I thought I was going to be limited to driving up Friday night and home on Sunday. I just put myself in for Friday and Monday off.  :smt007 Maybe I can sign up for the salmon trip I never got to take.

So check this out.  I'm on the board of Humboldt Area Saltwater Anglers - HASA.  I'm actually right near the end of a 2 year term and am trying to hook them up with another kayaker to take a board position.  Doug?  I think you'd be great in the role.

Anyway, last night we had a board meeting, and a big part of what we hear about throughout the year is about seasons - Pacific halibut, salmon, lingcod and rockfish...

Last night we got updates that included this potentially big one:  lingcod below the 40-10 line is likely to go to 1 per angler.  Not sure if that means this year or next, but something to think about.

Salmon is the update that I most anticipate.  So far the word on the street has good jack returns, so this year's season sounds promising.  Hopefully the Cove will have an early April opening again and will have a relatively full season with two Chinook per day, minimum 20".  We'll know more in the coming weeks, and I'll update this thread as it gets going.

The 40-10 line is a very important line in fisheries management.  It is simply 40 degrees 10 minutes North latitude, which lies about 5 miles north of Shelter Cove.

Great question, Jim.  It's at Horse Mountain, which is just a couple miles north of Shelter Cove.  The 1 lingcod limit would, I believe, affect all ports from Shelter Cove south.

Got it.

Will be interesting to see if that becomes reality.

I personally would be fine with it...3 seemed excessive to me, 2 is plenty, 1 would prolly make me be more selective...

I imagine for a lot of folks though they may take more RF if can only take 1 Ling...which seems kinda the opposite of what they have been trying to achieve over the past couple years...but I really have no clue.

I would be interested in hearing the thought process behind a one ling limit. I can't speak for the rest of the coast, but, here in the Cove, most anglers will catch 30-50 ling's for every limit of assorted R.F.
That sounds like either the ling population needs culling, or the R.F. population is in need of help.
Personally, I'm just glad to fish the few days I can lol!!!
Also happy to have Cali-Hali season remain the same.

It would suck if they imposed 1 ling limit. There are abundance at SC that require culling to help maintain the RF population and motivate Asian like myself to fish further  :smt044. I think in my opinion, they should implement tags on lings like they did on stripers before. For example the limit is 2 and if you purchase a tag, that will allow you to keep 3. Its better since not all wanted more than and some like myself can take that tag opportunity, Since the did a 3 limit 2 season ago to cull and help RF population. Its a win win, dfg gets extra fundings for those tags and at the same time help culling over populated lings that affects RF statistics.

Thanks for the information. When the limit was 3 Lingcod it did seem a little excessive. I would have no problem reducing the limit to 1. All it would mean is that people (me) would be more selective.
