FreshKATs Event Rules For All:

In conjunction with the Championship event Freshkats will host an Open Tourney.

All FreshKATs Tourney of Champions and King of the Port Open Rules:

• Each King of the Port angler must fill out their own points sheet accurately and submit at the check-in table no later than 1:00pm.

• Each Tourney of Champions angler must fill out their own points sheet accurately and submit at the check-in table no later than 2:00pm.

FreshKATs Event Rules for All:

• No live or cut bait allowed. Scents OK. Kayaks under human power only, NO MOTORS.

• Catch & Release your best five(5) fish per person(chosen by the angler) as scored based on the scoring system below.

• The total points of your best 5 fish as presented on camera will be your score. The photographs resolution MUST be high enough so we can zoom in and clearly view your wrist band ID#, fish species and size of the fish down to the quarter inch. Check your cameras resolution prior and adjust accordingly.

• The entire fish must be photographed laying straight on a measuring board with either the fishes dorsal fin point up and the top or bottom jaw touching the boards end (0” mark). We will NOT measure your fish nor will ANY fish be allowed at the check-in table.

• All photo entries must be rounded down to the nearest quarter inch. Don’t risk a disqualification if it’s too close to call.

• All fish scoring photos must include the tourney wrist band with your name clearly showing.

• We will verify all angler fish photos at the check-in table and compared against your score sheet. Please have your pictures and measuring board ready for view. You MUST also be wearing your wrist band.

• All CA DFW rules must be followed. All species must be legal length according to CA DFW. Example - Striped Bass must be at least 18".

• You will be required to wear a PFD or life jacket while competing.

Individual wristbands will be available at the check-in table near the launch area one hour prior to start time. The tournament is a shotgun start at 6:30am. All anglers must stay within 50 yards of the ramp with headlamps on prior to start.

Not following any of these rules will result in instant and complete disqualification. All ties and discrepancies will be decided by the tournament director. Know these rules before competing!

There is a competition for the most trash picked up by weight during each tournament, the prize for this will be announced during awards. Trash collected will be brought to the check-in table for inspection and further dumping instructions.

I know I speak for ricci and Mike and myself and my girlfriend and henry when I say this series is going to be awesome! We are going to have so much fun and everybody's going to really get a chance to find some fun fish and experience some great locations.

to put minds at rest we've been discussing the format and rules for this event for the last two and a half months. And we feel that this is the best way to really bring everybody of all skill levels in to this event to have a great time so whether you're a "fresh on the kayak noob" or you've been doing it for 15 years you are going to have so much fun.

Ricci, Mike and I have been working on a lot of fun stuff for this.  So come on out and join us, get some great prizes, build some great memories and have a great time at all of these events.

we are working with some great sponsors and more will come on board as the series builds.

I know I can't wait to see everybody there, and you know I will be at all five events. So this means that some of you will see me 10 or 12 times this year! But don't let that stop you from coming ;-)

Looks like a great series. Where is the camping for the Tahoe event? Do you have a link? If we register and can not make one of the events, can an angler still be a part of the Championship Event?

Victor, the Camping at Tahoe will solely be wherever you choose to stay. The closes Camping to the Launch site( Tallac) would be Camp Richardson.About a quarter mile down the rd from the launch site, and where i assume where most be staying.

I believe if you just signup for one event , your good to go to the Championship Event

For those camping with dogs the best option is Fallen Leaf Lake Campground across the road. Camp Richardson says not dog friendly on website.

WOW! You guys did a really good job setting up this series. I can tell there was a lot of forethought and insight (along with your own time & money) went into the planning process. Just the logos alone are siiick! Proud of ya'll for doing this.
I've added these events to the Tourney List.

If we register and can not make one of the events, can an angler still be a part of the Championship Event?
I believe you are eligible to compete in the Championship if you register for all 4 events (even if you miss one).

• To participate in the Championship event you must either place in the top 3 at one of the four events or register for all four events (attendance not mandatory).
• The Championship Event is absolutely FREE, a no cost event to participate.

So I had a thought about shirts.  How about do a shirt with all the dates and locations listed on the back and the main FreshKATS logo on the front, kind of like a concert shirt.  But then do different colors for each event to mix it up.

Just a thought.

