General Talk / Re: Fish disqualified on DOTY?
« on: November 18, 2021, 03:29:33 PM »
Seems very clear in the rules why this was DQ'ed (let me know if you disagree after reading them). BKK quoted the exact quote that I would have referenced as well.

For the record, admins HATE having to DQ fish, especially good size ones, and we typically discuss the entry prior to disqualifying if it is borderline (which this particular one was not).

Here are the rules for submitting fish:

Good luck and dive safe!

DOTY / DOTY 2020 Ready! Entry fee, etc.
« on: January 19, 2020, 02:00:24 PM »
The submission site for DOTY 2020 is up and running! Get on there and submit your fish!

http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/

BUT FIRST:

Remember to pay your entry fees. Because the site was not ready at the new year, we are giving a grace period on entry fees to the end of January. After January 31st, you must have paid your entry fee before spearfishing fish you plan to enter in the competition.

USE THIS LINK TO PAY FEES: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8lJ3mEiXix

Don't use the link on the rule page. We are working on getting that updated.

Also be sure to read the rules on how to measure, photograph, and enter fish.

That's all for now. Good luck and dive safe!

Hey divers! Please hold off on 2020 entries until the 2019 site is archived (happening soon).

And be sure to get your entry fee paid by the end of the month if you want to submit fish!

DUDE!!!

Dos pez fuertes at once!!!!!  :smt007 :smt044
Holy shit! Looks like you stoned the first one. That must of been a bit of a surprise and a story to tell the grandchildren  :smt001

Congrats man!......is that Isla Cerralvo?

Haha thanks man! Yeah I stoned the first one and started swimming up. Then I was confused to see my float partially submerged and pulling even though I could see my fish from the surface perfectly still on its side. My buddy Luke then went down and shot another while they were still schooling beneath us. A triple header on two spears. Don't know if that will happen to me again! Definitely special! Our boat caption was stoked and videotaped me bringing them in to the boat.

Yeah in the vicinity of Isla Cerralvo.

Well done. GREAT video!
Loved the cut backs from air to sea.
Daaaaaamn! That is awesome. Nice work Matt!
Great stuff thx for sharing  :smt006
Thanks for the awesome video Matt  :smt007

Thanks guys! The wahoo especially was a dream fish for me. Stoked I was able to get two on this trip.

Was lucky enough to nab some great drone and gopro footage of a nice wahoo and a two-for-one on AJs this summer.

The wahoo in the vid was 45 lbs. Later in the trip, I got another that was larger (58 lbs gutted) but unfortunately didn't get that one on video.

Enjoy!

My friends Alex and Luke were kind enough to take some pics.

Nice work on the video!  :smt006

Very cool video.  Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the great video clip Matt  :smt007
Whoa that was wild! Nice fish :-)
Thanks guys!

Wow that was an awesome video. It has happened to me a few times over the years and only while I am diving
Thanks! Interesting... I would think it would happen to hook and line fisherman more often given the longer length of time it generally takes to land the fish.

That is mind boggling footage. Had my heart racing!
Mine too! Was definitely an intense couple minutes!

Epic footage, Matt!
That's a legit gun too!
Thanks man! Was fortunate to borrow it from a friend.

You should have shot that fucking seal
Haha usually just a poke would do the trick. Plus I was without a loaded gun. Tried to call a buddy over to poke him, but the current had pushed me away from my buddy. It's hard to see in the video, but I may or may not have given him a jab with the back of my spear  :smt002

Pretty sure that’s the same scenario that happened with Granitedive a few years ago but the outcome was different. Went to guard his yellowtail from a furbag and got bit in the hand by a hammerhead.

I believe it was at Cortez Tanner Banks but not sure.
They had to chopper him out of there.
Sweet Vid  :smt007
Damn that's crazy... I've heard hammerheads can be an issue out there, but have never seen one. We were out at SBI, so not quite as wild as Cortez or Tanner. Thanks for sharing that!

Made it out for a day at the channel islands this week and found some schools of small yellowtail mid-afternoon. An aggressive sea lion was giving us a hard time, but fortunately we were able to land all of our fish and not lose any gear.

Here's a vid of the action we caught on camera:

I'm interested selling my Hero 4 Black with a battery backpack, underwater housing, and a spare battery. Far superior to the Hero 3, but doesn't have the stabilization of the Hero 6 and 7.

It can record in 4k and up to 120fps at 1080p. The battery backpack is a game changer and it is kind of a bummer they don't offer one for the Hero 5, 6, or 7. It basically doubles your battery life.

$150 if you're interested.
