I'm finding these posts to be alienating and concensus destroying rather then concensus building.

<added edit> I wanted to note that I realize that I'm personally guilty of being divisive. Note the terms I used in the title and the question. I'd change these now, but feel that doing so would be less than truthful.

Is anyone finding that their viewpoints are changing?

Is any new, germain information being introduced. Information that is verifiable and undisputed (I did find one tidbit regarding the Pikeminnow)?

Are we better off with these types of posts, or without?  If with, do they belong in the Politics forum, or in some new forum ?

As stated, I have my opinion, but wonder about the rest of you'se.

Regards,
Scott

Some of us (guilty!) just like spouting off.  I don't take anyone's opinion as devisive, just an opinion.  I like sharing opinions (obviously).

This is a community, and in all communities there will be differing view points.  It is fun and interesting, to me, to talk about them.

The worst thing that could happen in a community is the following conversation.

Person 1: This is the way it is.
Person 2: Yup.
Person 1: Yup.

End of conversation.  Boring isn't it?

I enjoy the discussion even if I laugh at some of the posts.  It keeps things interesting when we can not fish.

No doubt. This weekend I was hoping to get a day in either at the community lake, or up at Rollins for trout. No such luck...

Sigh,
Scott

I'd say send it to the politics section but it seems like any thread can burst into a "Man is Bad Go Kill Yourself," thread pretty quickly.
I just wanna kill my piece of the Earth and any other planets we inhabit in the next 50 years in peace.  I will no longer participate in such threads.

I think discussion is key to progress and opposign viewpoints need to be aired.
man's evolution is no longer about jsut his genes--it now also includes his thoughts, convictions ,ideology as it affects his actions.

Quashing dissent and debate with the goal of promoting harmony is like restricting a genepool to identical genomes: it leads to inbreeding, an inability to adapt, inviable mutation, and extinction. The founders of the nation understood this very well and had vigorous debates regarding the most controversial subject (freedom, individual versus state versus federal rights, church and state, etc.). Why have we lost that willingness in modern times? And why we do we shrink from examing our convictions and beliefs in light of ideas proposed by others? It is the fuel that burns with the requisite intensity to ensure democracy thrives and autocracy fails. Why are we so afraid to examine our beliefs and defend them rationally with logci and soudn argument? Are we afraid they might be revealed to be mere whim? I wonder.

What about conservationists?  I consider that vastly different than enviromentalists or preservationists.

BTW, Northern Pikeminnow ARE native to many west coast streams so that's not verifiable or undisputed.   :smt012

I like reading the discussion, most of the time.  As long as there is no name calling, I'm cool with other oppinions, especialy when there is fact to back them up.
Personally, I'm a conservationist, I like to use the resources I need and leave some for the next guy.

BTW-how long untill mankind does like lemmings?   :smt002

My thoughts exactly, until about my third google. Look for  "Eel river squawfish introduction".

thornley, I am surprised by your 'can't we just get along' attitude.

I've always found you argumentative, contrarian, and downright cantankerous. at least online,  :smt004

hence, I decided you must be trolling for an argument and voted the troll option.

Best regards,

J

Yes, but keep looking around and you'll see that they are native in other CA rivers.  I too saw some articles on into to Eel.

I like these kinds of discussions so long as they remain civil.  Sometimes I even learn stuff.

It's interesting that so far 13% of respondents have indicated they've changed their point of view one way or the other.

I checked the "Thornley = troll" box too.

So are you one of those 13% or have you always thought Thornley was a troll?  :smt016