Scott,

Yes, that is kind of our thought, but only 1 color. Main shirt, all events, sponsors, long sleeve, quick-drying, ultra-wicking fabric with UPF 50, freshkats down the arms. Working on a shirt sponsor now. We hope we can have them a few months before the championship. Stay tuned...

California Canoe and Kayak just jumped on board with some serious cool prizes! Thanks Jeff and Keith!

If you have not registered for Berryessa yet, now is the time!

Also, if you want to be guaranteed fish the Championship event at the Port in December, I would register for the Series now!

As of March 19th @ noon we will remove the option to register for the Series.

Only those who have registered in time and who have placed top 3 will be invited to fish this event. The championship event is also FREE for those who qualify. The prize categories for the Championship will be amazing and the biggest we've ever done. Elite chirp units, paddles, PFD's, Scotty gear, Dobyn rods, baits, lures, nets, grippers, pro cure.... on and on!

(http://www.whitemountaingraphics.com/freshkats/images/register_button.png) (http://bransonbaits.myshopify.com/products/2015-freshkats-series)

The prize odds for the Top3's and the Series per-registers are looking really good right now! Remember all proceeds go to PIF!

We've received a few full Series and Berry registrations last night n today. I'm headed to to Vegas for the Whiskey fest (hiccup) so I'll add the names to the list on Sunday.

Bring your waiver, registration.

Ok, Berry was a great event and next we have Rollins Lake Round-Up on April 18th, just 3 weeks away. This should be another  awesome event with our main sponsor Hobie. We are giving away a brand new 2015 Hobie Quest plus a whole bunch of other great prizes.

We will also have Hobie Demo Day! So if you've been thinking about getting into a new Hobie come on out, we'll have 2015 Revo's including the 16, PA 14's, 12's, Outbacks, Tandems, etc. Sales and Specials on site. Don't miss the festivities!

We also added some really great sponsors to the list: Headwaters kayaks, Insight Genesis, American Legacy Fishing, FeelFree Kayaks. Yup it's going to be another great event with lots of great food, prizes and a little green for 3 skilled anglers. Will it be you?

Don't wait register NOW and get it in the books! Me, Jim and Ricci look forward to seeing you at Rollins.

Yup, brand spankin' new boat going home with some lucky Rollins angler.
I've added the waiver and the new points form to the registration download for each event, on page 1. This way you can have all forms ready in the AM.

I was thinking about my camp site for Clear Lake. I read this on the web site

"Kelsey Creek: Reservations available Apr 1 - Sep 30; 1st1st when not on reservations."

So if I'm reading this right, the camp sites for the tournament will be 1st come 1st serve only. No reservations.

On the scoring sheet, it has Macks listed as 9pts/inch, but on the first page of the forum it has them at 6/inch.  I'm guessing that's just a typo on the scoring sheet and it should be 6?

for the 5 fish limit on Tahoe, are we going to follow the DFG limit of 2 macks or can there be more than 2 macks since its C&R?

Ben

all dfg rules apply. Always have. But that's a good question ben. To make it fair across the board and to prevent peeps from possibly breaking the law, The limit and maximum take and Macs allowed to be entered or submitted will be two. But 5 fish total only. I will have the cliches fixed by the end of the week. Thanks

Better than that, they will be able to compete... we will be hosting an open event for anyone who didn't qualify for the TOC. All details will be available after the Clear Lake event.

Overall, It's going to be a huge event... Full demo day, tons of prizes, vendor sales, BBQ and lots of good times!

Yeah, it's been interesting listen to the bait guys whine and cry. No bait will result in the best top 3 angler$$, period. Skill, technique, dedication, homework and the ability to read and adjust on the "fly"  :smt002 will get it done. For the "bait" guys, step up your game. I don't use bait to catch fish at the Port or really anywhere else and I've never had a problem catching fish!

EDIT - Need to set things right here. Ricci called me out and I DID use minnows at the Berry event  :smt012. Most of my fish were not on minnows but I still feel bad I mis-spoke. Sorry, please let me rephrase. I hardly ever use minnows.  I like to use artificials and usually don't have a problem catching fish, most of the time but not always, sometimes, but not every time but I wish I caught more. Sorry guys and thank you Ricci for calling me out and setting me straight. I hope this make it all better.   :smt003

Remember guys, this is a free event for the TOC anglers, so have fun. I feel strongly that each of the top three anglers from each qualifying event should have no problem catching fish without minnows or bait. I also believe that these anglers are beyond lucky and are skilled fisherman. Go get em guys!

