Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Van Damme 11/21,22
« on: November 24, 2014, 02:19:24 PM »
Looks like we were a couple of days early for the epic conditions. Conditions were far from epic on Friday/Saturday. Swell was up with breakers at the beach during high tide. Was divable at low tide with surprisingly good visibility. Once you were out of the mud and pea soup it opened up to about 15' near the reef. I am always surprised by the size and quantity of abalone inside the reef. We dove the southwest corner near the archrock. Very little kelp, great visibility and 9" abs everywhere. It is interesting to me how abs of a certain size tend to flock together. I was so excited with the unexpected conditions on my first dive I took one just over 8. I caught myself, slowed down and then grabbed a couple 9 1/4s. I had a friend come up for the day and he went home happy in the rain gifted a limit of abalone. Saturday the conditions were similar but visibility dropped off a bit. You needed to hunt around for clear water in the pea soup. We dove much closer to the rocks so there was quite a bit of surge. No fish that weren't locked down in the surge but still a considerable amount of large abalone. The best part of the trip is always parking the trailer on the south end of the lot and camping with an ocean view and a giant fire. We had the lot to ourselves overnight both nights albeit in the rain Friday. Might try and go up again early Friday if conditions hold.

For Sale / Thule Goal Post rack
« on: October 10, 2014, 09:29:04 AM »
Gone, Gone,Gone Sunday Morning. I have a Thule Goal Post rack that I no longer use and it is taking up space in the shed. I only came across it as I cleaned up the earthquake mess. I can't find the tightening/locking mechanism for the hitch but they can be found online. Otherwise it is as new. Best part is the price. If you will come pick it up in Napa, an NCKA'er can have it for free :beer2 . I will contact by PM in order.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Annual (kinda) Van Damme trip
« on: September 08, 2014, 09:28:56 AM »
Putting this out there early. The Napa boys are planning a beachfront camping trip at Van Damme the weekend of October 24. We will arrive about nooon on Friday and scope out a place to camp in the parking lot. In late Ocotrber we have had tremendous weather and ocean conditions over the years that has resulted in PB abalone and speared fish. Any NCKA'ers that want to join up for a day, the weekend or just a beer are more than welcome :fishing1 :yak  :beer1

Ocean Kayaks / Lowrance fishfinder install on T-15
« on: March 09, 2014, 07:03:35 PM »
As I mentioned in another post, the Lowrance Scupper Transducer mount did not fit well in the transducer well of my new T-15. I wanted to use my Mark 4 with GPS so I began to modify. I started by modifying the Scupper mount. I figured I would start with the cheapest part, right?
I cut off the mounting bracket and filed it flat;

Then I used scissors and cut the hard rubber disc to fit flat on the transducer:

Then the scary part. I cut the mounting arm off the transducer and filed back as far as I felt comfortable: i found a sharp blade did the best job job shaping the hard plastic

I gooped the hard bracket and disc to the transducer and let it set level overnight.

The transducer now sits fully within the well.
Rest of the install went by the book. I like the look of the hobie thru-hull.

I used rivets and a bit of goop for the mounting bracket.

And the finder folds down flat to allow the shield to close with FF in place

Ocean Kayaks / New T-15 owner
« on: February 08, 2014, 04:13:56 PM »
Made the upgrade. I sold my older SOT's and bought a T-15 from Adventure sports. Really happy with the deal and the accessories. I will be rigging soon as the rain stops. Does any one on the forum know if a lowrance scupper transducer holder fits in the well? Looks like it should. I am planning on moving my Mark 4 FF.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / 11/26/10 last dive of the season
« on: November 28, 2010, 12:16:21 PM »
Took advantage of the calm before the storm to paddle south out of Stillwater Cove. Was able to cut inside all the wash rocks (first time ever) and make a now short paddle down the coast to the third house. Explored spots that I had never seen diveable before. Four of us all got at least one 10" in our limits. Spent an hour or so after the ab diving just exploring and enjoying the perfect day on the coast.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Stillwater, 11/18,19
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:28:29 AM »
Camped and dove out of Stillwater on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Got a late start on Tuesday. Water was pretty much flat. A small, 2-3' glassy swell from the NW.
Paddled south from Stillwater to domed birdsh*t rock and dove in 15' FOW just below the second house ( 5 big windows) south of the park. Visibility was about 10-12' and it was a little surgey. Big abalone everywhere but clamped down tight in the surge. Got a nice limit of 9's. Unfortunately I lost a fin and never found it. Kind of fun dolphin kicking down with 1 fin, spinning in circles. Fog moved in tight late evening and closed everything down. Sent my abs home with a friend that is unable to dive. He was grateful for the feast.
Wednesday, I think the ocean was even flatter, and vis opened up to over 15'. Not a ripple until about 11:00, then a little wind chatter on top but that was it. Moved a little further south than Tuesday and found lots of fish to spear and more big abs. DiverDoug got a near 10. All were again over 9.

We will be camping at Stillwater sites 11-12 Friday and Saturday nights. Looking to get out and fish but the ocean and weather look like it is not going to cooperate. We will be there come rain, shine or big swells. Though big swells might keep us in camp drinking beer. Stop on by if you are in the area. I'd like to meet some of you guys and pick your brains.
Andy
