading. To bad you are allowing people to use peddle power, it takes away the Simply part. But hey, it's your rodeo and I only come to hang with my NCKA family and get hammered.
-
C’est la vie
I don’t see a whole lot of a sense of community in this post. Saying it’s 4.5 hours is pretty disingenuous. This whole thing stinks. I like both you guys and I like both events but this stinks. Move simply back a week and don’t cannibalize another tournament. People have gone to great lengths in the past to avoid conflict with other tournaments. Amos, you need to be called out on this one.
J’accuse...!
-
Its not easy to host one of these events. Simply Fishing has a 6-year history and is an awesome & unique event. Open Shelter has a special purpose and a super worthy beneficiary this year. Bummer that they’re both on the same day, but that’s no reason to bash one or the other.
-
Please,
Let's not get too upset and start throwing accusations around, I'm sure the organizers had good cause for changing their usual date. I'm not mad, just a little frustrated at the outcome. Either way, I'm sure all will have a great time at either event, simply choose the event that fits you best.
I wish the organizer of the conflicting event a huge success and applaud all the efforts they put into it.
-
Hey Amos whats up--saw your gonna fish..what day?...hows putting events together working out? Bet its fun...anyways lets fish..We still got our 3 lure tupperware kits unused :smt044 :smt044
peace bro
-
I demand that taco Tuesday to be moved to Thursday because it conflicts with teriyaki Tuesday!
So you gotta choose between two sweet events. So what? Events are put on by event organizers, who have lives and jobs outside of kayak fishing. If this is the date that works for Amos, then he should do it on that date. We should all be glad that there are guys like Amos and Eric who are willing to organize events for this sorry group of sad sacks.
-
Holy Shit! No good deed goes unpunished I guess.
For my part I wanna send out a HUGE THANK YOU TO SUPERVATO FOR TAKING OVER AND NOT LETTING THIS TOURNAMENT DIE. I also want to thank him for being inclusive and figuring out a way for all the folks who have lamented their inability to participate (due to the paddle only format) to be able to join the fun. Amos, keep your head up and keep moving forward. You are one of the most considerate, generous and thoughtful men I know. And I'm sure you will do your level best to serve our kayak fishing community in good faith and with honor. I have complete confidence that the tournament could not be in better hands. Sorry I dropped this on you last minute like this.

Amos, love ya brother!

I am glad you are having it a couple weeks earlier. Finally it’s not on deer season opening morning. Great move!!!!! :smt002
-
Amos! So great to see you on the water yesterday...did you geetum? :smt006
-
We all love you Amos! Oh well I'm sure everything will be fine. It is sad that both were scheduled on the same day but i guess shit happens. I hope everything works for both events even though both will be a little impacted.
-
Glad to see this event is still happening.Thank you Amos for taking it over and thank you Ruben for all the work you have put in. Running an event is not easy, people will always be unhappy.
With the growth of the sport, there will be more and more events. It used to be that NCKA was the only place to post events, but there are now other groups online that use different platforms such as facebook.
I am sad to see how everyone can be so negative. There is a difference between being unhappy with something and taking it out on a NCKA member who has been nothing but a positive part of this group.
Yes, it's a bummer that there are two great events on the same day, but choose the one that you really can't miss.
-
Hopefully next year there will be an agreement not to have them on the same date. :smt008
-
If I remember correctly, Ruben's raffles supported people or other worthy groups in need. He has always been very generous.
Maybe this year the Simply raffle (if there is one) should support the Shelter Cove Fishing Preservation Inc.
SCFPI is a very worthy cause.
Think about it...

Boy howdy, a lot of armchair QB here.
Are the folks asking for a date change or simply complaining going to reprint material, communicate with sponsors, make sure other calendars are clear, put together volunteers, etc...
There is a lot in planning and coordination that goes into hosting an event, moaning about how you cant have everything you want and be in both places because someone is ruining your special fun thats got the exclusive paddle only vibe by having an overlapping date... is this really what NCKA is about?
for my part
I'll do my best to make it to Simply and wish I could do Shelter Open, but really, how many times can I afford the time and $$ to drive to Shelter every year? oah yeah, once...

