Yeah, caltrans likes to do big jobs like that on holidays to F everyone up while they get triple overtime.  Last thanksgiving they had I5 down to 1 lane on a bridge up north that caused a 3 hour delay.  Whatever bastard in caltrans thought that shutting down a major highway on the biggest travel weekend of the year was a good idea aught to be shot.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Have no idea if it's true or not, but a spokesman for Caltrans said that traffic is actually lighter over Labor Day week-end than during the week or even a regular week-end.

It makes sense since you don't have all of the people going to or from work and you don't have the whole school drop-off brigade out on the streets. Traffic up here in Santa Rosa was actually very light compared to a regular weekday.

I find that hard to believe :smt002

I wish there was some way to widen the 101 at the Santa Rosa area. That commute needs some serious work  :smt011
