Title: edible California crab varieties
Post by: Phil Hill on December 05, 2017, 05:05:24 AM
Hi
I've been enjoying catching crabs and am starting to wonder how many types there are for me to look for. So far I have caught Dungeness and Red Rock Crabs.

Thanks
Phil

Last time out at HMB I caught 4 species, dungeness, red rock, pacific rock and yellow rock. This adds yellow rock to your list so I attached a couple of pics.

As far as I know, they are all edible... meaning no specific toxins for other issues for any particular species.

I've personally eaten the various rock crab varieties (red, yellow, brown), dungies, box crabs, and kelp crabs.

There also is (or was) a commercial fishery for sheep crabs.

Wow that's great guys.
I looked up a picture of the Puget Sound King Crab do you DG find them up at Fort Bragg?
4 varieties at one time sounds real good JP52. Which was your favorite?

thanks,
Phil

I think the best tasting are red and pacific rock followed by dungeness and yellow last. Of course, dungeness have so much more meat that I like to catch them most of all :smt002.
