I am new to the board. I am going to buy a fishing kayak and am considering both used and new. If someone has a good deal on one of the bigger boats like a Prowler 15, Tarpon 160 etc or a tandem let me know. If the price is near new I would prefer to just buy new and get a warranty.

Where are some of the places I can test drive kayaks?

Hopefully I will see some of you guys out on the water. I'm in the Sacto area.

Man! I almost had to sell my two kayaks! But it would've been for good reason: I found a Hobie Mirage Outback Angler on CL for $700!!! Called my wife and asked if it would be OK to buy another kayak (a SWEET kayak) and she said Yes, as long as I sell one or both my others. I immediately called the dude and he said that somebody had just called and agreed to check it out the next day. He called the next day to say it sold. DAMNIT!!! I knew it was too good to be true!
Just goes to show that you should always search the different areas on CL, and not just your local area. Because this one was in Santa Barbara but I totally would've drove down there to get such a good deal!

Hey amphibian, I saw Mooch posted a Scrambler XT on here for $375. I have a Scrambler and like it. Especially the weight, its super light. Lots of NCKAers rock the Scrambler on the big blue!
Good luck,
PK

EDIT: Here are some deals I found on CL:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/spo/439193304.html

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/boa/437094985.html (that Tarpon 140 for 579 looks like a good deal or the Prowler 13 for 549)

Ya, it was a good deal. Thats why I was considering it...moreso than specifically wanting an Outback. Although, I'm sure the Outback is a nice yak. Heck, anything is nice compared to the turd I paddle...an old Drifter.
I am considering selling both my yaks (the other is a scrambler) this winter so I can pool the money together and buy something nice, like a Tarpon, Prowler, Explorer/Fish N Dive, or X Factor. Yaa, thats a pretty wide net I'm casting but I am not sure which one I prefer yet. Still haven't paddled a Malibu or Cobra or hobie brand kayak...so I should probably do that before deciding.

Seems like the best deals are in Santa Barbara and San Diego. I have friends in both locales so I would lean on one of them to pick it up for me...then I'd drive down there whenever is most convenient. Although, yes, I would be paying for extra gas...but, hey, its not like I'm driving to Fresno or Bakersfield (or some other crappy town like that) to pick it up! I mean, it wouldn't be the WORST thing in the world to have to visit SB or SD... :smt002

Sorry for the thread-jack amphibian! Glad to hear you got a yak. See ya on the water!

I couldn't believe the deals I saw in San Diego and L.A.

It's not extra gas money if you fish while you are down there. There is more than one good model of Kayak which leaves you leeway to shop.
