I just bought some hip waders

Luis

Did you get hip or chest waders?. I couldn't use hip waders for anything in a kayak. I use Gortex chest waders a lot. I have had to swim and reboard many times over the years. Not to mention getting dumped in the surf my fair share. First, it is not hard to swim with Gortex waders. They are thin and light and easy to move in. I also believe that when done correctly waders can be safely used in many open ocean conditions. As explained above, a good paddle jacket layered over the belted waders and topped off with your vest is a very tight seal. With all my swims the wettest I got was damp about a couple inches over the wader top. People should really try this method in a safe location. I agree, it may not always be the safest. However, it's a lot safer than people who havn't tried it will lead you to believe. You can still choose to wear insulating paddle wear under it all if you fear hypothermia. The best part is you are toasty dry and comfortable even in the worst and wettest conditions. I have NEVER been cold in waders, ever. That is valuable.

We have discussed this topic before.....

IMO: for $100.00, you can get a 3M farmer john that will surely save your life when you get separated from your kayak or if your kayak develops a bad leak ....especially when your in the ocean - far from help (Bean Hollow,Limeklin,Elk) Even if you have a VHF, the coast guard or any boat in the area cannot get to you in a drop of a dime. And even if you are paddling with a buddy, trying to get up on his or her single kayak may not be possible (big swells or really bad wind chop) Bottom line: Staying warm is key.

IF you want to stay dry while wearing a FJ, I recommend getting some cheap seam sealed rain pants and cut 'em into shorts (I cut mine to the knees) and wear it over your FJ and your lower half will stay dry.

Like some of the others, I'll use the hip waders in smaller lakes or fishing close to shore in the Bay. But the Bay can be just as dangerous as the Ocean - so know when to call it a day and paddle back to safety - closer to shore or simply call it a day.

Is fish worth dying for? That's what I keep telling myself....especially when I feel that I'm pushing my limits as a kayaker  :smt045

1.Dress for immersion
2. Buddy up

Just my 2 cents....
