Title: SIMPLY FISHING New Twist pg 20
Post by: fishkraft on March 27, 2016, 09:38:21 AM
I have had several questions about immersion gear, radios etc. so I want to be perfectly clear about this... You are all responsible for your own safety. This is a dangerous sport and you must be appropriately prepared for any situation.

ALL COAST GUARD SAFTEY REQUIREMENTS APPLY

Registration is still open but we are past the clothing deadline so you would not get a free t-shirt

All registrations must be completed by Sept. 7th at midnight to receive a tournament t-shirt.
All clothing orders must also be completed by Sept. 7th at midnight.

REGISTRATION IS STILL OPEN.
We are past the clothing deadline so no t-shirt, sorry

http://www.eventzilla.net/web/event/simply-fishing-tournament-2016-2138880967

The theme of the tournament is simplicity... old school kayak fishing. Nothin' fancy, just the angler and his/her gear, testing their skills.

To that end I am gonna level the playing field by limiting each angler to one rod and reel and four lures (provided), everybody fishes the same lures, no bait, no scents.  No mechanized propulsion systems, no sails, no fish finders, no GPS, just a kayak, a paddle, a fishing rod, landing gear and safety equipment. This years raffle will benefit our own Amos Foreman. As many of you already know SuperVato aka Amos was injured a few months ago by a falling I-beam. Those of you who know will surely know that Amos is pretty tough and not likely to feel sorry for himself. As such it may not be apparent that he has been unable to work since the injury. After a bit of arm twisting he agreed to be the raffle beneficiary on the condition that he not "profit" from it, i.e., he will only accept enough to replace what he has actually lost. Of course I agreed and I asked him to chose a charity to receive any overage. He has chosen the Brain Injury Network. The Brain Injury Network (BIN) is the first brain-injury-survivor-operated, international and USA national, Survivor of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), nonprofit, advocacy organization. (Founded 1998.) This nonprofit organization is for and by the brain injury survivor community.

Feel free to PM me or post on this thread if you have something you'd like to donate to the raffle.

Woohoo! Once again The Headwaters Kayak Shop has stepped up as the headlining sponsor
and once again they are keeping it simple buy offering a
$500 cash prize for the heaviest lingcod.

YeeeHaaaw! our favorite lure sponsors from previous years have agreed to support our tournament yet again.

So let's hear it for LaWanna and Kelly Schulz of

And you guessed it our very own Andres Davis/Andy1976 will be providing the irons

And...

Tournament central is at group site one just like last year. Camping is $26 per night, per vehicle, but unfortunately they do not take reservations for individual campsites. If you can put together a group they may have other group sites available to reserve. The cost of the group site is $520 for two nights for up to 10 vehicles, additional vehicles are $26 per night, per vehicle. Their telephone number is 707-847-3422

I haven't done the ocean yet....How's Ocean Cove for a beginner?  (13.5' Precision Search)

Was thinking of joining this outing as there would be plenty of witnesses to tell the Coast Guard where to look.

They have a loose system. They don't have sites numbers. Last year the campground was full when I showed up for simply fishing but they said it was very unusual to be full that time of year. I think they had more than one group event at the same time. You could call to see if they expect it to be crowded or not. The earlier you arrive the better your chances.

" This years raffle will benefit our own Amos Foreman. (Founded 1998.) This nonprofit organization is for and by the brain injury survivor community."

RIGHT ON !!!

Hell yeah!!

Great job Ruben!!

The A-Hulls have a pretty cool prize to donate/pay forward to the raffle.

 :smt008

Really hope I can make it up there this year!!!

Jim

The guys at OC seen to like NCKA, I asked if I could drop off my trailer a week in advance and they said "absolutely!". The storage fee for a month might be step, but I'll give them 60 bucks for the week if I don't have to pull it home to sac and back the following weekend :)

It's getting close and I can't wait to come in early with no lures!

I'd be in that week. C'mon man who holds a fishing tourney on the opening day of deer season. next year please remember that there is a magic " open " weekend between the close of archery and the open of rifle that would be PERFECT to hold this tourney on. If I can fill my tag though next weekend I hope to be there. What is the cap on entries?

As far as Cap goes, I have raised it this year to 150 but if you register after Sept 3rd. you may have to settle for a large t-shirt as production needs to start by then.

The Outback paddles ok. Just put the plug into the drive well.  You don't have to paddle far to get on the fish at Ocean Cove.  You can get pointers on paddling technique from YouTube and/or from the folks at the launch. Just do it!

I do not see my name on the Roll call sheet. Just want to make sure you received my money for tourney, hoodie, hat.PayPal about 1-2 weeks ago.  This will be my first Kayak tourney, don't want to miss it sounds like a lot of fun. If I can bring anything let me know.

