It started out slow, but SteveS and I got into the schoolies again.  Steve caught well over 20 fish to 21 inches.  I caught nearly the same number with the biggest going 25 inches.

We launched at 6:30 from Bayfront and headed under the San Rafael Bridge to San Quentin.  Jim (jwruck1) launched us and started trolling by the Marin Rod & Gun Club pier while Steve and I head under the San Rafael bridge toward the prison flats.

Steve scored a small schoolie near the bridge, but the action really didn't pick up until we got to the west end for the prison near the ferry.  We started marking lots of fish, but they weren't hitting the XRaps as usual.  So when Steve noticed that the jumping baitfish were smaller than our lures, I suggested that we switch over to something smaller -- 3/8oz white hair raisers.  That did the trick.  All of sudden, Steve started nailing fish on every pass.

The hot spot was along the channel right behind Outback Adventure's new paddle shop in Larkspur.  Thanks to SteveS for discovering it... and letting me mooch one of his small hair raisers!

Here's picture of the one I decide to keep for a neighbor...

It turned out to be gorgeous day on the water.  We were even treated to the pleasant sight of a hot women's crew team in training :smt118 (Sorry, guys... I should have got a closer shot :smt086 )...

Hey Chuck,

Very nice day!  I did not have the success you guys did, but managed a decent day with about a half dozen for a few hours.  I marked lots of fish out on the pilings so focused on that hard thinking it would be good. However, it was not until I made it under the bridge, past the primary prison area that I  had my first fish - along the shoreline adjacent to the channel markers.

I figured you guys had headed the way you did and contemplated the paddle further up, but then thought you may have headed over to Paradise and beyond, which was longer than I wanted to paddle in the short time I had.

Saw some other kayakers enjoying the morning as well.

I wrapped up the short outing on the troll home with a major heavy-weight bruiser that took me into the barnacles of the pilings - and well you can imagine the rest.  Argh! would have been a very nice fish.

Glad you and Steve had tight lines. October in CA.

Tight lines,
Jim

Those other kayakers where bsteves and I.  bsteves got one small schoolie and juvenile western gull (species list).  I was totally skunked on a purple X-Rap. :smt013   Chuck we looked for you but didn't see you.  The weather was great :smt001.  We will have to give it another shot.

It was a good day, slow start, but we cracked the code.
One lesson learned from me- don't stick to one method for too long.  trade it out, and you might get 'em faster.

Chuck pratically made me put on a tiny little hairraiser, but i returned the favor by browbeating him into taking my other one-- after his repeated switches didn't bring results

Good story, especially with the match-the-hatch aspect!

ChuckE, stripers have too much mercury for you? Do you ever eat them?

I may eat one or two from the bay per year, but not any more than that.

Why do you think I'm giving that mercury laden bay striper to my pesky neighbor?  :smt077 .... just kidding, of course  :smt040

I have less concern about eating stripers that come from cleaner waters like Lake Mendo or the Oneil Forebay... especially if they're just smaller stripers.

InSeine/BSteves -

I apologize I did not introduce myself   :smt006 - will do so the next time I find myself out with you.

Sorry you did not have more success. The trusty X-rap caught the fish I mentioned.  At the Brickyard the weekend before last, SteveS showed me that sometimes one shoreline vs another a 1/2 mile away can make a difference (after I tallied up a goose egg).

Hope I got all my Steve's in order.   :smt017

Jim, I was hoping to see you and Brian too.  SteveS and I paddled around to the other side of the prison just past the ferry terminal.  That area is totally protected from wind.
