Sooner or later Abalone are going to be on the endangered species list because of A#$holes like this. Seriously what a Joke 700 in a year ....I'd like 5 minutes in the water with these guys and their cement shoes.

"The case will be prosecuted by the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office, as the abalone was all harvested in Sonoma and Mendocino."

I hope the Sonoma Co. legal system knows the importance of the resource and nails them to the wall!!!!  I'd expect minimal punishment in major cities due to ignorance but they gotta be aware of the abalone's value up there.

this is a small bust compared to other ones before it but every little counts i guess.

i hope they got to eat some at home since they probably dont serve abalone in jail.

 :smt005 :smt005

its just a matter of time before red abalone is opened up for commercial harvesting on the north coast. with each passing year we are getting closer and closer to it. my feelings only. in the end, money talks.

i think they should allow for harvest of red abalone as long as its done between the depths of 1000 fow and 1010 fow and they have to be within 5 miles of the farallones.

Guys,
You should catch the dialogue over on the spearboard forum about this.....my goodness.
Its gone off the deep end and turned racial.
Such a shame....as scumbags come in all nationalities, shades and persuasions.

As a sideline to this whole bust, just think what a waste it is to have wardens give tickets for improperly punched tags that are pretty much ridiculously hard to punch and jerks that wait on beaches to measure if you are within 500 feet of your ab tag and also make sure you punch and fill it out with cold hands and pens that don't write on waxy surfaces.

That's because Fish and Games doesn't have the budget to hire real wardens and gets all these frustrated want to be cop types that flunk the cop test. On top of that they waste money in their budget and can't account for it. Not to mention the bureau is run by some political appointee. In the meantime the real money is the poachers running up and down the coast in expensive boats and cars that they will never catch without a tip because poachers don't go through road blocks on popular weekends. Oh, and did don't forget the road blocks are illegal because despite the fact that Fish and Games has a law that says a licensed fishermen is subject to a search it is against basic rights we have in the constitution that they hope they never get tested on in court.

When I first heard of this one, I thought it was a joke. It becomes illegal not to have a pencil...in the boat/kayak soon after the catch!
Ya gotta wonder how they came to see this fastidious pencil pushing as a tool in the war against poaching.

Shhh....don't tell em!
Poor officers. Like many employees in inept bureaucracies, they hope they are doing serious work and must ignore their own best instincts and what they know is often penny wise and pound foolish.

If a commercial level poacher ever got caught in prime time main road inspection on a weekend... his friends would ride him mercilessly.
