After one year of scrimpin',  saving, furloughs, threatened layoffs, and a few serious health scares -- I BOUGHT MY HOBIE today and took it out for a trial run here in SoCal.  [see pix]. I didn't have a lot of time to fish -- less than 2 hours.  I got skunked, but I did get "bumped" twice as I bounced a scampi on the bottom.  My trial run this AM was on the "inside" at Cabrillo Beach here in L.A. Harbor.  I took these pix at Xtremeline where I bought the boat and then out in LA Harbor this am.

Next week I will likely take the boat with me up to Humboldt Bay and possible the Mad River Estuary.  I should be up there Tue/Wed/Thurs of next week.  My daughter lives right by the boat ramp at the Samoa Bridge.

I may be a Newbie but now I have a boat!

The wind kicks up out of the west in LA Harbor almost every afternoon -- they call it the afternoon hurricane -- it usually starts up about 2 pm this time of year.  I was glad to be pedaling into it instead of paddling into it as I was getting out.

Welcome, dbradfield!  Love the boat.   :smt001

Have fun in Humboldt - Trinidad is definitely worth at least checking out the beach launch on the inside.

2ND day shakedown in the new Hobie

After work today I went out again at Cabrillo Beach on the inside of the sea wall.  I did not venture too far afield.  The wind was screamin' from the west as it does daily this time of year but the Hobie was great in it.  I hit the water at about 5:45 pm and stayed out until just before sunset. This time I caught (and released) a short barracuda working the jettie at the Cabrillo Marina.  I was using a green scampi and ultra-light tackle so it was quite a fight. (sorry no cell phone pix) Once home, I had my wife watch carefully and I discovered I can fit the car in the garage with the boat strapped on top so that means I can load up the night before, keep the car and boat in the garage and get out to the fishing spot early next day.  What it really means is that I can load the car this Sunday night and drive STRAIGHT to Eureka on Monday.  I think this SoCal newbie is gonna play in Humboldt bay this coming week.

Congrats on your hobie.  Life will never be the same again.  And its a great move being able to park your loaded boat in the garage the night before you trip.  really minimizes the chances of forgetting stuff (not that I would ever forget anything lmao)

Love to read some more of your reports of Cabrillo.  I know the area well and miss fishing for calicos and barries and 'buts out there

Congratulations on the new boat!  I want some peddles.  Screw paddling.