Thats awesome.
If that's the case and was the intention from the beginning , I'm willing to eat crow .
If it was the intention from the beginning, it should have been stated at the start. Might have relieved some of the friction on this topic.

Not my circus, not my monkeys.
My post was just a friendly suggestion. :smt006
Al
I think that it was a good suggestion, Al.
I also think that this isn’t a zero sum game. There is opportunity for everyone to win here, since net participation in both events will be greater than participation in a single event. Doug thinks it’s disingenuous to note that Shelter cove is a 4.5 hour drive from the Simply Fishing location. I don’t think it’s disingenuous to note it since it certainly impacts my participation in OS (I don’t go because it’s too far during a busy part of the year) and probably the participation of lots of people who live south of Humboldt county.
Perhaps instead of jumping Amos’s shit, you could have worked with him to find a mutually beneficial solution. He’s a super nice guy if you give him the chance.
-
Look at it this way...
Which ever one you choose , your odds just went up that you might win it!

Ocean Cove is a LARGE campground so space shouldn’t be an issue but why not get your reservations now :smt023

Maybe you sent it to the campground? My home address is 308 Harvest Ln., Santa Rosa, CA 95401. And I have not had to return anyone’s registration except one to have the check signed.
It’s probably worth noting at this time that camping and any campground fees are not included in registration and are the responsibly of the angler.

So I guess the rules are still the same as past years but for the peddle allowed now.....my dilemma at this point is the use of only the tackle issued. Can anyone tell me the type of gear? What I mean is....I don’t fish with 6 oz on shrimp flies with a pool cue rod and 80 lb line. Not bagging on that but I just don’t enjoy it. I basically use heavy bass gear, 1 oz jig heads on 15 lb line.
The trip sounds like lots of fun and I’m really interested in making this my first group event, but want to make sure I have the gear ( appropriate rod and reel).
Anyway, thanks for any info, so I can get my form in on time.

From years past, I don't recall the weights ever being heavier than 6oz... and I thought they were usually around 4oz and less.

You fish with the jigs given to you...until you lose them...if you're competing.

Always fun at this tournament, sometimes frustrating. Last year I thought I caught a large Ling pulling me around for some time. It turned to be a seal, had it in his mouth. Good times. What

I realize this may be a tough thread to gather information as it wandered off course for a while ... The event was founded on the idea of simplicity, without the aid(distraction) of fish finders on a level playing field with anglers fishing identical tournament supplied lures. The lures supplied will be excellent, one may be your favorite, another less so. Honestly they are all pretty dynamite and any one could catch the winning fish which will be the heaviest lingcod. All coast guard rules apply and anglers should be aware of local CDFW closed zones. Check in will start at 5:30am at the top of the launch ramp with hull inspections don’t bring outside tackle except snaps, swivels one rod and reel with you to launch if you plan to fish competitively. If you lose your tournament provided tackle and wish to continue fishing check in and head back out. The tournament tackle could be plenty for a couple of days fishing sessions or you may lose it before you catch the winning fish, it’s part of the game. Competitors need to be in the weigh- in line by 230 . Dress for immersion and have a marine radio. Potluck should be underway by 430 Bring a dish to share that reflects the size of your group there is always abundance but don’t be “that guy”. Raffle will benefit charity TBA. Register by August 31 to be guaranteed a T-shirt . Neither camping nor any other campground or launch fee included in tournament registration. Tournament director is final arbitrator of grey areas and decisions regarding competitive issues. Good Vibes Only!
Thank you, Amos 👍🏽
Dang that was hard to read and I wrote it 🤣. Hope it answers some questions.

Yes, Justin you just made it! Bringing the signed waiver will save you from having to sign one at launch. A big thank you to those of you who bothered to figure out the waiver download and t-shirt order. Next year I will figure out how to include them both in the Eventbrite ticketing process.

I'll be there Thursday thru Sunday and plan to fish on Friday. I'll be throwing flies though, still looking for a ling on the fly.

