Title: Elk Tourney Report 8/12/06
Post by: KZ on August 13, 2006, 08:50:18 PM
OK... since everyone else is probably still recouperating from the event, I'll start the report here.  I'm certain others will chime in with their experiences and photos.

First of all, as usual, a HUGE THANK YOU to Sean and his family and everyone else who pushed the buttons and pulled the levers to make this event an incredible success!  This was teamwork exemplified... if something needed doing... folks pitched in to help.  Also, thank you to the sponsors who ponied up the prizes.

Secondly, a HUGE THANK YOU to all who donated to the Coastside Fishing Club through our annual raffle.  In total, we raised just shy of $1,600 which will be donated to Coastside.  There were many $100 donors and the contributions FAR exceeded my wildest expectations.  WAY TO GO!!!   (Oh... and Zilla won both fishing rods... and In Seine won the Whale Tail 14kt gold pendant  :smt007 donated by Fishshim.)

Thirdly... thank the rest of you for not finding any fish bigger than my 16.8 # ling... and Congratulations to Dave Swenson for his second place finish with a 10.4# ling and  Tony Guerrero for his third place finish with a 9.1# ling.

Now I need to figure out what to do with that second Marauder  :smt017

Even with the excellent weather above the water line (gorgeous weather actually), the conditions on the ocean were rough and the fish were tight lipped.  Swells were probably pushing 9-feet and you definitely had to keep an eye out for that rogue breaker.  It turned the area inside the cove into a washing machine that only got worse as the day went on.  Most everyone was able to manage and thankfully get back safely without any serious mishaps.  Good teamwork on the beach to assist with landings as well.  That's what it's all about.

There were some decent fish caught... some big coppers and reds but no true lingzillas, aside from the 22# ling that Fuzz speared after the derby.

My personal fishing experience included my fishfinder going out on me just after launch (battery issues) so I was fishing blind.  I wound up catching and releasing a 28" ling early on, and landing the biggest copper I've ever caught, at approximately 23" and 7.80 lbs.  Kept that one, and around 10:00 or so I hooked into and landed a very scrappy ling that wound up taking the pot... 36" and 16.8 lbs. I gaffed it once and it slithered back into the water, only to be successfully gaffed the second time.   Thanks to Joel for being my cheerleader throughout the ordeal and issuing the play by play.  Also released a small assortment of various gophers and chinas.  Lucky lure was a 7" dark green swimbait with red flake custom poured by Bill with 4oz jig head and tipped with a strip of ling belly meat from Chuck/Stuart/Fuzz's catch the day earlier.

The food was great... the highlight for me was Chefstefano's UNBELIEVEABLE Ceveche and freshly made tortilla chips (I thought we were roughing it... :smt017), followed only by Chef and Chuck's team effort with the massive fish fry they hosted on Friday night.

Finally, happy birthday again to Jelly and CPKayak... glad we could all celebrate that together.

Awesome weekend... pics later.

Unusually, I am speechless (nearly  :smt002). Sounds like a great event thanks to many but particularly Sean and his family. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Bendo at Mendo II. Good hear of the success and that all made it safe home to port. Looking forward to pics (and particiapting in person next year).

It is difficult to follow such a thoughtful and eloquent post but here goes.  First of all Thanks to Sean for coordination of such a great event. Secondly thanks to Bill for putting together and keeping this forum going smoothly for all of us. Thridly thanks to chuck for his savvy tourney skills. Fourth thanks to Eric for a great raffle.  As you can see it is an amazing team effort.   Without them I never would have had the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful sport and event.

As Eric pointed out the water was less than Ideal and was very reminiscent of washing machine. Suds and all.  However Bill and Joel being the guides they are brought us to calm or calm as can be waters.  Fishing was great for me catching nearly 14-16 fish with 6 lings.  4 under lings, one keeper lost on the yak and another thrown back although it was a keeper, it was dinner size for Eric's winning fish. As I was bringing up a greenling a huge Ling followed it to the water line only turn disappear back to the 60 feet it came from.  In my estimation it was nearly 12-15 lbs.  wouldn't have won but would have given second and third a run for the money. Dave great fish for second and I am Glad we broke the wind curse!!

