Well I guess this trip isn't meant to be right now. Mendocino County issued a shelter in place order and that means no non-essential traveling, activity or transient lodging. So our reservations were cancelled. Bummer. Thanks for all the info and help, I think it may be a while til we get to rebook our trip.

So because of all this corona insanity, the host cancelled our AIRBNB reservation this morning. Said she is afraid of her family getting sick when they clean the place if someone is infected. Anyway, no matter how I personally feel about it, 2 months of planning are out the window, a week before.
So we are going to Ft. Bragg instead. Hopefully be able to find a good launch spot for my Hobie PA and dump a couple pots in Noyo bay, and do some fishing off the jetty. Next couple days if the surf is good we will try to find a place to reel in a few perch for dinner.  If anyone has any ideas or place to get the gal on a rockfish, I could use the info. No hot tub, or private beach at the new place we are staying at so hopefully we can catch something and have a little fun doing it. Thanks for everyone's comments and help. I will def post some pics when we get back. - Brian

Is your future wife as into fishing as you are? If not, I strongly suggest working her hobbies/interests into the trip, too... Just sayin’... ;)

Oh yeah, it was her idea!!!

That made me wonder about crabs at Albion off the docks on the river - gotta use rings there. Maybe Tim could weigh in, it’s his backyard.

Might also have some shore fishing intel to share. Maybe via PM so it doesn’t get blown up.  :smt002

There are Dungies in the Albion, and you can throw rings off the dock. Tricky current, though. A little farther upriver would probably be better, but there's less access.

Shore fishing intel, what little I have, shared offline. Disclosure: I hardly ever catch anything from shore!

Thanks Tim! Thanks for the Pm also. Hope your shoulder gets better soon!

Nothing says I Love You more then giving her crabs! Good luck!

That was not unexpected, but its still hilarious!!! Thanks for all the info guys. Someone also said I might try snaring off of Norro jetty too.

Hey guys,

Got an Air BNB down near Gaulala with a private beach and am going to pop the question to my high school sweetheart. We have reconnected after 20 years and its like we were never apart. Anyway, my cover is a 5 day trip of light tackle surf perch fishing and some crabbing. We are going to car camp a couple nights before  we make our way down to the beach house in Gaulala. I haven't surf perch fished in 20 years and haven't ever crabbed with rings. Any tips would be awesome. We were going to start at Petrolia and work our way down. Does anyone have any good info they could help me out with? Is their any places between Petrolia and Ft Bragg and down to Gaulala  where I could show my handiness to my soon to be and catch some crab from shore(docks or a pier)? Im sure Surf perch fishing will just be cruising beaches and covering ground til I find them. I have my pro angler 14, so If I needed I could take it to get out to better crabbing spots, but I kinda wanted to do that with her, and she doesn't have a kayak yet. Any info would be awesome, and I live on Lake Almanor and can always return the favor with some good lake info. Thanks

General Fishing Tips / Re: Elite Ti-2 7"

I have a TI2 9" on my Hobie PA and love it. I was video game fishing today while drop shoting crickets to smallmouth at 14 feet. I have a 30 ah lithium ion and it will run it all weekend on a full charge no problem. Good write up.

I go to Hells Canyon for a month every November and chase them. You haven't hunted steep til you have hunted chukar in Hells Canyon! I rarely hunt California for chuks. Nevada, Oregon and Idaho. Now I have a kayak Ill be fishing on my dogs rest days.

Largemouth will spawn mid May on Shasta, so they will be in the brush piles and willow bushes with this high water. Spots spawn earlier and spawn in deeper water, so surface bites will be tough. Lots of suspended fish so shad color senkos, tube baits, keitech swimbaits for numbers. Big swimibaits like S-Wvers, Huddelstons etc for the big spots. I like a blue pig and jig with pork rind too. Buts that's for the solo or wolf pack big fish off by themselves. They wont be near the horde of 13'ers
Man I should have been fishing with you when I was living in Greenville for the last two summers!

Yeah no doubt... I live by the airport in Chester. I also am a chukar hunting nut.

Count me in for one

Yeah I towed it yesterday at 65 just to see and it towed beautifully....no sway. Its only a 130lbs but still. I think a little more weight on the tongue might be a good idea.

Although I learned when I drove truck the truckers motto...."Never look back" lol

Bought a jet ski trailer and converted it for my PA 14. Some grinding, painting, new lights, wiring, hubs and safety chain and its ready to go. Finished it yesterday and so far I'm happy with it.
More importantly is the bird dog happy with it? Nice job. Good place for a spare underneath just behind the axle.

Oh she's happy...She knows we are going to use the yak for accessing some hard to reach chukars in November. Thanks for the idea on the spare. Was wondering where to put it.

From what I hear Mid May til the road opens up, were about 3 weeks behind up here for everything right now.

Got up at 4:15 this morn and made breakfast and some coffee. Weather report said windy with this storm coming in tonite, so I figured I'd better get out there early and off the water before noon .  Got the kayak in the water and was shoving off at 545. Tied on a brown trout pattern broken back Rapala, and started trolling 150' - 200' back. Water was 52 degress and a nice green tinge. First hit 10 minutes into it and put a small feisty brown in the boat.

Got my brown pattern Rapala's hooks caught in the net, so I unhooked it, and tied on a black over silver 4" broken back Rapala. From then on it was one fish after the other. 14- 18" rainbows. Most of them spit out smelt after being caught. Saved a couple bleeders for crawdad bait later this week.  Most fish were caught in 8' to 13' feet of water, near the rocks before it dropped off into 17-23'.

Headed back to the ramp at 11:00 and hooked fish number 17 300 yards from the ramp. back in my driveway at 11:47. Nice morning!
