Any info regarding rules (if there are any), licensing (if there is such a thing) or other pertinent info regarding fishing in Mexico. Might be going with some friends to San Felipe. They're going for an off-road adventure, but I might tag along for some fishing.

Of course there are rules! I've never been checked, but the penalties for non-compliance are steep (forfeiture of gear including your yak).

Strictly speaking, you need a Mexican fishing license and a boat license (yes, a yak is a boat in Mex).

The Red Tape
Kayak anglers traveling to Baja should carry a number of official documents and permits, including the current state registration for your car or truck. For overland border crossings throughout 2007, carry either a passport or a certified birth certificate along with a picture ID for each person. U.S. auto insurance is not valid in Mexico. Purchase coverage online or at one of the many brokerages found near the border. From Mexico, you’ll need a boat license for each kayak that will have fishing gear aboard, and a fishing license for each person who will be onboard a fishing kayak. Mexican boat and fishing licenses are widely available at Southern California tackle stores, or directly from the San Diego office of the Mexican Department of Fisheries (619-233-4324, 8 am to 2 pm M-F).

Thanks Paul.

You wouldn't happen to also know anything about the fishing in the San Felipe area would you?

You also need to know that it is fun...even when the fishing sucks.

My trip to Colonet w/ Chef and PAL was one of my funnest trips ever, and the weather and fishing SUCKED...but the scenerey and comradarie were unmatched.  BTW-I have learned that ALL camping is better when traveling with a Chef, plus it WILL make you the envy of all other camps.

Sorry, never made it to Felipe. I hear the tide swing there is something incredible. If you don't time it right, you might have to slog hundreds of yards.

Like Sean said, it's gonna be fun. Salud!