On a food note everything was great.  Chef you are talented.  My first Ceveche and it was tremendous.  My wife thought it was the best she has ever had.  Amazing.  The Flank steak, pulled pork and chowder were off the hook too.  Bill great pork roast as well.

In case anyone doesn't know what  a nice guy Joel (mooch) is, after my wife found out she had to stay late at work he kindly pitched our tent for us.  We arrived at 9:30pm and putting a tent up would have been miserable.  As it was I didn't bring the plug for the air mattress so night 1 was pretty miserable.  night two was better after some rigging to keep air in.

Can't wait for next year.

Jason

Erik,

Congratulations on the win and successful raffle.   I'm glad to hear you used the lingzilla head bashing scream I thought you last year.  I like to think it makes a difference. :)

I left fairly early (my son Owen wasn't feeling to good), and I didn't get a chance to calculate the results of the North vs South grudge match.  I'm hoping someone took a good picture of the weigh-in board so I can do the math later.

Oh and Sean, thanks again. Glad to see you well for the festivities this year.

Brian

Nice catch Erik and excellent job on the raffle.  I'm glad I could contribute.

I'd also like to echo all of the thanks that went out. Thanks to Sean and family for the event site and hospitality. Thanks to Bill for this website. Thanks to Chuck for the fried fish. Thanks to Mooch, Dave, and Jason for letting me tag along through some spots that I NEVER woulda paddled through by myself (the scenery on the water was worth the trip alone). Thanks to Chef for making the awesome jade necklace I won in the raffle...keeping my "every raffle" winning streak alive. And thanks to EVERYONE who showed up for making this a spectacular event.

I landed one 5lb 6oz copper for the day, but still had a great time just checking out the scenery. I will definitely be back. It was nice to see the usual suspects and meet some new members. Congrats to Erik, Dave, and Tony for their top three fish and congrats to all who won sweet prizes in the raffle...especially Zilla!!

Dave great pic of the Aiden.  If you can send it to me that would be great.  Have fun with your mini kayaks! It is a good excuse to get your kids out there now!

Dustin you are always welcome to go on a suicide mission with us.

Here are a couple of pics.  1 is Fuzz's great diving catch.  22lb ling, Uni and abs.  Great dive.  Thanks to Bsteves for the fish printing. My wife and son enjoyed it very much.

Oh yeah - MAJOR thanks to whoever moved my paddle out of the surf zone and left it higher up on the beach. I realized I was paddle-less as I was packing up my truck 5 HOURS later. I remembered exactly where I left it and thought the worse.

Luckily when I got down to the beach I found it moved up by the cliff.

So, I owe somebody big time!  :smt006

Great Pics! thanks for posting them so everybody can get a taste of the trip.

erik's winning ling looks big to me!

Those are some whopper coppers too,  those are some of the best fighting rockfish. I think they are
one of my all around favorite fish: looks, fight, eating.

glad you guys survived the weather I looked at the weather map friday night and saw a gnar local gradient
up there, one bouy north of you guys had 34 knot winds that night! I think if you fished there you can
fish anywhere, the tourneys this year seem like extreme kayaking classes not fishing tourneys!