I'm looking at Thursday arrival as well. Haven't fished the ocean (or at all for that matter) in a while so I need some extra time OTW.
-
Hey Scott,
I hope to meet you there. I throw line as well but yet to in the salt. I got an old able broom stick 10wt. I've been meaning to try with a shooting head system currently I've only got an I line on it. I've still got to set it up what size head (assuming your using that) do you shoot leviathan? I mainly play with my 6-8wts off the beach for perch and strippers.

I will be throwing roughly 25-30 feet of T-20 on a 9 weight. I'll be throwing the fly all day Friday, but conventional gear for Saturday. I'll be in a green OK Trident 13.

Unless something comes up I plan to be there Thursday afternoon to fish pre-Friday so I at least have a feel for the area having never been there. This is my first NCKA event and look forward to meeting all of you. I’m in an older 14ft pro-angler. See you all there.

There is usually a post about the potluck, it will probably be posted tonight or tomorrow. Just bring something to share and your own plates and silverware is usually a good idea. People bring all kinds of things, I love the traditional made foods. Bring a chair also! Your coming to a great fun event.

Raydon, lemme know tomorrow if you still need transport. I have room for another heavy-ass Hobie and likely have to make a detour through the East Bay anyway.

Potluck, raffle and awards will be in Group Site #1 near the store first site in the campground on the south side of the road beginning about an hour or 90 minutes after final weigh in to give people time to shower, clean their fish, etc. Badger Ranch is doing a box baked hog, but let’s not count on that for all our protein with a group of over 120 Tournament will provide paper bowls and plates even though we like to minimize waste. I’m sure there will be some cold beer around. Bring a dish reflective of the size of your group, plan on spending the night and don’t drink and drive. If all else fails fill up on dessert.

Reminder these are your lures to be obtained from me Friday Afternoon/ Evening or Saturday morning and provided by Outdoor ProShop. No fishfinders, scents, bait, or sharing of lures. All anglers are given identical tackle. Leader material, swivels and snaps are okay. Deadeye jig will be a different color due to the overwhelming success of the tournament the demand exceeded availability for the one pictured.
Heaviest single lingcod wins! Good vibes only. Know your CDW regulations. Stay out of closed areas and know where they are. Tournament director reserves the right to make final competitive decisions. 🤙🏽 Sorry for not unifying all three posts please see the posts preceding this for important information

Thanks Amos! So are peddles still okay? No FF & GPS, but radio okay alright!?

I can hardly wait!

Nice. Do we get a weight for the one without any weight? Most likely most will fish illegal using 3 hooks using that as a leader.
-
Amos will be checking your kayak before you all make your way down the ramp. I volunteered to pat down and search everyone for any illegally tackle they may be carrying on their person. actually I did not volunteer, I paid Amos a fee for this privilege. Bringing boxes of gloves and lube.

Simply Six was a huge success! So many people contributed in so many ways that it is more than I can do here to thank them all. A couple of the biggest fish were Tommy Welborn’s winning 21.49 pound Lingcod and Napa Justin’s donkey 25.5” Vermillion Rockfish! Old Town Topwater 120 PDL from Kayak City was won by new dad Texasboy Eric Roberts. Photos and fish stories to come soon, I’m sure. Let’s do Simply Seven.
Thank you, Amos

Thank You Amos .
Job well done. Thanks to your family as well and everyone who helped out.
Congrats to the winners. And A big thanks to all the sponsors.
Simply seven for sure.

Great Job Amos on taking over and keeping the SimplyFishingTourny going and Alive. I'm so glad I attended. Caught a few fish including my first yelloweye but the highlight for me was the awesome weather and seeing all my buds and meeting some new. Great Event and looking forward to next years

This was my first ever NCKA event and it was great! I didn’t feel that good Saturday so I wasn’t real social and I apologize for that. However, those I did meet you made me feel welcome and I appreciate it.
My “boat” of a PA 14 isn’t what I’d recommend for that ramp so if I’m able to make it next year I may have to go with a more manageable yak. At any rate, we’ll put on event and thank you.

A last call for tournament T-shirts for those of you who registered by the deadline and didn’t get your T-shirt. They won’t be shipped but if you registered in time and are due a T-shirt shoot me a PM about NCKA express and will make it happen before I have to start selling and donating my extras. No guarantees after Halloween.
yours, Amos