Correct. Anything that is alive or was alive is not allowed. Dough baits, power bait(s), scents, gels all OK.
Use common sense. If you need to dissect or push the limit of this rule you probably shouldn't be using it.

I was speaking for the anglers who went into this from the very beginning knowing the rules and abiding by them to be only confused by another last Minute Change. So I apologize for the sudden Change. Regardless,  it should be a great showdown. I think 5 stripers or a limit of bass and crappie will take it.

I was speaking for the anglers who went into this from the very beginning knowing the rules and abiding by them to be only confused by another last Minute Change. So I apologize for the sudden Change. Regardless,  it should be a great showdown. I think 5 stripers or a limit of bass and crappie will take it.

Why not 6:30????? just saying!

Right? Another head scratcher. But the Shotgun is For Real!  :smt044 Complimentary  from our very own Montana!  :smt005
Wait a darn minute ... you mean to tell me that a shotgun is the biggest bang Montana can deliver?  I somehow doubt that! :smt002  Bring out the big stuff!!!! :smt003
a mini cannon would be awesome but the cops might show up!!!  :smt118

Chris, You can only submit two stripers. Sounds like you're putting a plan together :smt003. Good luck brother!

Do you have to sign up with FreshKats and pay the entry fee to compete in the open event?

Yes, if you want to compete on the King of the Port Open event. You can sign up through freshkats.com or show up the morning of the event. If you want to just show up and fish, demo and enjoy the raffle, no need to register. Hope to see you there!

Mike

I think you can only have 2 stripers.

Chris, let me rephrase this. You can only retain 2 stripers legally but you can CP&R as many as you wish. So when I said
Quote
You can only have 2 stripers
, I meant in possession. You can put 5 on your score card if you would like.

Hope this clarifies things.

Is there a potluck/awards ceremony plan? It was so cold last year we ended up at a pizza joint.

Sacramento area weather

Sparkling blue sunny skies on Sunday will help warm up temperatures into the mid-50s with a high of 54 degrees forecast. Monday’s high is expected to be 52, with 56 forecast for Tuesday. Temperatures will peak at 59 degrees on Wednesday.

“Then, things will really change,” Wilson said. “We’ll see a (storm) system coming through Thursday. It probably will bring us wind and most definitely rain. It’s a real storm.”

If I can catch a salmon on the fly, you all can catch one without bait. Look where the fly is, right in the mouth. Was striping for stripers and bass when this beast slammed my fly and took me for a ride. I'm guessing 30+ inches and at least 15-20 pound. Landed in about 5-10 minutes. Never took me to the reel, hand stripped it in.

My first salmon!!!  Game on boys!

Nice fish and thanks for joining me Scott, it was fun.

I was really looking forward to fishing the port. For me, I've only fished it maybe a handful of times so it's still a mystery. I know the fish are there I just really wanted to figure them out and pull a decent bag. So met Scott in the parking lot and Got on the water about 730 ish. The water was calm and fish were jumping, birds working, lots going on. Right off the bat, BAM 1st salmon on... 10 seconds later, fish off.. ahhhh. 30 seconds later BAM fish on! Hell yeah big-un! Got it to the boat and I realized I pulled a noob move and brought my small net. Ahhhh... I could barely get the fishes head in the net. The lure got caught in the netting, fish twisted, line broke, fish hung with me for a few moments and off he went on his way. I got to keep my lure and a memory of a big buck, 35"+. Oh well, keep movin'.

After that I started looking for some crappie but I was hooking lots of small LMB and SMB. I then switched it up and fish a bit deeper, figured out the pattern and started pulling some good legal fish, lots and lots. Water started to move so I went looking for some strippers, found some and a few nice legal fish. Next, crappie, looked high, looked low... yup there they are, 4 but all small.

Overall it was a good fishing day. I landed 9 stripers, 15 LMB, 3 SMB and 4 crappie. I had to stop cause I ran out of minnows....  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 yeah right, all artificials, you don't need fu%&'n minnows to catch fish at the port!

So guys the fish are there. I don't think my limit score of 555 points was anything special but I know you guy will pull some toads. Good luck and see yall on Saturday morning!

All dfg rules apply. So, if anglers fishes C&R only, you CAN submit 5 legal sized stripers. Know and understand the dfg rules and regs, it could be in your benefit.