Wow, what a tournament! It was awesome meeting everyone.  Well, the fishing wasn't that great, but it was great being out there in the big swell with 50 other kayakers! Defintiely the biggest swell I've been in a kayak!  I felt sick all day but I wanted a new kayak and stuck it out.  I finally got a nice copper (scwafish posted a pic of it above) that went 5.7 lbs. I got it in only 35 feet.  I thought it was a ling because it was taking drag!  I did have one good ling on that came off when I reeled in half a 6" swimbait.
A big thanks (as always) to Sean and his family, especially Elsie(sp?) who gave up a trip to the beach to hang out with my wife Andy and our 4.5 month old daughter Ella.  Andy was appreciative of the preview of when Ella is older. Walrus and CPKayak, Pat and Randy, I hope Ella didn't keep you guys up too much.  This tourney served as our test camping trip with the young one and I think it was a success.  Andy can't wait to go again next year.  Nice meeting you Bill, bring your wife and daughter next time if possible!
Really can't say enough about how much fun it was, so Ill let everyone else chime in,
Joe (bluefin17)

I was really bummed not being able to make it. Sounds like it was good food and people were great as always. Bummer about the weather. My truck had to be worked on. I had the dealership do the first oil change since it was free. They had cross threaded the oil filter on and simply torqued it down and partially stripped the threads. This didn't become apparant until thursday night when I tried to get it off.

Those were some narly swells for sure!

I had a great time. I've already got my wife thinking that we should turn it into a three day weekend next year. No more of this daytrip stuff for me.

While I only kept 3 fish, I'd have to rate the fishing as excellent. I kept a decent sized copper, a small gopher that wouldn't swim back down, and a 3 lb plus blue. I released two underlings, at least a limit's worth of blues, and a couple more small gophers. I also had a hitchhiker that I never saw, on a 12" blue that I was using as live bait. All this in just a few hours, while dealing with 4 lost rigs and a backlash from hell that I got while trying to unsnag. If I had been targeting just blues, I have no doubt that I could have limited out in half an hour, culling all fish under 3 pounds. I had them hitting a bare hook they were so voracious. And a 3 pound blue on a trout rod is a hoot, I will be fishing for them like that again.

Thanks again to Scwafish for making this happen, and for Bill for the site.

Next year!!

Scott

Thanks to everyone, had a great time.   :smt001

I meet Zilla on Wednesday at Van Damme. Thursday we did a morning  and afternoon session at Van Damme for 2 fish each.  Camped out at Mendocino Campground Thursday night and meet up with Tote, Becky and Chub.  We had an excellent dinner of fresh Abs and rockfish.

Friday went to Elk, set the campsite and headed out on the water.  Conditions were bigger than Saturday with 15 MPH winds.  At one point Brad clocked us at a 1.7 mph drift!  I managed 1 ling which weighed in at 9.7 pounds and donated it to chef for the Cerviche.

Saturday even though the swells were smaller, the confused sea had me feeling almost sea sick. Stuck it out till around 12 and managed only one underling.

Looks like you folks had a great time. I'm bummed I had to miss it.  last year I made a stink about popularizing such a secluded spot, but having fished it quite a few times in the past year i have not observed any real significant increase in fishing pressure.  So, to kind of suck it up, i was wrong.  I drive by there quite often too, and have never seen the hoards I feared. If all sportfishing were done by kayak, there probably wouldn't be many problems.  Glad everyone had fun.

Got to Mendocino Wednesday and set up camp. Went ab diving Thursday morning and started the day by blowing out my knee on the launch.
Made the hill at Elk a royal beotch! Thanks to CHUB and Becky I made it up and down with all our stuff.
Hooked up with Zilla and Jdyak on Thursday and had a blast!
Friday we all headed over to Elk.
CHUB, Jdyak, Zilla ans Chefstephano did a pre-fish Friday. Have a great pic of them heading out on another camera I will post later.
Saturday got an early start to some big water. Becky held out until about 10 and CHUB made it to about 11. The water got the best of them. I stuck it out and had some good fishing right up 'til the end. Really surprised I didn't give in to the nasty seas.
Caught several rockfish, but no contenders. Did come home with some nice fillets for fish tacos tonight.
Had a wonderful time fishing and socializing with everyone. Food, friends, and fun. What more can a person ask for? Just a fantastic group of people and a fantastic event. Thank you everyone for making it such a great event.

