Way to go.  In the mean time I spent the entire season waiting for rain, or the fish to show up, or almost anything to happen.  Not one sign, so I missed another year.  Maybe the fall will be more giving.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak stabilizers

I've made the stablizers already.  Used 4 inch pvc.  Didn't like the angle so I added a 45 degree fitting to raise the angle.

Ok, so the board has talked me into going for crabs in the ocean.  My last time in  bay SF Bay I forgot I was in a kayak  (I'm a senior) and leaned over to grab something behind me and had to tread water.  Leaned too far.  Took awhile to right the kayak and get back in.  So I just made some nice stabilizers out of pvc for my kayak.
My question-- I assume that I should set them to ride just above the water so I can paddle the kayak cleanly, or should they ride in the top inch or so.  I haven't set the final level yet with the pvc cement.  Your thoughts?  Just above the water or an inch or so below?
Thanks,

Thanks for the replies.  I'll be taking a rod with me.

I'll be driving down to Carmel for a few days next week and visiting the area from Monterey Bay to Big Sur.  I'm not lugging my kayak.  I've been there before and always thought about taking a rod.  Any suggestions?  Take a rod and fish from a beach or rocky area for stripers, perch, or kelp bass.  Leave the rod at home and just enjoy the area.

Thanks Loleta Erik.  I've never felt comfortable making the drive using guesswork.  This gives me something to look at.

I usually fish the Russian and Gualala, and if I feel energetic I'll drive to the Trinity or Klamath, but I've only fished the Eel once because its got suck a terrible reputation for being muddy after a storm and is so iffy for water conditions.  That being said I wonder if there is a cfs flow range that allows the river to be fishable?  Loleta Eric can you respond to this?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Curing Coon Shrimp for Steelhead
« on: January 02, 2017, 10:52:32 AM »
Thanks 3$J,
I've cured eggs before, but I haven't been successful for the past few years getting them.  I like the idea of using medium shrimp and cutting them up.  On another board, one person uses the small bay shrimp.  I'm primarily interested in finding out if grass shrimp are feasible.  I've watched the you tube link you listed along with several others.

General Fishing Tips / Curing Coon Shrimp for Steelhead
« on: December 31, 2016, 09:36:56 AM »
I want to cure a batch of shrimp for steelhead. (called coon shrimp) It's difficult to find whole small shrimp in the SF bay area to use. I've been thinking of using grass shrimp. They are easy enough to get with a small gage trap and a little bait. Has anyone tried curing them for steelhead? If so what was the result in terms of toughness and effectiveness on steelhead?
Thanks,

Now that I'm a senior I find that I have a harder time motivating myself to load up my kayak and go over to Marin to fish for stripers.  The weather is hot, the TV is relaxing, and the refrigerator is close.  Is anyone doing anything, or should I continue my lazy ways.  Thanks for any motivation you can send my way.

I called King's in Guerneville and they said it take a week for the river to clear after the last of the rain yesterday.

It seems like I've been waiting for a couple of years to hear something positive about the Russian.  Thank you for taking the time to post and add pictures.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing Gloves
« on: November 29, 2015, 09:23:03 AM »
Beware,... for your consideration,
I will point out one problem I found with gloves.  I purchased some sweet neoprene gloves to use while steelhead fly fishing in N. California during the winter.  I'm not that big, 5'9" and 180 with fairly large hands.  I got a size large.  They fit in warm weather when I don't need them.  But when its really cold, my hands seem to increase in size.  I think I must be pumping more blood to my extremities to stay warm.  Anyway, when I really need them they are tight and uncomfortable.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Rusted hooks!!! How to Prevent?
« on: November 16, 2015, 04:50:42 PM »
Along that same line, after fishing the bay and other salt water areas I've been cleaning everything with a hose, but rust formed on the hooks.  Now I'm rinsing in water and then spraying with WD40.  What are other people doing for this problem?

Thanks for your responses.  This gives us some options.   After our trip yesterday we had a talk about old guys and time limits.  This should cut some of the time, and rowing our of our outings.  I forgot to mention in my report that the conditions were very good.  No wind and calm water.
