Ooh... Doran was where I was planning to go till the rain and wind scared me off. Thanks for the report. I don't feel so bad now.

Given the controversy, i'm interested to know what method is used to sample King Crab (and maybe Dungeness too) in order to set fishing quotas and season length. I'm sure there is a technical report out there that describes the method, but its swamped by garbage on the internet.  There are experts in this group that can probably advise.
Is it some version of mark and recapture studies?

I had the foolish idea that I could raise California quail in my yard and tame them down.
Wrongo.
I bought a couple pairs from a local guy. We approached his backyard aviary  from about 100 yards away and they went ballistic as soon as they saw us, flying up and crashing into the wire.
I successfully kept a couple pairs but they NEVER tamed down. I put a chick under a chicken thinking that might tame them down. No dice. That chicklet was gone like a bullet as soon and as fast as he could go.
I raised chicks to 2nd generation out of an incubator.. and they were still wild as can be.
I switched to Coturnix, for much better results. those birds are positively cuddly.
But I gave up on Valley Quail as they never tamed down a bit for me.

Searched the forums, most postings at least 10 years old.
Going to poke around the beach see some sites. Probably no kayak this time, but is there a better place to find info online about potential marine life spots?

I hear Saturday is Picnic Day, so the campus will be chock full of bands, booths, food, exhibits, even the fly fishing club....

General Talk / Re: Crab Opener Ideas

Hey, I got an idea. How about SKIP the opener?  In the last few years, the crab weren't quite ready yet, and the harvest just didn't justify the anxiety. Wait 2-3 days at least and the crowds will die down. Crab will be there.

All great info guys, thanks.  Let me repeat, conditions were glassy calm on this particular morning. I wouldn't try it on a regular day for sho' but hearing that hte fishing isn't that good anyway is helpful.  What about crab snares off the beach if its all sand?

General Talk / How is fishing at Salmon Creek to Duncan Cove?
« on: April 05, 2021, 01:59:23 PM »
It was unusually flat calm last week as I drove by all those beautiful beaches around Salmon Creek and up to Duncan Cove. The rocks offshore looked inviting. I don't remember anyone reporting fishing there and I saw no boats in the area. Why not? The beach was a little dicey, but launchable and the day was fine.  Its not an MPA.  I searched the forum and one mention of Thresher's off Duncan's Cove once. I saw some guys surf casting for perch, but no rockfish or crab fishing.  Whats the story on those beaches and rocks?  Some good reason people aren't fishing and crabbing there?

Scotty loaned me his secret rig to try out, since he's on the beach for a couple more weeks. Nailed an undersize ling first drop with it, then silence for the rest of the afternoon until the wind came up.  THanks Scotty for the support and the tunes! I probably should have had a tastykake....