I change my prediction from lasting 15 min to about 5 min in those seas.

Kudos to all who can actually keep their lunch down (let alone fish) in those conditions.

A big thanks to the White family and also Sean's mother in law.  They made this weekend one I wont forget.  The rolleez wheels are the bomb also!!!  Thanks to Bill and Chuck also, and to Joel and Bill separately for almost getting me in hot water :smt005, I was able to handle it though.  It was great to meet more ncka'ers and I had a blast fishing.   I caught at least 7 blacks, 5 blues, 1 gopher that I released successfully.  I ended up keeping a huge Red, huge Copper and a really heeeuggge Cabezon that gave me a nice fight right around 1230.  THought I had something special till I got back and saw that there were more than a couple lings landed.  No lings whatsoever for me.  The trail wasn't so bad this year with the new cart and thanks once again for lining that up for me Sean and Leah.  Leah, your mom is awesome!  She had me rollin a few times.  Oh, and Ben, its about time you upgraded!!!  Congrats on the paddle you lucky dog.  JTF..

As the others have said, Thank you Bill for bringing us all together and Thank you Sean and Leah and the Greenwood CC folks for the terrific venue to share our passion.  And thanks to everyone who shared their special talents....of course Chuck and Chef for pushing me wayyyyyyyyyy beyond full both Friday and Saturday, all the other terrific pot luck contributors, Chris and Chris for sharing their BD cakes and the Bodega crew for teaching me how to do the fish prints....home decor here I come.  And the opportunity to get to know others better is always special because this is an exceptionally cool group of genuinely nice folks.......thanks RockHopper for catching me on the beach.

And camping with even this large group in this incredible location did not take away from the beauty at all.  The children and the guitars and all the wonderful conversation blended perfectly with this incredible location.

I was so lucky to be in the same are and get to share the excitement of watching Eric bring up that nice ling.  It made the whole day worthwhile for me.  I caught lots of nice fish.....my best China ever so it was a success of sorts as a fishing day even considering the swell and churn.

And then finally seeing what the secret bounty under that agitated water with Fuzz et al's harvest late Saturday was truly an eye opener.  The more I see of the diving side the more I envy these guys.

Thank you Sean and Leah for the wine.  We will hopefully toast a completion of part one of the MLPA closures for the central coast in a few days.

well that was a great party!  it was a pleasure to share my b-day with so many cool people. thanks to leah and sean for putting it on, the great food from steve and chuck and others and the distillers at the patron factory! it was good to party with eric and christina again, as well as pat and randy.  i think erik may have been the first non-newbie to win a tourney. after all his work on the raffle it was fitting.  my wife, jana, enjoying meeting those of our group she had not seen before, and she was really surprised at the number of us, all with tons of passion and great gear[including joel's apron].
the seas were totally sick, that big to 9 ft swell had me feeling as green as a chartreuse swimbait on a couple occasions. fishing those wash rocks really keeps your reflexes sharp. a wave caught me by surprise and broke over my port side and across  the deck, it took a rockfish off my boat right back to were it came from, what a lucky fish!
it seems that none off my photos worked, so i have none to post

Again, thanks to the White Family for all their efforts putting this great event together, and allowing us to borrow wheels for the second year in a row.  I am done building PVC carts.  Sean I'll take two orders of wheels.  Well, I was the last one in after having major cart malfunction!  I built two carts and both were casualties of the Elk Gauntlet.  I enjoyed the great food and conversations involving curvaceous wood and Jenna Jamison.  We were successful with the maiden voyage of the Team Bodega kayak trailer, so all in all a positive experience.  I only caught a few small rockies, a couple underlings and a small cab.  I think my bait was larger than the fish I caught.  But a great time none the less.

First off, a little redundant but it needs to be said - a big thank you to everyone involved in making this event run smoothly(Sean & family, KZ, etc.)!  It was a great setup and while I sometimes felt like I was gonna die walking up & down that @#$%^& hill, I had an awesome time!

