Just another day at pescadero:
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Josh - nice variety there! Pescadero might just be the place to go on the opener. I launched there once whith Lee and Ethan (we caught a lot of fish but only a few keepers = it was a calm day - so it was easy getting back to shore. I can't imagime it on a big day :smt010

cabby from Big Sur

That looks like a toad sculpin to me, not a cab...

I'm not sure what a "Toad sculpin" is.  Neither Fishbase nor the American Society of Fisheries recognizes that common name.  A quick search on google only led to some unhappy fishing reports from San Diego so I'm guessing it's a local name down there.  However, that fish from Big Sur is a Cabezon... you can even seen the cirrus on the nose  ( a key characteristic).

Toad being the generic fish term for large.

Sculpin, being the california scorpion fish.

And it may or may not be one, but it sure looks like a sculpin.

BTW, are cabezon spines as gnarly poisonous as sculpins are?

Okay, that makes sense.. I can see where they might look similar.

Anyway, cabezon spines (as far as I know) aren't poisinous but the roe (eggs) are.

Cabbies vary in color dramatically from grey/black to blue to red to brown.

I believe it's a bit of posturing, that is to say, looking impressive to prevent you from attacking/eating it (didn't work did it).  Other sculpins like staghorns and buffalo sculpin have large operculum spines that they stick out.  In the case of cabezons they also seem to flare their gill covers while producing a nice croaking/grinding sound with their pharyngeal teeth (see link below).  I've never had one spit at me though.
