Tote:

While the fishing was a little slow last time, the trip was incredible...which is why we decided to go again, just longer.  I'll dig up the thread.

A short list of what jigs and equipment we'll need would be nice.  Do we need mackeral sabikis or will the boat have plenty of bait?  What color irons are best for YT?  Are there any other special lures that are outside the norcal arsenal?

The boat will be plugged with bait, but they will be sardines.  Making greenies is a productive option.

Quite possibly anchovies too. Sardines have been in shorter supply this season. If you want to seriously target the 'tails, it would be wise to bring a few sabikis along.

I'll post up a thorough list of suggested gear in a bit.

Sounds great; I'll make those dates work!

I'll put a check in the mail tomorrow. I'm assuming that my spot is held since my name appears on your list...call me if that is not the case. Thanks for doing the organizing!

Blue and White and scrambled egg are the common YT colors to start with. I like the Tadys and Fish trap brands. If you are using butterfly jigs, the green mac and pink and silver work well. Paul can probably tell you what the hot patterns are. Some people use different irons for surface vs yo-yo. For YFT I use the chrome and blue tadys.

There aught to be threshers about, should we drag CD18 rapalas between the kelp patties?  Can we chum up makos and blues in the evening once everyone's out of the water?

The main goal of this trip is to go after tuna, yellowtail, and white seabass, and the crew will opearte the boat to maximize our opportunity for those catches. Threshers may or may not be around; if they are, they'll smack the same live mackerel trolled for yelllowtail. If you are carrying a CD18, you can tie one on at that point.

If anyone does hook into a thresher (unlikely but possible), it is critical to give them plenty of space. Anyone fighting a thresher from a kayak must leave a lot of line out until the fish is absolutely exhausted. Unless you are an experienced kayak thresher catcher, you definitely want to call the big boat for support long before it is time to land it.

I doubt we will chum sharks to the boat on this trip, although as long as we aren't running people are welcome to fish live bait or lures from the boat at night.

Will we be allowed to hoop net lobsters?  That could be productive at night too...  I don't think traps are legal for rec take.

That could be a lot of fun and super productive and tasty. I've had it in mind since Shane (Islander skipper) mentioned diving for bugs. I have several hoop nets myself and access to plenty more.

A vessel is allowed up to 10. Also keep in mind the Islander has a Zodiac - just the thing for setting and retreiving hoop nets, the only legal recreational take of lobsters other than by hand.

Again, it is something I have to ask about along with the SCUBA refills. I appreciate your patience - these guys are running back to back trips right now and very hard to reach.