It was great meeting all of you & racking my brain trying to remember two sets of names(real & screennames).    Everyone was really cool & despite the challenging conditions, a lot of quality fish came up!

My grattitude to everyone from organizers to participants for making it a special event.  Thank you!

Just want to thank Sean and Bill and everyone that worked so hard to make such a great tournament. I would also especially like to thank Chuck and the Walrus for making us outsiders feel so welcome. I was honored to also have finally met the infamous Chefstefano (sp?). The food was outrageous, the town beautiful and the fishing outstanding. I caught a bunch of the assorted rockfish to five pounds and farmed my only opportunity for glory at yakside. Can you say "CHOKE'?. Alan also had a good time and caught a good bunch of rockies. The best part was making new friends. Hope to see everybody again next year if you'll have us back. Thanks again.

What can I say other than THANK YOU to the organizers (Sean & his family) and the town of Elk for their hospitality.  It was a fantastic weekend.   The people, comraderie and great food are what this tournament is all about.  :beer2

Erik, congrats on your big ling.  You are a great angler, always consistently catching quality fish.

Thanks Chuck and Fuzz (Harold) for sharing the driving duties and the help up Heart Attack Hill.

Friday was my second time spearfishing.  I had every intention grabbing 3 abs, then give half hearted try at spearfishing, before concentrating on fishing.  Instead, my fishing rod never left the hatch.  It was a truly eye opening underwater experience.  I have to hand it to Fuzz.  He knows his stuff and taught me a lot in a short while.

First, he directed me to a school of blacks.  I was trying to learn how to "hunt" them without spooking them, when he calls me over to shoot a ling.  I swim over throught the kelp, where he then tells me how it's in a hole.  We go down and he's got his flash light "on the fish".  I'm staring into the hole, but don't see the fish.  He starts shaking his light on it and I can mentally hear him saying "shoot it, shoot it".  Well, I see this "dark spot" and assume its the fish.  So I aim, but suddenly a fish about a foot above/to the right moves.  Ahh, there it is.  I quickly readjust and shoot.  It's twisting violently, so I knew I got it, but it was time to head up.  Not wanting to let go, I horsed it through the hole.  I couldn't believe I actually shot a ling.  THANK YOU FUZZ!!!!

After that, I figured I needed to shoot fish un-assisted.  So, back to the school of blacks.  That was a blast, literally. At the end of the dive I was BEAT!!

BTW, that morning, Fuzz also saw 6 other legal lings, in the 8-12lb range.  He left them all un molested in his quest for a larger fish.  We'll, the next day (Sat PM), he found a shootable fish.  22lbs of toothy lingzilla.  :smt103  Fred and I were in awe!!!

Wow big thanks to Elk, Sean and  family for another unbelievable event and everyone else who chipped in to help it go smoothly. The company was awesome as usual with everyone willing to lend a helpful hand. The food..it was awesome!

the seas where unforgiving, at times I felt like I was in a cereal bowl and some big monster was shaking it back and forth. Then every couple of minutes huge set of waves came cruising by just enough to remind me that I was crazy. fishing for me was moderate with me having to work hard for my  9.1# ling came in 95-100 feet just north of nose rock.

big thanks to Ben and the other guys who picked me out of the 1 1/2 foot surf and who ever  moved my yak up the surf line i owe you!

Tony

It's only our 2nd year for hosting such events and we already look like ol' pros.  Congrats and thanks to Sean and family, Erik, Bill, and everyone who help make Elk II a big success.

As Sean said.... the fact that we were able to fish in such rough conditions shows how experienced we've become as a group.  Kudos to all!

Personally, it was huge pleasure to meet new members like Zilla and Cafe Craig... and to see old friends.  It's also a big honor to have guys like Ed and Allen come all the way from Utah to join us.

