OK, I'll step up and be the first to say that I didn't tell my family about the shark attack at BH when I got home.  In fact, I played softball on Sunday and didn't mention it there either because one of my team mates has a wife that would give the "www" serious competition.  My theory was that I would get too much grief if they knew I was swimming with GWS everytime I fished BH.

It wasn't until Monday when I saw all the posts about the reporters snooping around for phone numbers that I figured that I'd better fess up.  Well the wife saw it on the 6:00 PM news Monday.  When I came home at 7:00 PM from work to make an announcement she was NOT happy.  Oh yeah, I was in the dog house and my WAF points took a BIG DUMP.

I'm not able to go fishing for the next 3 weeks anyway so hopefully this blows over by that time.  So fellow yakkers for those of us that have to answer to the families please don't get attacked by a GWS OK?  LOL

So Gary, if your wife only found out about the previous fun at Bean, from all the guys who came to your funeral, how would that have played? :smt007

Well, if on a future fishing trip it was me instead of Dan's yak that was chewed up and she didn't know about the first GWS attack, she would know that it was my choice to keep her from worrying about me everytime I left for a fishing trip.  She would also know that I went out doing something that I loved and that makes it worth the risk.  To tell you the truth I always felt more vulnerable when I used to SCUBA dive and splatter fish guts.

On another tangent I don't tell my wife about all my close calls with all the Indy 500 wanna-bes on the freeway or stories of my street racing days in LA...some stones are better left unturned.

I'll confess...I had to go straight home and tell my wife (how could I sit on a tale like that?) because I knew she would appreciate it. Although she wasn't stoked on my being out on the water with Whitey she has gotten more mileage from the story than me!

I didn't tell my wife for about a day or two. I could have almost gotten away with not telling her at all as we don't have TV and don't get a newspaper delivered.  However we both work at a marine lab, so I figured someone would probably mention it eventually and I thought it best if I break the news first.  I tempered the news by explaining that the incident occurred very near Ano Nuevo and I that I'd never be that reckless.  I haven't been fishing since the incident, but I think that's more a function of the weather and other family commitments.  I'm still have the green light for Elk so it can't be that bad.

Both my sisters found out..... The eldest made a funny comment about that fact that "not even a shark can keep my brother from fishing from his kayak :smt003"

I told her as soon as I got back from the Bean that day.  I keep very few secrets from my wife.  She already knows I'm crazy and rarely listen to her anyways.

What did I spell "reckless" wrong?  I also don't run around in lightning storms with a metal pole.

No, I just read it to mean that you weren't as reckless as the 17 guys that were at Bean :smt002

I'm not married so don't have to worry about a wife.  Liz is almost with me when I go out so I had to tell her about it so she can make a decision for herself as to whether or not she wants to take the risk.

My brother and brother in law saw it on the news then jumped on the site to see more pics.  While they were reading through the thread they seen my posts and somehow put 2 and 2 together (I think they ended up with 6 but they somehow figured out it was me) and told my mom.  Luckily the 4 years of my being in the Marine Corps prepped her for some of the not so smart stuff I do.

HECK NO I didn't tell the wife!!! I haven't even got my kayak yet. I couldn't spill the beans and kill the whole ocean/kayak fishing thing before it even got started. She worries about me enough when I go into the ocean. I don't need her having nightmares about it before I ever get in the water.

On a good note, I just got my pfd in the mail today and will be ordering my marine radio soon. Gotta get the safety equipment before the kayak or I might be tempted to do something dumb  :smt011

BTW, my wife was satisfied with my explanation that it was the Hobie fins that made Dan's Hobie look like a piece of diem sum.  I showed her the Hobie video and she said "no wonder".  Craig (CafeCraig), no offense to you but I did say that you got buzzed and circled last year at BH but didn't warrant a "taste".

As far as Brian being "reckless" he wasn't fishing right off the shore from Ano Nuevo during elephant seal breeding season.  Unlike the rest of us (you know who you are) who kept fishing BH through late Oct and knew that the landlord wasn't going to tolerate us much longer.

Lastly...face it, we all have to be a little crazy, looking for some adventure, living on the edge, making fishing more sporting...whatever.  That's what makes us brothers under the skin and we understand one another.  However, I don't think others see it that way and I did try to keep my family from having to worry too much about me but I got busted.  Oh well...
