That constant scrutiny made me a better rod builder. Please post some close ups

Look away if need be, tis not for the faint of heart :)

These were mostly packing and burnishing issues......except for the stupid pait marker, i shoulda just closed the wrap up and covered it all.

I wrapped the split grip and butt first and then moved on to the guides. Then i ran out of thread with about four guides left and had to reorder more.  While waiting, the rod was moved around a bunch and the handling lead to thread movenent and gaps.

Of course the really big screw ups all wound up getting cut off and tossed in the trash.  I had the rod pop out of the lathe chuck and the size a metallic underwrap popped in the middle of the wrap lol, had to redo.  Had another wrap i forgot to put color preserver on, color was horrible after epoxy, cut off and redo.  Had another wrap i started and it was just too busy, didnt match the guide wraps, cut it off.

Lessons learned though, rod build 3 is almost done and it its a ton better.  Eliminated alot if mistakes i made on these.  Will post pics shortly.

Hell yeah.  Those look great!

Must be an awesome feeling to catch a fish on a rod you built.  Now go do it on a kayak!   :smt044

For future reference,
Always order extra thread, like with paint, different lots can vary in color. Sometimes it may not be enough to matter, but especially with color preserver, it could look like a totally different color.
Looks like you are off to a great start, and they get much better as you practice.

Nice work Art.  It gets easier, like you said it’s all about the packing and keeping the seams straight.   If you run out of something, and don’t want to wait for a delivery, let me know.  I have lots of supplies.

Let's go fishin', and don't look back, cuz you'll never see a hearse with a kayak rack!

Appreciate that Jim.

This is my pops' sabre 196, virgin blank thats been bumping around several garages for decades.

This is the mex flag wrap I had to cut and redo multiple times.

Nothing fly's higher.

I finished the swimbait rod with a plug I cut on my lathe.  Probably not gonna see a whole lot of custom one off stuff like that from too many builders.

Prepare....it gets addicting real quick lol.  I got a drop shot rod and a surface iron rod getting gripped up this weekend so I have something to work on during the week.

And, by all means, throw some pics of rods you built or stuff you're working on.

Love the custom butt cap.
Here’s my latest build. Rodgeeks xc733 spiral wrapped. Going to put some bend in it at GS12.

Fantastic work Jim!!!  The split grip tiger is unreal but the butt wrap really pops.  I really like the color options for madeira, is there any special tricks to using it?  Opinions online seem to indicate they have a silicone coating (or some type of lubricant) to help it pass through embroidery needles.  Suggestions seem to be that its fine so long as you use a color preserver, to others saying to just stay away from it (and all other sewing threads) all together.....clearly you got it down lol.
