Hey guys,

I just wanted to share some bad news I heard today. Eric Sores, passed away from a heart related problem. He had a ski accident in Tahoe and while being examined they found a tear in his heart. They flew him down to Stanford and examined him. While there his heart ruptured. Friends say he went quickly. I'm sure there is more to the story, but I will let those closest to him tell it.

Eric was a pioneer and a legend to many of us on the west coast. He brought rough water ocean paddling to the main stream. He was a true waterman, he dove, he fished, and he paddled huge water. He always did it in his Tsunami Sit on Top. He has always been an inspiration to me. If you have not read it yet, check out his book "Confessions of a Wave Warrior", It will make you want to do more than you thought you could in a kayak. He will continue to inspire us and his legacy will live on with those of us who follow in his foot steps. RIP Eric, you will be missed.

Here is a link to Erics last blog post. His friends tell more of the story in the comment section.

Dan - you haven't been here too long compared to others who are as involved, and I'm really impressed with your energy and communication.  I'm sorry to hear this news, but I'm glad to have you here sharing your passion with us.

One of my friends posted this old interview with Eric where he talked about his heart issues. It also has some fun paddling in it.

That was an amazing video, and this issue is hitting home with me big time.  Thank you so much for sharing this.  The conversation between Eric and Kenny was extremely special and will resonate for many here as it did for me.  Your post is one part of what is a special legacy for Eric Soares.

Live life.  Appreciate each other.   :thumright:

Those guys are just bad ass crazy Dan. Makes one want to throw caution to the wind huh? I was reading up on his passing and I hope it was fast and painless. I saw they thought he was OK again and he just wasnt. It looks like he lived life to the fullest. The way to be. Want to paddle with you soon Dan. C.

I was very sad to hear this news. From the moment I first caught wind of what Eric and the Rangers had done up and down a forbidding, marvelous coast, I was transfixed and motivated. It gave me the confidence to get my 'yak out at Big Sur and other isolated locales, even if it was just to drop a line, not dare crazy salty whitewater.

Oh man! I just got into his blog about a year ago. I've really been enjoying it. Really one of the most into it, envelope pushing paddlers we've ever had on the west coast.

RIP Mr Soares.

Dan, thanks for the post.
