Shimano TR-200G question
« on: March 06, 2007, 02:33:25 pm »
I just got a Shimano TR-200G reel and I'm having trouble putting it into free spool. I flip the switch and it won't release without some weight on the line. When I have about 6 ounces line goes out fine but any lighter and it'll just hang there. Is there something I need to adjust? Any other TR-200G owners out there who know what this could be?

Thanks!!

Z,This may be stating the obvious but...did you try turning the spool tension knob on the side of the reel to free up the spool tension a bit?

I was going to suggest the same thing.  If that's not the problem then I would return it.

That is a very good reel. When I first bought mine when the dinos were still roaming the land, at that time, it was classified as a downrigger reel. But I used it for many years as my "Go To" reel for salmon, sturgeon, rockfish, halibut...very smooth drag.

By the way... I have a TR-200G that's better than new for sale for $50.  I'm calling it better than new since I just had it professionally tuned and upgraded with Carbontex drags with Alan Tani's help.  The drag is smoother than butter and I only used it twice.

I'm selling it because I won the Okuma Catalina a few weeks ago. :smt003

If anyone wants it, PM me or reply here.

Chuck, I wish I'd known!  I just bought a new one yesterday.  If I hadn't spooled it up, I'd take it back!

they're pretty decent reels.  the spools have bushings, not bearings.  for kayaks, that good.  there is a handle bearing that is bad, but it can be packed in grease.  the handle itself is small.  can't help that.  the level wind assembly is decent.  the drags need to be changed out.

z, i'm home all of thursday during the day and most of friday, just have errands to run in the late afternoon.  i'm in saratoga.  got time to swing by the house.  we can take a look at it.  alan

Yeah I did give it a try and it works but only wth a lot of weight on the line. Still kinda funny.

Hmmm  Sounds like a job for Alan.He can fix it and I would definitely upgrade the drags, but if the reel is new you might want to exchange it first as this is not normal.

I also have a TR200G that I'd be willing to part with.  I'll put a post in the classifieds section.

They are good reels, but I've mostly gone to the smaller 100 version because there is really no need for the wider spool and line capacity.  The TR100 has plenty of capacity.  I also have a new Okuma from AOTY so I can safely part with a couple reels.

By the way, I came across another message board that mentioned that a handle from a Calcutta 400 fits on the TR200G providing a longer handle.
