Was checking out the webcams and surf reports today and noticed some waves breaking inside the end of the harbor. Maybe it needs a good dredging. Also saw someone launching their red sailing kayak and enjoyed a moment of excitement as it exited the harbor along with a smaller paddle yak and had to climb a wave or two.

This was around 10:30. Anybody recognize their boat?

Since moving over the winter, I'm not sure where to get a decent deal on squid and it's time to quit bitching and get to fishing. San Jose had a nice price per box at Bass Pro, but it would be nice to skip that drive if possible.

Anyone know where to stock up on squidcicles in Scotts Valley?

Hope everyone is doing well heading into the holiday season.

In a few weeks, we're moving just east of the Henry Cowell forest. Didn't find a keeper house in time to transition before school and whatnot needed to be sorted, so we're renting until something meets our specs. Haven't even been there yet, but it looks good on the map.

Moving in just in time for the winter trout/steelhead season, and it looks like we'll be within easy walking distance to Eagle Creek, Powder Mill Creek, and the San Lorenzo River. It's been all salt for me over the last several years. In another life, I used to catch brook trout in remote forest streams running through Pennsylvania, so hopefully I remember how to catch a trout. Looks like report card, barbless, catch and release, and only on Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday.

Anyone know if there are other rules and regs to be aware of in that area? Other considerations. Will be arriving just in time for the winter season.

Just got a Penn Baymaster 180 on eBay and noticed the little handle lock screw is missing. Anyone know the best place for a cheap so-and-so to get the screw?

With the new groundfish regs, I'm looking at Moss Landing as a possibility for when the central management area closes shallow water in October. With the big canyon there, it looks like one could get out to 300 feet in less than a mile and try for rockfish and lings. I've read plenty about the potentially gnarly launch so this is only something I'm considering for a very flat day with favorable tides.

Does that sound like a feasible plan? Are there rockfish and lings in the deep canyon there? Anybody try this?

Never been out of Moss Landing, but it's been on my list and hopefully 2023 is the year.

Because I suffer from low IQ, my favorite old boat pole with chrome style eyelets needs a new tip and a rewrapping with new guides. Spooled up one of my old Penn 85 Seaboys with braid in the middle of last year, had fun with it, and by early this year there were serious grooves in the eyelets and tip. Noticed it when snagged one day. Pulled and the line broke right at the rod tip, rather than the sacrificial leader breaking, which was odd. The groove cut it. Checked it out and found the problem. 30-lb mono is holding up even with the grooves, but the rod needs love. The action and length and handle are perfect and this rod is the Pacific to me.  I got the guides and, after drinks one night, tried to start the job by heating the tip with a lighter. Unlike the more modern rods I’ve fixed up, the heat doesn’t seem to want to loosen the tip.

So who has tips for removing a stubborn rod tip? The rod came to me when I was a kid, sat with my dad’s stuff for maybe 20+ years, made the move to Cali with me, and is the absolute favorite of my old fiberglass boat poles that are older than almost everyone on NCKA. The black paint has mostly come off, leaving semi clear old fiberglass. As the original wrappings have come loose, some eyelets were rewrapped with waxed dental floss, which holds nicely, and maybe an ill-informed dab of crazy glue due to a lack of confidence in the job. Trying to figure out if I can get the old stick back to gloriousness. The action, the bend, the handle are as perfect for rockfish, lings, and Cali halis as a stick can be.

Due to circumstances unrelated to fishing, Monday is now a free day for me and I really wanted to try for salmon out of half moon bay. But the forecast there looks unpleasantly windy, particularly in comparison with my standbys in Santa Cruz and Capitola. Anyone planning a day out tomorrow? Thoughts on weather, what’s biting, horoscopes?
