October 31st - On this day I guided my very best client for an abalone dive to close out the season. At 14 years old, this guy is so gung ho! We showed up south of the Cape to see conditions that were nowhere near as nice as the forecast. We opted for a hike down the beach instead of diving along the road where it was pretty rough and muddy, but things weren't that much better to the south. We entered the water just after 3PM, and it was cold at around 50 degrees, but there turned out to be some decent visibility at 3 to 4 feet! We searched around some areas that I used to frequent 15 to 20 years ago, and there were a few abs to be found. Eventually we ended up out in a little more challenging water, and I was so stoked to see my son thriving in those conditions! Collin ended up finding and pulling his own ab, and I grabbed one too. Amazingly, even though last year I'd seen part of this particular area with pretty heavy urchin damage, the spots we dove in today were urchin-free! We each saw only 1 urchin, and there was plenty of kelp.
We will see what the future holds for our nearshore ecosystem, and I just hope that opportunities are still there for continuing the abalone tradition.
November 2nd - With a few salmon hooked nearshore along the Lost Coast in the past few days, hopes were high for a hookup with a late season king today. Worked the usual Cove hotspots on a wet and cold day with Rob Bray and Eric Kaai. Caught and released a massive cabezon - probably 14 pounds - should be good video footage. Not much going on salmon-wise for most of the day, but we all had plenty of rockfish and lingcod action. Late in the session Eric and I were heading toward the nearshore halibut grounds when I picked up a hot Coho around 6 or 8 pounds. We did some laps in the area in hopes for a Chinook but it wasn't happening. Eric and I were off the water after around 6 to 7 hours, but Rob was still there when we left - hope you got one, bro!
Cove rockfish, lingcod and Cal-hal open through 12/31 - with crab opening tonight at midnight there's plenty to do at the west coast's most badass kayak fishing port. :smt001
