Why not hit the kelp beds in the Shell Beach area? It's where I got my first taste of saltwater kayak fishing... It's been a dozen years since I left SLO, so I don't remember the street names any more. But there's an easy access launch right in Shell. An alternative would be to launch at Port San Luis and make your way south to the Pirates Cove area, south of Avila Beach proper. Maybe 1.5 mi ?. Talk to the folks at Central Coast Kayaks, in Shell. They ought to be happy to give you the launch beta.

Regards,
Scott

I know they are out there,  If you go to central coast kayaks, the easy access launch Scott is talking about is down the street from them they are on the main frontage road shell beach rd.  go down the side street that they are on the corner of and their are a set of stairs right down to a beach launch,  you'll see it is a pretty easy launch, swells are easy to time.  unfortunately right now the kelp in shell beach is not very thick at all very scattered at best. you'll be able to check it out yourself as you come down the 101. if you are going to the dunes,I could be wrong, but I think there are only surf launches accessible along the coast where the dunes are. It can be a fairly long surf zone. I do know that the water off the dunes has a lot of good sized perch. port san luis is a good place to launch, pretty much no swell or break at all.  you can also launch right off of avila beach, south of the avila pier and cut a good distance off the paddle to the pirates cove area. just some suggestions.
