Kayak Fly Fishing / Picking up hitchhikers ocean style
« on: August 16, 2021, 03:40:24 PM »
Finally got out up here on the Oregon coast (Damn 6 months of WIND). Port Orford was great with little wind hardly any wave action and the fish they chomping at the bit to be caught. Right of the bat fish on, it tugged, it went that way and this way and all of a sudden it went nuts right into the kelp and got tangled up . Great now I've lost the fish plus going to lost my fly to say the least. Get over to where the is kelp and start hand hand lining my flyline to try and save it but feel the tug of the fish so I every gently  back off giving it some slack so the fish work himself free. No more than 30 seconds later the fly line is moving out of the kelp and I haul back and stick him one more time and the fight was on once again. Within 12 feet of me looking down there is this large mottled bluish form hoovering next to my fish no wait, it has my fish. All that was going through my mind was I need a bigger net, next thing I now was my fishing partner was coming over with his net (must have said it out loud) so while he was coming over he also had a fish on and and was dragging it along the rockfish made a daring escape only to have the ling pounce on it again. If that wasn't enough the rockfish made one more attempt and broke free and dove down only to find the ling had dove below it and came up at it at this time the rockfish was head first 3/4 of the way in the lings mouth and the ling was not going to let go at no cost. My fishing partner got me his net  and netted a 34" 24lb. lingcod. Needless to say the rest of the day was icing on the cake(stop counting at 18 for the blacks). 3 hours later the bite started to die off finished our limits and headed back in.

Hopefully once the weather gets better up here, I can start to use these? I hate the way they look at me and seem to be saying"why aren't you using us yet".

Kayak Fly Fishing / No blacks but these are more special
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:46:19 PM »
Got out up here at Sunset Bay Oregon and things finally came together, except for the blacks they didn't get the memo. No wind, glass like conditions, sunny and clear water but no fish. So ended up with the next best thing if not the best thing mother nature could hand me 2 greenlings and a cabby. On top of it all 90% of all the people that where out their got skunked

Kayak Fly Fishing / no salmon but a nice surprise
« on: September 21, 2017, 08:04:54 PM »
Went smallmouth bass fishing here on the Coquille river in Oregon a couple of weeks ago. Did really good on them. Was floating with the current/tide down river catching all kinds of fish(non bragging size) when we came to a deep hole and the guy I was fishing with fell in or I thought till I looked around and saw him in his kayak and this big splash ring from a fish about 2 ft. from his kayak. The look on ones face when a 20+ lb. salmon goes full airborn nor more than a foot or so from his kayak is priceless. Was not expecting salmon this early for this river and this high up in its system. Needless to say we tried everything but to no warm hugs from the salmon. Next day I decided the salmon were in need of a hurting so off I went to the same spot but nothing except for the smallies which seam to have gotten some what bigger. Talk to a guy that was throwing bobber and eggs and said that the tide was pretty high and that the fish went on up further. Bummed by the bad news and went on my way floating down catching smallies along the way(thank goodness there lots of them-took the sting away some what). Got down to the take out point made a couple more cast and WHAM! fly stops dead in its tracks, Fish on! this one fought way different than any smallmouth- running, going back and forth across the river and so forth. Got it close to the yak and saw a silver flash and started to think a jack salmon. Low and be hold The unicorn of Oregon fishes a striped bass. Nothing of size about 14 inches or there about. Got him quickly back in the water and made a few more casts and and caught 3 more of his brothers. 1st, striped bass of the year, those 4 gems really made up for the lack of salmon.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Rock and Bottom Fish on the fly
« on: August 14, 2015, 09:09:31 AM »
Thought I would share some Oregon salt fly fishing .Got out yesterday in the salt mostly to test out the fly line that I spliced together. Fishing was OK  lots of small blacks (10"-12") a few in the large size and then I hit Cabby City. Caught 8 Cabbies in a row, from the same spot(16"-18") and 1 green rock fish. Fly line held up but I think more testing is required so I'll be testing it out on salmon later on today.

Hey all, decided to join up. Already a member of NWKA for about 3 years now. Hail from the great North Bend/Coos Bay area up here in Oregon. I'm a lifelong fly flinger and at home either in the salt or freshwater. I have the Ocean Kayak Big Game prowler in yum yum yellow.