Congrats to our derby winners -- Erik, Dave, and Tony

I'm already looking forward to next one!

The former Elk champ, Brian / bsteves and the future champion, EK - fishing the outflow between two rock piles.....this was the same place I hooked up on two lings (Bill has pics) I used a combo platter set up with a green hoochie on top and a megabait on the bottom. A 20 inch ling hit the hoochie and the 24 1/2 Ling took the mega bait.  :smt005

I just want to chime in and say thanks to Sean and his family for making that a great event. I had a great time, the food and drink was awsome. I arrived at about 0520 from Ukiah and met up with Mahi Mahi (Dan), and Kickin Bass (Andy). Mahi Mahi got suited up and headed out. I kept one fish, the copper in Sean's pictures 5.4 lbs. I caught a few other smaller fish and released them to figh next year.
Meeting everyone was great and I will see you all in my back yard, I mean, at the bendo @ mendo :smt003

Just got back from a "stretched" Elk weekend. Played down the coast on the way home. The postings have already well documented the event with pictures and kind words but I must add mine as well.

Thanks Mooch for the phone call that got me registered in time. Thanks Sean and the whole White family for the countless hours required to make this happen. Thanks Bill for maintaining the web site and all you do to make these events possible. Chuck, Stu and Howard; your Friday catch both impressed, motivated and fed us all well Friday evening. I don't know how you guys do it but we all owe you dearly. Thanks to the residents of Elk who allow us to play in their backyard. Thanks to all the outrageous cooks who prepared and shared the food. Thanks to those who posted the wonderful pictures documenting the event. Mooch, you've become quite the photographer!! Thanks to the winners, sponsors and Coastside for its efforts to maintain some of our fishing rights. It was great fun with all our new and established friends.

My personnal score included one underling hitchiking on a black, a nice china, yellow and black, several small blacks and a half dozen gophers. All are happily back with their families and friends amongst the rocks. Hopefully they will be bigger next year.

Looking forward to Mendo.  Mooch, there will be chile for sure!!

Well guys-

A little late post but I just wanted to thank everybody involved with getting this together. I didn't do that well fishing wise but the great company more than made up for it. It's always good to share water and bs stories with all of you guys. Next year, I'm going to finish my diving early... missed out on all of the great eats again. The crackers and cold cuts was more than enough for me though. What really got me was everybody teasing me about how good everything was and how they had to force themselves to eat more food. Yup... that's how it goes though. I'm looking forward to Bendo... I'll pull a Tote and be first in the chow line... yeah baby!!!

Alright... I think I finally figured out how to tweak these video clips so they stream a bit quicker.

I posted two video clips from the Elk Derby on my server...

One is about a 1:20 clip from on the water to give you a taste of the conditions that day... albeit in one of the more mellow areas closer to Cuffy's point.

The other is the soon-to-be famous Mooch call.

Thanks all I had a great time, being a noob to the ocean I was a bit apprehensive about the launch, landing and the hill. The launch was no problem and it was nice that Papa Sean was giving us advice broadcast over the VHF as we went out, right when I got north of the rock coming out he came on and said that it was a little rough there, I thought cool it will calm down when I get out a little more nope it just got bigger. I thought these guys are truly crazy but after I settled in and started fishing it was great I can't wait to get out again. I fished big mackerel and just C&R a couple of small blues and gophers and had 1 good pulldown. The coast line at Elk is spectacular can't wait to go again when its a little calmer. The landing went smooth and the hill wasn't as bad as it sounded. Thanks to the White Clan, Bill for bringing us all together it was great seeing all of you oh and Mooch for the phone call. The food was OFF THE HOOK. can't wait for Mendo.

Somebody took a picture of me and my stringer.  Whoever it was, can you PM me?  I was holding up a stringer with four 4lb vermillion, some gophers, and no lings, if that helps refresh your recollection.  The pic was taken by the cleaning station before I skinned and gutted my fish.

Thanks
