Thanks PAL for the information. In fact it may have been the guadalupe islands that this particular fishing show was being filmed, if I recall correctly. Looking forward to date confirmation.

Guadalupe is not typical...it is shark central.  People go there to see them.  No where in CA has the density of that spot.  Guadalupe has put fear into the fearless.

For sure about Guadalupe. Fished there 4 times and saw many GWS's everytime and loss fish to them. Cortez on the other hand is much safer than HMB or BH. No seals out there to hold big sharks. I may never fish BH but I will fish Cortez and San Clemente any day. If anyone wants to buddy up on the water  that works for me, I don't talk much on the water like others in our group, but like company.

Ok guys and gals, we're just about nailed down on dates. Pending one callback, we're looking at:

Depart at night Sat Nov 10
Sat Nov 11 - Fish all day!
Sun Nov 12 - Fish all day!
Mon Nov 13 - Fish until 4 pm
Return 9 pm Tues night

The target is the offshore Cortez Bank for yellowtail, white seabass, and a chance for a kayak yellowfin or bluefin tuna. Free divers - this is the good stuff. Also, lobster season will be in full swing.

Fall is the prime weather window for this spot, but with three days to fish we'll enjoy a lot of flexibility. If we need to reposition, we'll run at night while we rest up. Our final day will likely be spent at San Clemente Island.

We're set! More info to follow soon.

Edit: Moved the trip back one day

Does the boat have the ability to re-fill scuba tanks?  It'd be sweet to get in a couple lobster dives per day too - or even just take photos.  I haven't done lobster before so don't know how effective I'd be on them freediving.  I understand they're a little quicker than abalone.  ;)

Don't know if they will on this trip or not. I'll check for you - could take a while.

Many of the Islander crew are expert free divers. If you get the opportunity to get tips or even go with them you'll learn a lot.

Will anyone else be diving either with or without tanks?  I'll do both if possible, though I lack a blue-water gun.  I could probably get a few dumb ones with my sawed off magnum...   I'd gain WAF on the trip if I came home with 100lb of hamachi and a dozen lobsters.  If it's only hamachi I'd break even.  ;)
