Some good ideas coming out here.  I'm glad this topic was raised.

I think we do have a culture of safety and conscientious boating here, and I also think it's important to maintain a status of just being an internet club.  We share information and promote safety, but we do not take responsibility for choices that others make - whether they're club 'members' or not.

Maybe we should make an effort to promote safety on the introduction post replies.

As oppose to just saying the generic "welcome" we give them valuable information that they can use right off the bat.

ie...

Invest in an intro course to kayaking.

If you want to use a sit-on-top kayak for coastal trips, this class is a great investment towards making your adventures safe and enjoyable This class combines the Intro to Kayaks and Surf Zone for a comprehesive and intensive fun day. Includes wetsuit, sit-on-top single kayak and all gear. Instructors are ACA trained. A minimum 2 people are required for the class, or available by private instruction.

Offered every Sunday 9:30 to 5:00

You will also be able to demo their yaks in the process. I believe they offer an NCKA discount as well.

I strongly recommend a course of this type. Always remember safety first. You want to feel safe and comfortable in the water before you start fishing from a yak.

Fewer rules the better.

I preach safety as much or more than anyone, but making a requirement like that is a non-starter in my book.  A healthy dose of anarchy is part of what makes NCKA great.

How in the world could someone sue NCKA if they fell out of their own boat?

This is an old generic response that I would add onto my "welcome" the classes might have change some but I know they are still available.

I took them and they provided me the confidence and knowledge to make me safe OTW

I learned a lot here without even owning a kayak.  I thought the 10 post was to try and get people to participate and not sign up just to sell something.

I don't like the idea for folks to go out on their own and document self rescue just to join.  Let them learn from stories and videos and make an effort to self rescue with others who have done it.  Or post self rescue days and see who comes to practices with you.  That's a better way to meet new people more of what I have liked about NCKA.

I rather like that idea, even if I am a newbie  :smt003  I'm a web surfer that used to fish/hunt/hike/camp almost 200 days out of the year.  Now life constantly gets in the way of those hobies I cherish so much.  I've had a Kraken since December and have only used it a handful of times.  Someday life will slow down and I can live it again.

Bushy

people sued for the strangest and dumbest reasons, you be surprised if there is a requirement to pass a training to signed up. even if NCKA wins, it's a lost because #1 the NCKA name is thrown around and #2 the time lost in court can not be taken back.

I say not a requirement but will bitch at someone till they feel 1 inch tall for being unsafe.... Case in point the pinhead I seen out in the Pacific Ocean at PC wearing gym shorts a wind breaker no signal device of any kind and had his PFD inside the bow hatch, after my rant he was off the water in about 30 minutes. If I fish with guys I don't require they know how to or prove self rescue and will gladly help them reboard if they need help because I know how to safely get someone on board , but I will refuse to fish with them if they ever go out alone not being capable to do it. I can self rescue and I still never go out in the big blue alone. And I carry all the right gear.

What we need is a list of kayaks that are the easiest to self rescue on. BUT, they gotta be kayaks that are no longer in production ;)  :smt044

Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.
