Had the whole beach to myself just about. Way windy conditions, had lots of good practice working lines in strong wind. Set up an anchor in the lee of the point where I would fish or cast a snare for nada, then make a trap run, had two ring traps in 45 feet, no fish hits but got 2 big dungie and 2 big reds for some crab and corn chowder.
Spectacular wipe-out on the landing, sand in my ears, yak ending upside down, but lost nothing due to lashing it all. I learned my leason on that. Too bad no one saw it. Ben

hey Ben,

you live off the fruit of the ocean.  I gotta check out this Muir beach one of these days.  it's in your neck of the woods.  Listen, have you heard or seen salmons going up river in the creek that cut through Muir Woods SP?  Some years ago I witnessed some BIG salmons going up river there and I'd like to take my son Mackie to see it.  There are usually making loud splashing noises since the water in the creek there is very shallow...

You must be a great cook making crab/corn chowder and fish tacos.  We should trade recipe ideas.  I can only cook though using recipe books...

Thanks for the report.   :smt001 :smt001 :smt001

I think that they are steelhead- at least that's what i've always seen in there. Check under the bridge- there's a deep hole there that they usually sit in. There are fish in the creek by Samuel P Taylor now as well (at least there were a few last weekend).

Both Coho and Steelhead are in there.  Probably needs to be some more rain.  Last year or the year before we saw fish up and down the creek through Muir Woods near the end of  December.  You can actually see them doing their thing in the gravel beds.  Very cool sight.

The creek that runs through Muir Woods is called Redwood Creek.  It has mostly coho salmon and steelhead.  There might be a few chinook that spawn there, but most years there aren't.  It is still a little early for the coho to come in, but there could be a couple in there right now.  Wait for the creek to clear after the next big rain (at least 2 inches) and you should see them.  Steelhead don't come in there until after the new year.  That creel is managed by the National Park Service.  I think they have their information on their website.

Thanks for the info guys!  These are all helpful.  Yeah, I remember it was raining for several days straight when we went there a few years back but the creek was still shallow.  The salmons were all bruised up from the rocks.  They swam hard upriver against the current and all you hear was a lot of water splashing and rocks banging so we checked it out…  And we witnessed the sacrifices these salmons had to go through.

It will be cool for a 10-year-old kid to see these so he too will feel that life is full of sacrifices…  It is perhaps one of the greatest event to see that is meaningful and unforgettable.

I have never actually seen salmon go up a stream to spawn (only in the Discovery Channel) but I would love to see it sometime. I totally agree with what you said. This why I think Salmon are "The Best"  - not just for eating and catching but their way of life :smt007 TRULY AMAZING  :smt023 I mean...come on....they try to dodge fishermen when they're at sea.....then they have to deal with the sea lions that wait for 'em at the mouth of the river that their trying to swim up to....and in inches of water - that make them even more vulnerable to other wild life (including poachers) and then the few that make it, have to fight over a woman to have sex....and when all is said and done = they die  :smt118 What a life  :smt090

So.... next time you catch a salmon, kiss it before you bleed it  :smt002 They totally deserve to be treated like royalty....even just for a second or two  :smt002

Well stated Mooch!

I had the pleasure of watching salmon spawn up Stamp Falls on Vancouver Island in BC one summer after graduating high school.  It was truly spectacular watching them jump out of the water and up the falls.  More recently when the flooding was happending in Oregon this year there was footage on the news of salmon spawing across a flooded street with just a few inches of water on it.

How groovey is that  :smt035

I'd like to see one soon - so if any of you see 'em - somewhere local - let me know, I'd really appreciate it.  :smt002

Theres a place called Roy's pools, on sr francis drake in woodacre, at san geronimo golf course, you can watch big coho go up the falls and swim around, way cool. They come up from tamales bay.
And if your in the Sac hood, go to the nimbus hatchery at hazel ave and rt 50, we were there last weekend and saw hundreds of big salmon and 20 lb steelies jump all the time, sometimes 4 or 5 fish in the air at once. Its the highest spot on the American they can get to. You can get 5 feet right on top of them, kids really dig it. So do the cooler adults!
As far as the cooking goes, Im allright, but Anita is the master! I just catch and clean.

:smt005 Don't forget they die after they mate.   I think the steelhead is King they face all of the same perils of salmon but survive and do it all over a couple of times.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I don't remember where exactly it was and I hope I'm not completely wrong but a few years ago I was up towards tahoe, probably not all the way up there, and came across a place where DFG had put up a trail where people could walk close to the stream and see the salmon spawn.  They had volunteers out there explaining what was going on and a booth or two near the stream with information about the fish.  There was also a small "viewing room" somewhat under ground that had a window into the stream where you could see the fish swimming by.  Pretty cool, I've been trying to remember where exactly it was so that I could take my son up there to see it.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about please chime in with some info.

I think its Taylor Creek on the way to Emerald Bay just past Pope Beach. They have an under water viewing station.