FYI - We also understand that these Stripers can be cookie cutters so needed we will have a laptop to look at photo time stamps so there is no confusion on multiple Picts of the same fish but entered as a different fish on the score sheet. My suggestion is clean up your photos prior to check-in and only have the number of fish you plan to enter ready for view.

You need to make a Lockford sausage gel scent!  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 I'm not kidding!

The port can be tough no doubt. I really had to fish my ass off to figure out the patterns. Try to think about what all the fish are eating right now. Match the hatch as best as you can. Use your fish finder to find active eating fish, possibly on bait or busting bait on top. Do you know what that looks like on your finder. It's no "fluke", these fish eat wounded baitfish imitations.  :smt004

Try to figure out how the tides effect a fishes position to shore as the water rises and drops. What food would they find there. Points, grass and structure transitions can all act as ambush points. But try not to get your bait caught in the rubble cause you'll have to "jerk" it out. Bait size also REALLY matters, work on a "small" quick limit and then swing for the fences.  Or you could just hang out on shore n let your "hair" blow in the wind, maybe do a little "jig".  :smt003

Good luck and remember, tough days help us to be better anglers in the long run.

If you've never been here, the launch ramp is really small. Please get all your stuff ready before you head down the hill. Or try to get there early and setup your rods OTW. Remember to stay within 50 yards of the launch ramp with headlamps on.

Well I put together all the prizes and we've got some great stuff. Looks like about 4K in cash and prizes. Sweet!

Please Channel 69 VHF for all communications.

The weather for tomorrow: 57 degrees, 2 - 4mph out of the east and mostly cloudy/partly sunny... fish on!!!

Day of registration ends at 9am.

Ok that's about it. See you guys in the early AM.

Mike

Having never been to the Port of Sacramento can somebody just confirm that fm the access for this event is off Jefferson Blvd at S River Rd?

That's what the internet tells me, but I just want to make sure!

First I want to say thank you to Mike, Jim, & Ricci for putting together an awesome FreshKATS Serries for all of us. This Serries was no easy task to make  happen and this team did an awesome job. Thank you three for making it happen.

Next thank you to all the sponsors your continued support of our events and kayak angling as a whole is much appreciated. Please see all the sponsors on the 1st page and patronize them as they do a lot to make these events a little more special.

So Amy and I arrived this morning and Amy wasn't going to fish the open. After talking with Jim, Mike, & a couple other odd fellows she paid and was in the open tourney.

So I had fished the day before targeting bass and stripers with minimal success. With the way the pre-fish went I had decided to focus upon mud salmon. The plan was to go out and put 5 on the hog trough and go for the win. Well plans are all good but I didn't plan on the seal swimming through the area I was going to fish causing all the salmon to scatter like roaches when the lights come on.

We fished the area and were hooking and landing Shad like crazy. Then I see Amy land what I thought was a Red Ear Perch. I tell her to throw it on the trough to get points. About 10 minutes later a light went off and I realized what had happened. I quietly tie on a grub and slide into the area Amy was fishing drop down and BOOM Crappie on. I had Amy switch over and we hammered Crappie and Perch all day.

When all was said and done I know I caught more than 50 Crappie. It was an amazing day on the port. Both Amy and I were able to hammer Crappie all day and pull off a sweep. Amy 1st Place in the Open and me 1st Place in the Tournament of Champions.

For me the prize wasn't nearly as sweet as doing as well as I did against what I feel are some amazing anglers. I feel seriously lucky against the likes of RacinRob, FishWorks (Ricci), Weimarian (Ron), Naoaki, & ScottV. These guys are amazing anglers.

Amy still can't believe she was able to pull off the win in only her second tourney. I can't be more proud of her!!!

After the Tourney we had to go out and celebrate. HELL YEAH!!!

It was nice meeting all you guys this weekend.  BTW, the food alone was worth the skunk I put out.  Big shout out to whoever made the smoked fish and the sausage and the wings.... I could go on with this.  Can't wait until the next one!  Thank you to the people who put this on.  I thought there was going to be a fold out table and a couple of propane grills, you guys went all out with the canopy and the setups and the displays.  Good stuff!

All hail the king and queen of the port. Tournament fishing at it's best. You can't win the tournament of champions just with luck. You have to know what you're doing. Which explains my score.  :smt044 Congratulations. Well done.