Thanks

I called the campground today to see if overflow parking would be available for those who plan on sleeping in their trucks. She kind of dodged the question but stated that there is 115 additional campsites if the group camping is full. I will arrive very early Friday to get a spot. If someone wants to join at my spot (If I get one), look for white Chevy Silverado with campershell with big American flag.

My understanding is as long as you bring food and beer you can just show up the morning of and fish with everybody. You may not get the lure package or be entered in the competition, but you will be welcome to join in the fun.

I just got my kayak this past weekend.  So, now I can stop lurking and start kayaking with you guys.

So, I understand that shirt is out of the question.

But how is the camp site situation?
Do I just contact the camp ground and ask for a single site?
I suppose if camp sites are full, I could spend a night in my minivan as well.

As you can tell, I am completely new to this whole NCKA meetup.
And quite psyched!

Campsites are first come first served, so just show up. Normally they don't sell out this time of year. Worst case scenario, there are other places to camp fairly close to Ocean Cove or make a day trip out of it.

And the good news keeps coming... Our own Rider/James after working with his new rod sponsor discovered that because of their internal paperwork it would take too long to process a rod donation for this years tournament. So what does he do? Donates one of his own Pro Staff rods, dude, my hat is off to you.  It's a Carrot Stix spinning jigging rod valued at $189.99. Let's hear it for James and Carrot Stix. You guys are awesome!

Volunteers needed

3 people to do kayak inspections at the launch area on tournament morning.
1 or 2 people to handle finding and setting up kids play area at tourney central, normal kids outdoor games like ring toss, bean bag toss, water balloons (if it's warm), hula hoops, badminton, lawn darts, beer pong....
1 person to bring hella donuts for launch check-in.
2 people to handle excess trash removal to dumpster post pot-luck.

ruben

I'll volunteer, just stick me wherever

With the lawn darts?  (Weren't those taken off the market years ago?)

So far several people have asked. The group wants to get their gear set up before we decide if there is more room. I don't know if it will be all small cars and tents or several RVs and trailers. The campground thinks they will have enough spaces. If they fill up, I imagine the group will do what it can to make room where they can. Hope to see everyone there!  :smt006

So I just cleared my calendar and registered.
I'll be coming up after work on Friday... from San Jose area... so I'm guessing quite late on Friday night. 10-11PM-ish?
Will there be someone at the camp site office that late?
I suppose as previously discussed, I could just crash in my minivan for a night.

I look forward to meeting you all.

http://www.oceancove.org/campground.html

Twenty acres of campground directly on the Pacific Ocean. Pick an oceanfront location or one secluded in the trees a bit back from the bluff. There are over one hundred available campsites to choose from. Picnic tables, fire pits, water, hot showers, chemical toilets, and a boat ramp. Group camping is available.

Four open air stalls, 8 quarters for about 5 minutes.  Water temperature borderline hot.  The middle two stalls share a floor drain, which can get disgusting when it drains slowly.  Best early morning or late late night.

He had it for some years and I (Craig) bought it from him two years ago. It has mostly been stored it's entire life. Very gently used. Some scratches from moving the kayak. Perfect shape. 16 ft. Around 58 lbs. I would say. Perfect for day trips. Lots of storage. Really fast." Sounds like a hell of a kayak. I can't believe someone one is going to win this on Saturday. Thanks Craig

After walking away from my computer, I think I may have answered my own question; it might be pointless to have a livewell if I can't use a sabiki to catch bait, nor bait rigs, right?

I suppose I'm asking for the hypothetical situation where I'm planning on catching mackerel on one of the rigs provided and then rigging them to the same lure just for the sake of adding insult to injury.

I believe Simply means fishing only with the lures given to you with no other assistance which would include any other hooks and electrical devices which would give you an advantage.

HoJo is correct, Seabird.  The rules are as follows... You may only use one rod and reel and the lures provided. You may not use any bait, scents or mechanized propulsion system, no sails, no sonar or GPS. Making bait would fall under the no bait clause, sorry. Not sure what happened but I must have deleted the format when posting an update. I'll repost it on page 1 now.

INTERESTING NEW TWIST!

This falls under the adapt and improvise philosophy...

Due to a misunderstanding between Mike and myself the BransonBaits tournament slugs were made in a variety of colors. Since the idea of the tournament is to not allow anyone a specific advantage. The slugs will be handed out randomly without regard to color. BUT, and heres the interesting part... You can trade slugs with another angler if you/they so desire.

If you catch a true hitch hiker it's fine. If you see a fish on your hook and send it back down its baiting. Baiting is not allowed.

Good questions... Keep 'em coming.

You better define "true hitchhiker". I get it, but some may not.

I will give it shot.

I feel a small fish on my line and leave it down, even though I have not reeled it in yet. I know it is there, but say to myself, why not leave it on just in case. I never "saw" it. This is baiting.

