Title: Big Baits for Big Lingcod!!
Post by: fungunnin on January 11, 2011, 12:35:31 PM
In my quest for the best Lingcod plastics I have tried to gather some of the largest offerings out there and will be testing them out against each other this year.

This batch of pictures was just comparing single and double tails.

Which have you guys used? How many can you pick out by shape?
Any that I missed that you all use?

The two red tails are for size comparison. They are standard 4" and 6" tails. The lead head is a 8oz.

So what is the brand and size of each?

#1 _________ #2 _____________#1 ____________ #2 __________ #3 _________ #4

I got one of my biggest lings last year on a 7" white bass worm with silver sparkles on a 1 oz jig head. Was using it for the blacks an next thing I know old lingy picked it up

I think Cali lings are best attracted to moderate sized soft body lures. I like the looks of the two smallest single tails, and the smaller twin tail. Mostly I'm fishing with 2-4 ounce heads, and so i use the bodies that seem tbe best balanced on those.
I do use the giant-getters once in a while, but usually charter trips where we're fishing 150'+. Even then I only use the huge lures because of the leadhead weight, and I prefer to use iron when fishing that deep anyway.
All of my big lings were caught on either 7" scampis or similar sized swimbaits.

There can be only one ... #3 single tail ... Kalin's BigN.

You're bringing this selection up to Alaska in August, right?

Those items do work, but I agree with the other guys that smaller stuff works too.  What I found was that smaller fish hit the smaller stuff too, so truly targeting the big lings, giant cabs, and lunker rockfish that aren't afraid of anything is best done with big ugly lures and baits.

I scored some of these Panther Martin's at a sale table years ago and they hammered some huge fish...

You're biased! :smt044
Yeah, for AK the bigger the better. I used 10-12oz heads with both huge twin tail and the giant kalins single tail my one time out AK hali fishing. We had hunks of salmon added on as incentive.
Here in Cali I'm usually only fishing 40-100FOW so I'm using the more moderate sizes.

Nice one Allen. How come Kalin is not a member of NWKA. And He is too young to vote.

I agree with Adam in that the smaller twin tail is great.
I also have had good luck on white diamond jigs. jim

Allen's kid already has a tackle company......jeez.

I sometimes use this giant trout swimbait.  It's about ten to twelve inches.  It kills big lings cause it looks like a fat blue.  It doesn't work too well when there's a drift because it hangs up a lot. But in still water, big lings can't resist it.  Also anything that look like a good sized octopus works good.

Great discussion. I've been wondering the same thing. In the past I've used a wide variety of different baits, but haven't caught enough to find a pattern.

I use these, tied to enough weight to get them down, and wait. They will all float! Just pick up the bigger ones!

(these are cast boosters for blasting small diameter holes using anfo) I think the color, is really irrelevant!  :smt044

So while there's not too many accounts to go from yet, so far we can guess that color doesn't have too much to do with it. But I think we can see a trend in shape that somewhere in the range of 5"-7" long and rather skinny seems to be working for bigger lings. AK? That seems to be another story.

7 inch halloween. By hammer. The pig verms love em too. Wait, the cabs too. Shit, the big coppers. I was at Seward a couple of years ago and saw some lings brought in that made me cry. The lures they were using were like 10 or12 inch split tail in white. We couldnt get on a boat. The silver derby had just started and not one charter had room for days. One of these days Im going back. Seward is one of the most beautiful towns I know of.

Kinda like this bugger? This is a setup taken from AK that's pretty well used the Strait of Juan De Fuca that's essentially used for halibut but picks up plenty of jumbo lings as well. It's got a king size hoochie backwards up top w/ a 14/0 circle. Fishermen who use this a lot stuff scent and bait in the hoochie and secure it w/ stretchy thread.
