Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Bodega Bay 10/16

Bodega Bay is a poor place to rockfish and deceptively dangerous, I don’t mean to dissuade you because of safety but it’s not safer than places further north that will fish much better.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: Simply Fishing 2020
« on: August 10, 2020, 08:23:57 AM »
After much consideration and worry the time to finally pull the plug on this year’s Simply has come. Sonoma County is currently on the Covid-19 watch list and despite different opinions on the reality of the threat and the need/ effectiveness of social distancing, medical professionals and contagious disease specialists warn against gatherings the size of ours.Furthermore the dangers of disregarding health directives has been displayed by those who have ignored warnings and gotten sick. All the other Northern California salt water kayak fishing Tournaments cancelled months ago and I was for some time optimistic that the spread would stop. But to me it appears that the threat will still be present next month and I am frankly disappointed by the degree to which people are mingling. It has been a tough year and we would have found the sharing of food and drink a welcome relief but my family and I find the risk unacceptable and won’t expose the community to an illness which could result in preventable, lonely, and horrific death. Not all will agree with this decision. I did weigh the importance of our event to people’s social and recreational desires and make this decision with a heavy heart. Thank you to our participants, partner businesses and supporters. See you in 2021, Amos

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Shimano Tekota: New vs Old
« on: June 02, 2020, 07:02:07 AM »
New tekota 300’s and 400’s LC’s have a thumb bar freespool the 400 LC with a power handle. Twenty pounds of drag on the 300. No plans to make them in a non LC from what I understand. Since I see Allen Tani’s opinion is one you value I might note that he recently called them(the new Tekotas) The only Shimanos in a long time  he didn’t think needed service before being used. I picked one up last Friday and fished it off Point Reyes. On a medium light travaia It’s going to be a great kayak combo, the things nearly as tiny as a a Diawa lexa  100. I think this is going to cut into the market share of the larger tekotas some. I could’ve gone either way on the power handler but for jigging I prefer the smallest real I can get away with if I’m going low profile

General Talk / Re: Covid-19: Back to work soon?

Let's face it, at one point whether things are under control or not, the cities, counties, states, and Country will open back up.

Would love to hear people opinion on this, probably a good idea not to linger on what had happened or what's going on currently.   I understand that this may be a hot topic and I guess anything goes.

I would like to hear about prevention/precaution steps that people will take.  Another good topic of discussion is impact of economy within 6-12 months of opening California (albeit maybe in stages).

My wife and I are developing a plan to re-open our restaurants to dine in customers. We are currently open for takeout and delivery, and have already implemented some COVID precautions. I’d be interested in other (thoughtful) ideas.

Our precautions include:

All staff masked all the time  (currently in place)
Take temp of all staff every morning (currently in place)
Phone/online payment only (will change when dine in is opened)
No customers allowed inside restaurant (will change when dine in is opened)
Increased paid sick leave for staff (in place)

Hand sanitizer at entrance/exit
Disposable menus
Dedicated gloved dish busser
Blocked off tables and booths to provide distance between patrons.
Signage
Good list and I have no doubt that you have a good grasp on the virus on how to properly handle the situation. I might suggest that you strongly encourage reservations and “sell it” as a more personal dining experience I think that paints it in a positive light and makes people feel lucky for the opportunity. And not really for scientific reasons but I have noticed people are much more comfortable being in the proximity of one another that dining requires if they can be outdoors, it may not be practical or even possible but I observe 10 people eating in the sunshine are a whole lot less suspicious of one another than 10 shut indoors. The reason I stress it be by reservation or arrangement is the entitlement that comes with doing whatever we want whenever want creates a situation that when we can’t do\get what we want we feel resentment, frustration  and are more apt to use bad judgment. Don’t forgo control in your effort to be gracious and make people happy.

Introductions / Re: Rockfish Opener Mendocino
« on: April 27, 2020, 08:37:26 AM »
We don’t have county license plates in the state of California. Also how many generations must one live in Mendocino county to truly be a local, surely more than one?

Introductions / Re: Hobie Kayak... advice?
« on: April 22, 2020, 10:22:15 AM »
Definitely get one new enough to have the dry seat. Buying a Hobie is a little bit like buying a Toyota truck in that they depreciate so slowly you have to consider buying a new one and taking the depreciation hit yourself IMO. The utility and efficiency of the outback is fantastic it’s a very different experience than the ocean kayak. Less graceful but the mirage drive more than makes up for it. A like new demo or boat show display model from a reputable dealer might be your best bet. The 2019 really is a redesign so if you want those features like I did don’t get one older than that. The fact the guy says it’s new and 25% off is a bit of a red flag for me. I had typed out a longer response before my iPad battery died I hope this is helpful
