The trip is a go! We are poised to experience an epic kayak fishing adventure. Picture fighting tuna, matching up with yellowtail, maybe connecting with a white seabass, dragging bait for big halibut - and of course there's always world-class calico fishing to fall back on.

The trip loads and departs at 10 pm Sat Nov 10. We'll fish almost 3 full days: Sun Nov 11, Mon Nov 12, and Tues Nov 13 until 4 pm. We'll return to the dock around 9 pm on Tues Nov 13.

That's a lot of fishing and relaxing time for $685. All meals are included, and they know how to cook on that boat. They'll keep our motors running. Drinks are extra, plus you're welcome to bring your own.

There's no better boat for the mission. All of you who fished the Unfinished Business trip know what a fantastic operation it is. The amenities are great: custom kayak rack, huge swim step for easy on / off, large live bait capacity, Zodiac chase boat for bait and beer delivery, comfortable staterooms, hot showers, and a sun deck for kicking back, and more.

We're going at the best time of the year for a shot at the offshore Cortez Bank. It's 110 miles out in the middle of nowhere. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll have the legs to fish any number of the Channel Islands including some that are fished even less than magnificent San Clemente. We can also fish off the boat at night or if it gets too windy.

Everyone on the trip will want a 20 to 30-lb rig with a smooth drag system. Inexpensive reels for the job include the Shimano TLD-15 lever drag (at $110, a terrific deal for trolling live bait), a Daiwa SeaLine 30 XV-SHA (around $100), an Okuma Catalina (around $100), or even a Penn 500 / Jigmaster ($60). The ideal setup is a bait rig, a high-speed iron rig, and a lighter weapon for bass, barracuda, bonito, and the like. I may have a handful of loaner rigs available - contact me via PM if you have trouble getting your own gear.

There's room for 18 fun-loving and adventurous souls - not including Sean and I, who wouldn't miss this for the world.

Please send your $200 deposit (checks made out to Paul Lebowitz) to:

Paul Lebowitz
9630 Capricorn Way
San Diego, CA 92126

Please plan on paying the $485 balance by Nov 1.

I'm pretty sure I'm in too.  WAF is a go.

Is anyone carpooling?  I recently did some serious work on my van's engine and I'm not comfortable trusting it on such a long, important trip.

I am sad. WAF account-brimming. Bank account-not.
Sounds like a fantastic trip, have some yellowtail sashimi for me.

Quote from Rock Hopper on July 18, 2007, 07:47:21 PM: Islander or new kayak? Islander or new kayak? Islander or new kayak? Islander or new kayak? Islander or new kayak?

Response from Big J: New kayak = $800 (give or take); Islander = Priceless. What an opportunity! Go for it, Dustin!

OK, folks, I just reread my advice to Rock Hopper and decided to take it myself! I'm in for the Islander trip and hope to find a carpool to share expenses (Frank? Scott? Dan? anyone else in East Bay?). My check is in the mail, PAL.

Ok, I'm 100% too now.

What is the max number of people that could go?  I might get someone else onboard  in the next few weeks - when is last call?  - nevermind I found that above.  Looks like it's filling up quick...

Paul -

I'll send you the check on Friday. I also have extra 25-30# rigs (Calstar, Avet, Newell) if people need gear. BTW are lobster traps allowed or only diving?

Thanks! Scott

The check is signed the envelope is sealed and stamped and I am just waiting for the mailman to pick it up.

Scott, I look forward to discussing if my gear is appropriate for this.  I trust your opinion and it could be a good excuse to buy more stuff but new Kayak is sounding really attractive.
