Title: Sablefish ?
Post by: mdoka_matt on July 05, 2015, 02:03:18 PM
I am unsure exactly what this fish is.  Caught from Capitola while trolling the upper water column. Looks like a Sablefish based on my research. What do the experts think?

They look like a sable fish to me.  They are usually a little bit darker color. They are one of the best tasting fish. I think it is even better than Chilean sea bass. Very bony though. So be careful.  Does anybody know how I can target sablefish? They are usually down deep and a little bit out of our reach.  When they have these in the Chinese restaurant, they are usually not listed on the menu. You have to ask for it.  Even then, you have to kind of know the waiter. They save these for their best customers.

Try eating it. If it's not amazing, it isn't sablefish.

Not hake. Look for the teeth bro. Ive caught hake out of Bodega in 275ft. Trolling for kings.

My Saltwater Inc buddy agrees that based on my (poor) pics, it appears to be a small blackcod/sablefish.  I have never seen one of them before.  Interestingly, I caught this one trolling at about 30 +/- feet deep in about 80 feet of water.  I figured they were more deep and offshore then that.

I should have added before; this specimen was only about 7".  About the same size as the mackerel which are currently inundating Monterey Bay.

Juvenille sablefish come into shallow water sometimes. I've caught em on sabikis off the wharf in Monterey. You can catch them out of Moss Landing in 400+ ft water pretty easily, if you have enough line haha.

I put it back because I didn't know what it was.  Looked like a nice ling bait though.