I am reeling in a fish that I just hooked and as I fight it to the surface the rod gets heavier and I discover that on the way up a big ling latched on to my smaller any species fish. This is a hitchhiker.

This is going to be an integrity issue. For the sake of making this a fair and fun tournament like it has been these last few years, DON"T try to get away with something just to win. Ask yourself how you would feel if you tried as hard as you could to win, you catch a 35" 15lb ling that should win the tourney, but lose because someone cheated.

Hope this helps. If I a wrong in your personal definition Ruben I will delete this post.

Have fun y'all.

Looking like I will have to work Saturday. Any chance I could get someone from sac area pick up my shirt and bag please and bring them back this way. Let me know so I can arrange it with Ruben please. Good luck all and be safe

I'll pick up your stuff if you haven't already arranged it with someone else.

You'll just have to come down to Rancho to get it :)

tough call to make, but i have decided not to fish this tourney as ill be physically unable to do so.  but ill be there for at least the potluck, raffle, and awards ceremony.  there's chance i might arrive Friday night to hang out, if its the case, ruben, i can volunteer with whatever we need to do as far as inspections, etc.

really wish i could fish, as its my favorite tournamenr, but my well being is a lot more important than this.  i guess the fish will live another day with out me on the water.

hope to see new and familar faces there! cheers!

Ok I've got the dumb dumb question of the day   :smt006

Random selection of 4 baits.  Do I need to go find the jigs to put them on?  Currently I gotta Nadda.

It is going to be blowing pretty strong the day of the tournament, 7-12 mph. Is this going to deter the tournament or people from going out if it is looks to rough? I've never been there so I don't know what to expect. My dad's already there and says it is going to be tough on the water, not that I'm having second thoughts. Just wanna be prepared for strong wind.

We getting a jig head for the bighammer and another for the Branson bait? Or one to use between them?

Thanks rockfish. Tommy (Butete) is planning on grabbing my stuff but if he forgets or doesn't make it please grab it for me. I also plan on having a crap ton of raffle winnings as I Pay Palled in some funds to get me some raffle tickets. I'm hoping I get a call Saturday afternoon that I need to leave work and come pick up a kayak !!  Anyways rockfish thank you and please grab anything if needed. But pretty much anyone who brings back anything of mine will earn free jigheads  :smt001

No, when you check in the morning of the tournament I will provide you with your four lures (plus a bonus lure) . Please read page 1 of this thread so that you are familiar with the other specifics regarding the format.

7-12 is not bad at all. The swells may be up. That just makes it easier to jig. If you feel uncomfortable on the water for any reason just go in and be safe.

You do get a camp site with it. They just don't allow us to bring in 3-4 cars and split the cost.

I just gave the campground a phone call.
And they are saying that it's pretty packed... and might be full tonight.

:(

I'll be coming up late... after work.
I hope to find a spot... pitch up my tent...  (quietly)
and get some rest for tomorrow.

The guy actually said I might be better off driving up in the morning...
But I would really like to get some sleep before heading out on my kayak.

Can someone update me when they get there if there is a spot for my truck and a tent. It will just be Ari (my daughter) and I. We may try and carpool up if it's tight.

Ok......I just got home and realized I don't have my paddle. Had problems with the kids from the group site next to us and think they did something with it. They took my fishing pole and flag and had put them in the trees. If anyone found a yellow/black two piece paddle please let me know.

Good vibes ruled at Simply Fishing 4. The NCKA ethos of helping, sharing, fun, and friendship was on full display. The graciousness of so many individuals and event sponsors was amazing. Camping was comfy and the weather was insane. I'm now home grateful and revitalized. Ruben/Jennifer and event volunteers including kids Emma, Miles, Paloma, Ari, and Jolie worked very hard, thank you.
     In gratitude, Amos

Yeah we got a nice ling and a nice cabbie.  I was pretty jealous of all you floating by on your yaks, but we pulled out a couple nice fish that made it worth it.

I finally have all my safety gear and have practiced my self rescues, so I won't be fishing from the rocks much longer  :smt003 :smt005

I had a great time. Fish tacos were great as always. Conditions on the water were a little sketchy. I was glad to be in the Wilderness Thresher 140 Rob loaned me. I like it so much I'm getting one of my own. It really is nice feeling stable when things get bumpy. I was able to get a decent Verm and ling on tournament day. One for the taco shack and one to take home. Ling Cod with salt and pepper and fried in butter is simple and so good. I had fun hanging out around the fire and sharing the brotherhood. I'm already looking forward to next year! :smt006

Hey, what a great time I had at Ocean Cove. Saw some peeps I met B 4 and met some new ones. Ocean Cove was a bit more rocky on the water than I am used to, but I didn't end up in the drink [cough! cough!]. I caught a few rockies (including a China cod), and some small blues, but nothing really noteworthy. Thanks for your acceptance and comraderie!

Here's some random pics that I shot over a 2 day period.
